The Name Is Faine

I’m hearing all kinds of news, from all kinds of sources…

Most importantly, I ‘m starting to think the Chiefs will actually sign former New Orleans Saints center Jeff Faine (wiki) sometime this weekend. Faine is the best center on the market and was a Pro Bowl alternate last year. He is only 26, and is a former first-round pick. This could be a huge, huge signing. The move would also keep Brian Waters at guard, which is key. No guarantees here, but only two other teams are looking at him (St. Louis and Tampa Bay) and he won’t be re-signed by the Saints. Expect us to pony up some cash if we do sign him, though. Hopefully, he won’t escape K.C. without plenty of Gates and a new contract. (hat tip: Scout)

Some receiver news: D.J. Hackett and Larry Fitzgerald might wear a shade of red next season, but it won’t be our shade. Fitz is close to striking a deal with the Cardinals, while Hackett is expected to be heavily courted by the Redskins and Titans.

            BallHype: hype it up!

I think Jeff Faine is a step in the right direction and a good first move in the FA. This must mean that Wiegmann Is done in KC. Keeping Waters at LG is clutch. He was the only upside to our horrific line last year. But like I said Faine is a good step in the right direction. Who’s next? Stallworth, Florence, Hall? I just can’t wait to see us next year. It’s going to be really exciting to see the 08 Chiefs.

  2. 2. Jeremy Says:

Ditto, Faine would be an upgrade, and "fits the mold"  I hate to keep saying that, but Herm says it over and over.   Young, Big and physical….  That is what are team is going to look like.

  3. 3. Jeremy Says:

Do we bring this guy in for a look?  If we do not draft a kicker, I say yes.  He used to be one of the best.  Thoughts? Saints | Team releases MareWed, 27 Feb 2008 15:41:40 -0800Pete Prisco, of CBSSports.com, reports the New Orleans Saints released PK Olindo Mare Wednesday, Feb. 27, because he failed a physical.

  4. 4. Jason Says:

Faine would be a very nice pickup.  I feel like I’m playing Madden right now and just simulated to the Free Agency period.  I hope we sign Faine, draft Jake Long and Brandon Albert or Carl Nicks.  The Chiefs line would be pretty damn good for years to come.  Olindo Mare can go elsewhere.

  5. 5. bannyc9 Says:

Faine? YES YES YES.  He is a good, young center with a nasty streak.  It would be a nice pick up.

  6. 6. Cornelius Says:

    A million times yes. Waters+Faine+Drafted Lineman(hopefully Long, I’m praying)+2 bodies=The Chiefs have a line.

  7. 7. Daniel Shirley Says:

I would have to say no to O. Mare.  I watched him early in the season and he was no more accurate than anything we’ve had pass through in the last year.  Distance was questionable as well.

  8. 8. Dave Says:

I have to be honest – I haven’t been talking Faine because the Saints have been saying from the begining that they would resign him……now that they won’t I am freakin out a little……he is a stud and I would welcome him as aChief with open arms…….the new problem though is Tampa Bay has positioned themselves at the front of the line….they want him bad……Jake Long, Waters, Faine, McIntosh, Starks, and sprinkle in a whole lot of Owen Schmidt and you have the Protection and Blocking solved with 8 draft picks remaining and possibly one more FA signing left…..sounds like a good start to me

  9. 9. ROC27 Says:

LT: Jake Long (hopefully) LG: Brian Waters C: Jeff Faine RG: D. Mac RT: Max Starks…. Thats the O-Line we need.

  10. 10. ROC27 Says:

When I think of ‘Pure Domination’… That line is what Im thinking. . . Geeze.

  11. 11. ROC27 Says:

Off topic ( I Know, But I cant help it…) Arrowhead Pride posted (from WPI)Nick Athan’s article called ” Why Not McFadde?” . . . check it out… It REALLY makes you think. Plus, McFadden being as young as he is, can easily take over for LJ when he’s done… I say we take him if Jake, Dorsey, or (MAYBE) Ellis is off the board. Forget trading down. Get the best player available.

  12. 12. ROC27 Says:

ESPECIALLY if we make the right calls in Free Agency ( Faine, Starks, a good #2 WR, and my boy D.Hall.) Then we wont be hurting the team using our #1 pick on another (future feature) RB.

