No Champagne Wishes And Caviar Dreams?

AUTHOR: Adam Best | IN: Fanzone/Tailgating | COMMENTS: 35 Comments

Lifestyles of the Rich and Famous (Amazon)I understand that Herm Edwards isn’t Robin Leach and that the Kansas City Chiefs aren’t the show Lifestyles of the Rich and Famous, but Herm’s latest comments have really pissed me off. Take a look for yourselves:

We might have champagne taste, but we’ve got beer money.

Excuse me! The Chiefs are going to have $20 million to burn after franchising Jared Allen and cutting dead weight. The Chiefs could pop champagne this offseason like it was a Fifty Cent video.

If they want to avoid renting older players for just a few years — i.e. high-mileage vets like Donnie Edwards, Pat Surtain and Ty Law — fine. But part of rebuilding involves spending money. So we better spend some serious money on those 26-27 year olds about to sign their second contract that Herm taked about. I’m talking about Max Starks. I’m talking about Donte’ Stallworth. I’m talking about Asante Samuel or Drayton Florence.

Like President Truman once said, the buck stops here. If the Chiefs are the Cheaps this offseason and don’t spend a lot of that huge wad of cash they have, I’m boycotting Arrowhead Stadium next season, and I suggest other Chiefs fans join me. We need to send a message to the franchise that our loyalty cannot be taken advantage of any longer. We also need to send a message out to Clark Hunt: This is the Show-Me State, pal, and you have to show us that you care about building a Super Bowl-caliber NFL team.

This is dead serious. We are going to run campaigns for the Chiefs to sign three young, top-notch players to their second contract. If the Chiefs ignore their holes and the fans’ wishes, we should ignore Arrowhead Stadium next season. I’m not saying that they have to sign all or any of the guys we campaign for, but they have to make a splash this offseason free agency-wise. One like they haven’t made in quite some time. We have to put our foot down, so we absolutely will run a boycott Arrowhead Stadium campaign if the Chiefs do a jerk-off job during free agency.

The gauntlet has been thrown down Clark, Herm, King Carl and Co. How will you respond?

i agree. I think the only way to get through to carl and the head office is to boycott.  It seems king carl only cares about money anyways so if sales go down he might start to take notice…

  2. maybe he better sign allen im worried so sick if he dont i will find him and beat his ass!!!!!!!!!!

  3. Taylor says:

we can boycott arrowhead stadium, but whatever dumb desicions the chiefs make this season, make sure you all stay loyal chief fans though

  4. ROC27 says:

You know, Im a HUGE KC Chiefs… one of FEW in Southern California, so the whole boycotting Arrowhead thing isnt in my reach… BUT TO THE WRITERS OF ARROWHEAD ADDICT… Is there a way we can send a letter or email or SOMETHING to our dear Kansas City Chiefs front office?? Because There is NO WAY we can have another rank off season!

  5. Double D says:

I’m hoping he just said it because he heard the phrase somewhere before and thought it would make him sound like he knew what he talking about. Seriously, last time I checked, Herm’s doesn’t have final say on how much the team will spend.

  6. ROC27 says:

If we’re NOT getting Faneca… then like it was mentioned… sign Starks, sign Stallworth, sign Trufant, or Samuel… Look At the Pats… They get straight to the point signing Randy Moss, Junior Seau, Adalius Thomas, And NOW going after Zach Thomas. Dallas went out and snatched up T.O., L. Davis, Hamlin, yada yada ya! C’MON!!!!

  7. ROC27 says:

This is a sport where there is a thin line between horrible and great… All it takes is a smart offseason to get to GREAT… C’MOM CHIEFS GET TO ‘GREAT’!

  8. steven says:

Chiefs have been in a position where they haven’t had any cap room in the off season and they still didn’t make it to the playoffs.  Signing FA’s just because you have the money isn’t going to win the Chiefs any games.  They have mentioned a hundred times if they’ve said it once.  They are building this team through the draft, not Free Agency.  Look at all the money they threw at Kendrel Bell, what did that get them? Nothing.  I’m all for spending money IF it is going to help us win, not just because they have it.

  9. steven says:

ROC27….the year prior to that the Pat’s had all kinds of cap room and didn’t spend it.  They spent this past off season and got an all pro OLB/DE in Thomas and they traded a 4th round pick for Moss and he signed for "cheap".  They spent wisely.   To sign some football players for the sake of signing players isn’t going to help.

  10. steven says:

kcchiefsfan56….exactly!  The Chiefs have money, why not spend it on a known good commodity?  Jared Allen is exaclty what the Cheifs and Chiefs fans need.

  11. steven says:

You have to remember…and I am not trying to defend Carl Peterson here…BUT, his job as GM is just not personnel, it is about all thing Kansas City Chiefs.  He is responsible for running the fiscal side of the Chiefs as well, so yes, his job is to make money for the the Hunts.  Marketing, advertising, sales promotion, everything passes through him…he does more than just decide who is on the roster.

