I hate to say it, but Chiefs fans there is no way that Jake Long will be available with the fifth overall pick. He has had an AMAZING combine and has people talking about how he is better than Joe Thomas, who went 3rd overall last season. Long killed the bench press reps with 37 (I just heard on the NFL channel). Take a minute and think about that. A guy that is 6-foot-7 and has a very long wing span ripped off 37 reps!
Today, they are bragging about all the other drills he has participated in and talking about how he could be the number one overall pick. Our readers and everyone else have also talked about how he only committed two penalties and only gave up two sacks in his entire college career. One of those sacks was given up to Vernon Gholston, who is going to be a top 10 pick.
The only way I see the Chiefs getting their hands on Long is moving up to at least the third overall, but that still might not help. I just don’t think that the Dolphins, Rams, Raiders and even Falcons could pass on the most proven player in this year’s draft class (thats right, I said it). That being said, who would you go with if Long is gone….
(Editors Note: Just wanted to let everyone have a comparison, Vince Wolfolk bench pressed 36 reps)

I think that the top 5 athletes are Dorsey, Ellis, C Long, J Long, and DMac……. I wouldn’t even consider Ryan or Clady unless we traded down…….When you draft this high you get the BEST PLAYER! If any of those top five are there you take them or take a really good trade down…..I know some people like Ryan or Clady……. I say "just say no" to Ryan! And I say that I wouldn’t be pissed if they drafted Clady at 5, but I wouldn’t be happy either.
I think the best thing that can happen at this point is to have DMAC fall to us and have us trade down
Dave – I couldn;t agree more with on the top 5 and not reaching at the 5 spot.
You don’t get that many top 5 pick opportunities so you have to make the pick with the best potential player available. If you bust on this pick it could set your franchise back a few years, THANKS RYAN SIMMS!
However, I might disagree with you on Ryan. I think he is smart gifted QB and deserves a chance to be looked at. Lets see how the combine and indivdual workouts go before we flush him down the toliet.
Also, we need to stop with the mentality that Dick Vermeil drafted with, BY NEED. Herm is a great evaluator of talent and he will pick on their capabilities rather than need.
So I know most of you would assume and want Clady if Long is not there, but we need to REALLY consider who is going to be a Pro-Bowler for 10 straight seasons. I don’t think Clady is going to be that. He will be solid, but I dont see him being the next Willie Roaf.
I’m not flushing him down the toilet……I am just saying that if you had DMAC or Ryan who do you draft….If you have Ellis or Ryan who do you draft…..there is no way I take Ryan (at 5) if any of these others are sitting there…..then take into consideration who could be had later in the draft at the QB position – again I am not flushing him, just not sold on him at 5
Dave, I agree if those guys are there we should take them or try to trade with Dallas so they can nab McFadden. I really think that the depth in this draft with OL and CB it would be great for us to acquire two first and maybe some additional picks from Dallas.
I really think that Flacco as our 2nd pick might be a great one. Just depends if we address our needs of OL in FA or not. I really want us to sign two guys in FA so we dont feel handcuffed on draft day.
i was thinkin the same thing last night i want us to draft him so bad if we would of won that damn coin toss but hey were chiefs fans we never get breaks like that lol
Yah, we suck at getting lucky LOL
yep thats wat comes with being a chiefs fan lol
Never say ‘no way’. It’s good to prepare for every contingency, but to say there is no chance he will be there at #5 is going too far. If he isn’t there, I am torn between Dorsey and Clady. I am starting to downgrade Clady a bit because he seems better suited for a zone blocking team.
that is the key – don’t get handcuffed on Draft Day! you are so right on that! ………I tell you what I don’t want to be is Arizona or Miami from last year…..I know it’s easier to look at the Draft a year later, but come on……Arizona and Miami has got to be kicking themselfs for having an opportunity to draft a "DIFFERENCE MAKER" and they went with the "2nd best" at a need position instead………No way – come on Chiefs fans…… let’s draft the difference makers!!
I am going to say ‘no way’. I know I will take some hits on this but I am prepared to say that there is no way. I see other teams looking to move up grab him and that could includes us.
I just heard Herm Edwards say that he thinks that this is the best OL draft in at least 10 years….
well in that case he better do EVERYTHING in his power and find a way to get jake long
Well I actually think that means we don’t have to do anything crazy to get an OL. I know we NEED them, so redbeard dont blast me.
We will rebuild this OL, I have confidence in that, because Herms and Carls job will depend on it.
I just don’t get it – how can you vote for anyone but the "top 5"…….the best thing would be Jake Long no questions asked…….if he is gone one of the DT’s Dorsey or Ellis would still fill a need and they are "game changers"…..If DMac fell to us "I know we don’t need him be he sure as hell would help" – take him or trade down…..and lastly I also know that we don’t need Chris Long but look at what the Giants have done with (4) that’s right (4) starting DE’s …..any of these five would DRAMATICALY change our team! There are great OT’s, CB’s, WR’s, and QB’s in the 2nd 3rd and even 4th rounds this year – please Chiefs DON’T REACH FOR ANYONE.
guys CLADDY is the best left tackle out there!!!period. remember we have had allot of people come to arrowhead because they looked good in their underwear…Claddy will perform on sunday here…and as for Long he played for an over rated team who played virtually nobody…even the ohio st. idiots were over rated this year… and you said it yourself…top talent beat him… ****** As for Long being gone good riddens**** yes Ellis is great, we could use him, but with our need at o-line we cant pass up the ability of drafting a great left tackle… think we could have hugo, and claddy…that would have been something…
I am not gonna blast yas…
reaching is only a reach when the person saying it is wants another player… again remember Hali … honestly who in there right mind wanted the Chiefs to draft Hali, with the first pick… he turned out ok. and thats what I mean… we are wanting a run first team, and sorry merlin (we agree allot) but Claddy can run block… and the passing scheme we use here is zone oriented… that makes him a perfect fit with WATERS… Long is a tech. guy… him and waters wont be compatible!
I said it Claddy isnt a reach. he is top five talent!
Giving up 2 sacks and 2 penalties in an entire college career is considered overrated now.Must be in bizarro world.
It’s only just begun. Just wait until Chris Long, Sedrick Ellis, Darren McFadden, and Glenn Dorsey tear apart the weight room. The top 5 teams have many needs, and Jake Long might find himself at the end of that list. With the Chiefs’ picking at #5, I wouldn’t be surprised if they get their hands on possibly the best OT ever; gift wrapped and delivered straight to their door. Don’t forget about Matt Ryan either; that’s one more player who can help Jake fall right into your Chiefs arms.
Redbeard, Jake Long is the best run blocker in the draft. I have said and every other scout has basically said that. Clady is a REACH at 5, just like Levi Brown was last year for the Cardinals.
Now I am not saying it is a bad reach, but it might be one where instead of having a pro-bowler for the next 10 years he just might be a good player. I want the Pro-Bowler if I am picking in the top 5!
Until I see Clady block some defensive ends from schools other than Utah and Wyoming, I will remain skeptical. He could be great, or he could be the Left Tackle version of Colt Brennan (looks awsome against other WAC teams, looks like a junior varsity guy against the SEC, Big 10, Big XII, etc….)