  13. 13. Dave Says:

What’s up ROC – man am I ready for the offseason to begin……I can’t believe how happy I am that I found a real Chiefs board…..It’s good to talk to the real fans with real opinions…..Adam – you and the other guys do a real good job……any new news for the day?

  14. 14. ROC27 Says:

Dave! Dude, I was thinking the SAME THING RIGHT NOW !!! I sometimes look at the other teams blog sites to see what jive theyre talking, and they barely comment on their posts… unlike AA, where WE comment like theres no tomorrow, swirl around rumors, Dig out news and go crazy on everything Chiefs. Thank You Arrowhead Addict for giving us a voice.

  15. 15. ROC27 Says:

And by the way. . . Run DMC is a big part of what this franchise needs; a future starting RB, a Kick & Punt Returner, a ticket seller, and hey, if Brodie ranks, he may even be a better QB, ya’diigg??! Hahaha! . . . kidding. But the guy CAN score through the air.

  16. 16. Dave Says:

Roc – as far as the DMAC article I read it and it is good….however if presented the situation I would rather trade down and get more "top picks" than to crowd the Chiefs backfield…..the one thing the article doesn’t take into consideration is how unhappy/pissed Larry Johnson would be……Trading with Dallas – yes…..trading with another team and passing on Dmac and only getting 1 first round pick this year…..then I would say no thanks – lets keep Dmac……best scenario is and always will be Long, Long, Long…..

  17. 17. ROC27 Says:

Oh. Dont get it twisted, Dave. Im ALL for Jake… and after that, Im all for Dorsey. And Maybe even Ellis (if Dorsey is gone)… but if all 3 are gone, then I dont know. I would be inclined to going with DMC. NOT to take LJ’s spot. but to be our Mo. Jones-Drew to our Fred Taylor. KR and PR and split back situations to give Brodie more options…

  18. 18. ROC27 Says:

And LJ’s my boy! He’s my favorite player who’s EVER worn the red & gold… ( Hence ‘ROC27′)… BUT if LJ wants the best chance to win, then he shouldnt get disgruntled if we were to pickup DMC… if anything he should be happy. Cause again, he’s not losing his spot. The Only person who can remove him from being the starter is himself (with his play.)

  19. 19. Dave Says:

I got you Roc – I know that you want the others first…and you are right – there is a real chance that DMAC is there at 5 staring us in the face…..and yes I know that you are talking about having them split time/be on the field at the same time……while I like the sound of it – what I am saying is I think LJ would be pissed if we drafted DMAC….as long as he would be OK with it then it would work great……if not then you are paying two people alot of money to not get along…….the Priest Holmes/LJ thing did work out but it was pretty scary for awhile…….everyone was thinking LJ was a bust……overall and bottom line is we are in a good situation no matter what in the 5 spot aslong as we draft the Best Player and don’t reach for a need…..

  20. 20. Jeremy Says:

Anyone thing we would be reaching by selecting a CB with our first pick if Jake Long is gone?  The #5 pick is really tough this year.

  21. 21. ROC27 Says:

Dave, then we get EACHOTHER. Cause I hear what youre saying as well… if DMC is sitting there ALONE, I think we take him… but it may be a good idea for Herm, Clark, and Carl to have a chat w/ LJ to see how he’d feel about that possibility, considering that he is the franchise player… afterall, he had some pull in bringing in Tamba Hali, telling Herm “Trust me coach, this kid is great. We Should draft him.” … I wouldnt be too pissed if we got Dallas’ 2 1st round picks to get Otah And DRC.

  22. 22. Dave Says:

No value for CB at the 5 spot – sorry, I can’t think of and CB in the last few drafts that were worth the #5…….if you don’t like who is there at 5 and you want a CB then you had better be trading down….and not just once but twice

  23. 23. Dave Says:

Roc – I have never understood why Managment wont talk to the players that are the leaders on the team before the draft….well, as long as they don’t spill the beans on who is being looked at…..Roc, what are your thoughts on Doresy slipping…..I think that if he falls to us our Doctors had better know why and if we should have the buyer beware….I personally think he would be a stud, but he won’t fall far unless it is a medical problem….thoughts?

  24. 24. ROC27 Says:

Oh. Hell no. I WOULDNT take a CB at 5 either. No matter how much I like Rogers-Cromartie… The Same reason why I wouldnt take Clady at 5… not worth the pick or the money… So, its Long, Dorsey, Ellis, Dallas 2 picks, or Run DMC (in that exact order.)