  12. Zach says:

Steven the Kendrell Bell is the exact reason why we want them to go out and get TOP NOTCH FAs. Not this hand me down/injuried/washed up FA that is only stopgap. Lets go out and spend the money on players that could be with the team for the next 6-10+ seasons. We can still use the draft to help build the franchise.

I am realisitic and understand it might only be one big name, but if we get a Max Starks or Asante Samuel I will be one happy mo-fo. I don’t want B to C rate guys….. If its going to be like that then I will just wait for the draft.

  13. Adam says:

Steven, you have to build through the draft AND free agency. What scares me about the Chiefs is they typically gamble on bargin second-tier guys or past-their-prime vets and get burned. They need to just shell out the money and sign 2-3 sure-fire studs.

I agree to some extent on Carl, and that’s why I came out after Herm and Clark. Bill Kuharich and Ray Farmer will sign good players if given permission, but will they be?

  14. Adam says:

Taylor, we here at AA are as loyal as they come. I’ll still wear all my Chiefs garb and watch every second — but I will not be conned by management again. Time to spend and produce a winner!!

  15. steven says:

Well, I know they will sign FA’s there is no doubt, every team does.  But he same people are still in charge of signign them.  I don’t think CP is going to wake up tomorrow and say to himself…"all right, this year I will sign top notch guys that will actually help the team."  I’m sure he feels that way every year.  I don’t get too excited about free agency any more, it never seems to work out all that well.  But hey, maybe I will be surprised and happy this year, but we really won’t know how well this years off season acquisitions do until this time next year.

  16. zman says:

u cant boycott arrowhead. watever happened to goin to games to just have fun and enjoy time wiht family i would love to go to a game cuz i love the cheifs through the good and bad and we cant leave them no matter what now we do need to make moves in FA but if we dont, we dont abandon our team. whatever happened to KC fans being the stongest base in the league cmon

  17. bannyc9 says:

Adam in the beginning, I wasn’t on your side.  Then I saw this…11 Kansas City Chiefs $28050000 There are currently 44  players under contract. That is $28m in cap room.  There are 10 teams with more room than us.  If we don’t jump on these coveted players and offer them what they deserve, we will lose them.

  18. Adam says:

Banny, we were in the top 10 last year when free agency ended. I still wear red and support our players and the best fans in the league, but I will not reward the front office for underspending and taking advantage of how loyal Chiefs fans are. Sometimes I feel like they have this assumption that Chiefs fans will just show up no matter what. We have to take that bullet away from the powers that be. That is why i’m talking about boycotting Arrowhead until we become serious free agent players with all our cap space. The Chiefs owe it to their fans not to be the Cheaps. Period!

  19. Adam says:

Zman, I hate coming at readers and fans hard, but it is a little silly to criticize me for being a real fan. I will stand by the Chiefs no matter what, but I will not always stand by them quietly. I’ve been a Chiefs fans for 29 years now (my whole life) and would like to see us as Super Bowl champions before I expire. That’s not going to happen if we continue this just-do-enough-to-fill-the-seats strategy. The realest fans of us all stick by the Chiefs no matter what, but also stand up to the front office when they aren’t doing all they can to win.

If they want to own a business, then they should go buy into Dunkin’ Donuts chains, malls or movie theaters. This is professional sports, where winning and not money should be the bottom line. A 4-12 season is in the red, not a season when you spend a ton. That’s my $.02.

  20. Crane says:

I think Samuel is kinda risky, he’s at the top of his game right now but he is gonna want Clements money and we won’t pay that…there’s just no effing way Carl will get a 60-80+mil contract on a CB.  I’d rather see the Chiefs grab Derek Anderson than Asante.  I think Stallworth is ovverrated too.  He’s too small to play with the physical corners in the AFC, we got some hellacious ones in our division alone.  I say we draft Jake Long, try to sign Faneca,   Two other stopgaps for our line are Rueben Brown for the bears and Todd Stuessie for the rams, we could get a year or two out of both those guysn while we develop draft picks.I cant believe we signed Billy Cundiff when Rob Bironas and Josh Brown are both out there btw.