  25. 25. Double D Says:

Jeremy – I think it depends on whether we acquire a starting tackle through free agency, but don’t get a FA CB. The only one really worth consideration is McKelvin but I feel he would be a reach at #5. In any event, I think the Chiefs could do better with either Ellis, Dorsey, Ryan, or DMC and then select the best combo CB/KR available in the 2nd round – Reggie Smith maybe?

  26. 26. Double D Says:

I would also take Clady before reaching for a CB.

  27. 27. ROC27 Says:

Dorsey’s injury sounds like a plague… and may seem to make Glenn into a bust… BUT I think if he stays off of the foot, goes to therapy with OUR team doctors and gives it time to heal, He May be ready by Training Camp. My Opinion ofcourse.

  28. 28. Donovan Says:

I’m trying to think of teams that are in great need or some need for a franchise running back: Seattle, Arizona, and possibly Cleveland. How’s about this for a trade with Cleveland? Our 1st and 2nd round pick for Brady Quinn and their 1st round pick?

  29. 29. Dave Says:

Roc – you crack me up….."not only no – but hell no"……..I love the attitude!…….Jeremy I feel your pain – we need a corner…yes, but…..you can get a good one in the second round…you can get a pro bowler in the 2nd by trading for D Hall….or you can trade down in the first and fill two needs…."just say no to a CB at the 5 spot"

  30. 30. ROC27 Says:

Guys. . . Either way our 5 spot is great for us. Cause its a Win, Win, Win situation… We’ll either end up with Long (priortiy) And have a nasty O-line. . . WIN… End Up with Dorsey or Ellis and have a destructive D-line. . . WIN… Or End up with DMC and have an insane running game. . . WIN!

  31. 31. Donovan Says:

Scratch that last post. That was stupid.

  32. 32. ROC27 Says:

And Adding 1 More ‘WIN’ in there . . . trading down with Dallas and killing 2 birds with 1 stone. by taking Otah And DRC . . . That Should Be your push Jeremy.

  33. 33. Dave Says:

Your Good Donovan – just throwing out ideas…..and yours is "for sure" out……hahaha

  34. 34. Dave Says:

Rumor has is that Herm has 8 open starting positions that need to be filled from the FA and draft (5 coming from the first 5 rounds in this years draft) just hearing about it from an interview Herm gave this morning with Rhonda Moss – is it true, and what else was said – anyone?

  35. 35. Dave Says:

    Let me take a guess – the 8 spots are…..1 -Kicker, 2 -kick returner, 3 -OT, 4 -Guard, 5 -Center, 6 -Wide Reciever, 7 -Cornerback, 8 -Fullback

  36. 36. Jeremy Says:

After all I am reading in the news, I think it will be damn near impossible to trade out of the #5 spot.  Trading out of the #5 spot would be the best scenario for us, and that is a sad testament to the NFL draft.  Unfortunately, I think we will be reaching when we pick at number five whatever position we take.  Dorsey sounded good before all this stress fracture talk.  This draft is going to be nuts, I have never been so hyped/condfused as to a draft before.  [By the way when we selected Larry johnson years ago I was pissed, because I felt we needed Boss Bailey (LB Detroit)........just an example of how lucky we all are that I am not drafting.....lol..... ] Again at this point I would be thrilled if we could just trade out of #5, even if we don’t get full value for it!!!!  GO CHIEFS and GO ARROWHEADADDICT!!!

  37. 37. Pete Says:

Just a quick comment, I knew Faine from his days at ND. The guy is a monster. He was then and has for sure lived up to his college hype, especially in the last couple seasons. Also one of the legit nicest guys I’ve met. I’ll be really pleased if this one pans out.

  38. 38. Donovan Says:

How do you guys feel about this as an ideal draft?1. Jake Long2. Branden Albert3. Brad Cottam4. Justin King5a. Dexter Jackson5b. Terrance Wheatly6a. Jerome Felton6b. Dennis Dixon7a. Kevin O’Connell7b. Nate Longest

  39. 39. ian Says:

I think Dixon may go undrafted becasue that injury is pretty bad but i would take a risk on him in the 7th as for Justin King there is no way he lasts to the 5th round  but yeah i like where you are going with it my ideal draft………1st Jake Long         2nd Brandon Albert or a Wr like Early Doucet     3rd Brandon Flowers or Justin King     4th Owen Schmitt      5th Dejuan Tribble     5b Rb Chauncey Washington.   6th and 7th best players available

  40. 40. Donovan Says:

Dixon is a good thing to think about because he could be that X-Factor that we’ve been craving. I also belief Chan Gailey will want to go after him because he is very similar to Kordell Stewart who he developed into being a game changing performer.

  41. 41. ilamuku Says:

If we could land Jake Long and Brandon Albert, I’d go crazy.  I sure hope it happens.  Also, Brandon Flowers is no slouch.

  42. 42. Double D Says:

Here’s how I currently have my mock set up: 1) Jake Long OT, 2) Reggie Smith CB/KR/PR, 3) Donnie Avery WR/KR, 4) Owen Schmitt FB, 5) Pick 1 Drew Radovich OG, Pick 2 Dennis Dixon QB/WR (I’m assuming he’ll be healthy enough), 6) Pick 1 Cory Boyd RB, Pick 2 David Roach FS, 7) Pick 1 Art Carmody K, Pick 2 Brett Kern P. Sound reasonable?

  43. 43. Porter Park Says:

Just thought I would add that in todays draft from Walterfootball (guy did well last year with picks) has the J Long gone before the Chiefs get to him and has Chiefs taken Dorsey then Anthony Collins in the 2nd

  44. 44. ROC27 Says:

Dave, In reply to your comment in #35… I’ll try to fill in the blanks… K: ( we already got a couple to compete) KR: Drafted (probably a natural CB or WR if we dont take Run DMC). OT: Max Starks (we have to match Pittsburghs offer. He’s really our Plan B if we miss out on Jake Long.) OG: Drafted C: Jeff Faine WR: Bryant Johnson ( not an expensive dude, and not too much on the radar) If not, Hopefully Donte Stallworth.  CB: DeAngleo Hall. FB: Owen Schmitty!!.. I just took a stab. Eh.

  45. 45. Double D Says:

Porter – I could live with that. Collins handled the move to left tackle pretty well at KU.

  46. 46. Jeremy Says:

What about Shane Olivea, (RT) He was just released by the Chargers and is 26.   http://www.nfl.com/players/shaneolivea/profile?id=OLI195248

  47. 47. ROC27 Says:

And by the way, it looks like Dallas is really making the move into possibly the 1st pick to take DMC… Which makes our chances of drafting Jake Long a lot more feasable… Cause then you look at it like this… 1st, Run DMC, 2nd Chris Long, 3rd Matt Ryan, 4th Dorsey (or Ellis. Depending on Dorsey’s injury. They need the best guy to fill in for Warren Sapp) and then…. Jake, say hello to your new home, bro!!

  48. 48. Jeremy Says:

Chargers | Team releases OliveaThu, 28 Feb 2008 12:47:03 -0800Kevin Acee, of The San Diego Union-Tribune, reports the San Diego Chargers released OT Shane Olivea Thursday, Feb. 28.

  49. 49. Jeremy Says:

ROC27, I would love to see that scenario, but Jake Long OT is the safest bet and Rams/Falcons/Raiders would all chose Him before us.  I really don’t think Long is going to be there for us.  I would be very happy if he was.

  50. 50. Cornelius Says:

I think we can pretty reasonably take Atlanta out of the situation. If they don’t draft Ryan, Arthur Blank is out of his damn mind. The problems here are St. Louis and Oakland. I’m more inclined to believe that they both have far more pressing needs on the defensive line, and they will both choose one of the Big 3. Or rather, that is what I am desperately, repeatedly telling myself.

  51. 51. Cornelius Says:

Also, forgot to mention that Al Davis is certifiably insane. We really can’t even guess what he’s thinking, and that’s what scares me.

  52. 52. ian Says:

IF we don’t get Long and we get DOrsey or Ellis we will go after Collins or Cherilous from BC that sounds about right, but  if that happens We will most likely get a guard in the third and a corner in the fourth but i would like to see corner in the third and guard in the fourth or OWen Schmitt that kid is going to be a beast

  53. 53. ROC27 Says:

I’ve been reading that St.Louis have been really looking at the D-Linemen in the draft… that theyve even been looking at Gholston. Like, we can think that Jake will be gone by 5, but most sports shows, articles, mock drafts, etc are saying that he’s ours… But again, either person we get… it’ll be a huge upgrade.