  21. ROC27 says:

Steven… Dont get it twisted, bro. Im not an idiot. I dont think "Oh hey. We have money. Lets spend it cause we have it. Derrrrrrr!!!" No, man. Im saying if we have the freakin’ ability to actually sign people, lets do it. I NEVER said that "signing FA’s cause we have the money will win us games" No. BUT Dude! I WILL say that if we sign the RIGHT FA’s, then HELL YEAH, we’re gonna win some games. If you (anyone) know anything about football, the NFL at that, you know that all it takes is that ONE block, that ONE catch, that ONE throw, that ONE run to win the game. And if these Free Agents can make those plays, then they will help us win our games. Its stupid and borderline impossible to bulid an ENTIRE team through the draft… It’ll literally takes YEARS to form a compatable team, not to mention a playoff team… NOT TO MENTION A SUPER BOWL TEAM! And by THAT time, we’d have so many losing seasons, Herm, Peterson, and every head in the organization will be jobless. And where would that leave us?? SQUARE ONE! Trying to figure out a new philosophy…Think Big! Its OUR time to be the team that NO ONE wants to play, the team that when people see on their schedule, they say "Oh sh*t… We got the Chiefs this season." We need to run the table! Im tired of hearing EVEN Raider fans say "Oh yeah, when was the last time YOU guys went to the Super Bowl??" We need to be a threat. We have a future Hall of Fame TE in Tony G, We CAN have a full field, recieving threat, our attacking Defense, we CAN have a nasty O line, a young gun slinging QB, we HAVE a bad ass RB in Roc-A-Fella’s bruiser #27 LJ,  and the rest of our boys are ALL ready to be that team. With the addition of some Free Agents, and smart drafts, we can be a Super Bowl contender EVERY year. Isnt that what we wanna do?? C’mon guys. Im tired of this conservative crap. Make the moves where people will lift their heads. Where people say… "Dang, they are no joke NOW."

  22. larry1c says:

WOW!  You can feel the energy on this topic.  Anybody know the fiscal committments for ‘09 & 10? I don’t.  What of our personnel have contracts due in those years?  Could that have an impact on negotiations this year?  Boycotting Arrowhead will have little if any effect on attendance or King Carl’s decision making.  There is a huge waiting list for season tickets, lack of support on rebuilding arrowhead and a bunch of free agents out there looking to cash in.  At 4-12 how much of a draw does that make us based on our reputation for spending money?  Anyone looking to cash in is not the type of player I am looking for.  Think also of all those local televised games because of the sell outs.  How many years has it been since a game was blacked out?  I too live in So Cal and living in the heart of Raider nation is nothing but silver and black (please note:  Raider fans are much more approachable these days!!!!).  In order for me to watch the Chiefs play, Sunday Ticket is 4 bills a year.  The painful reality is Herm and Carl are installing a system grounded by players obtained in the draft.  Am I a fan of CP?Absolutely not!! Mediocrity has gone on long enough.  Am I a fan of Herm?  Jury is still out but I do like the fact they are trying a different model than the one CP has been using for 2 decades resulting in a "wait til next year" comment at seasons end.  I for one am sickened by the thought that every team in the AFC West has held the Lamar Hunt trophy at least twice since the Chiefs held it last.  Spend the money if it fits within the financial and overall direction of the "system" being put in place.  That includes financial consideration to ‘09 & 10.  It took Eli 4 years to get to the promised land and I for one will give Herm and King Carl another year of installing their system.  Yes, I too am watching for blunders and idiot mistakes in the FA and Draft.  Sorry for the Rant. (PS: Carl, I am not defending you.  You’re just on notice!!!!)

  23. Jeremy says:

Wow!  I love this.  Here is my two cents:  I am all about the draft.  Build through the draft, go younger and sprinkle your roster with high priced free agents if they are not over the hill a la Ty Law (never thought he would return to form in KC).  Listen, Adam, you and I are the same, we bleed arrowheadred.  I too want to see them win a superbowl before I die (i’m 36).  I too am sick of the constant mediocrity spewing from the organization; absolutely sick.  But, I know that winning a superbowl is tough, and throwing money at free agents is not always the answer (ala Redskins).  But I am with you, and love your enthusiasm and love your web site.  I think that the speech Clark Hunt gave earlier this year was great and seemed to be a departure from any rhetoric from Lamar.  It will take some time, but we will be fine.  Our draft’s under Herm seem to be more productive than any under previous coaches.  Just my two Cents everyone.  By the way roc27 what city in So Cal?  I am in Riverside, CA.  Check out my website http://www.attorneyhanson.com.  GO CHIEFS!  I love this!!!!!!!!!!

  24. Adam says:

Crane, While I hear your worries on Samuel — only because of money, he is NOT overrated — I don’t agree on Stallworth. I think he is a perfect No. 2 that will stretch the field and pull in 60-70 catches a year and 5-6 TDs. When I hear any Chiefs fan say stop gap I about lose it. That is the mindset that got us into this mess in the first place. Alan Faneca at 31 is too old. Brown is older than Clint Eastwood at this point. Starks at 27 should be the guy. Derek Anderson is going to cost too much, and he could be a one-year wonder. I really like Derek, but if we go QB we should go Matt Ryan.

  25. Adam says:

I totally disagree with you, Larry. In the next week Chiefs fans and media need to raise more hell about the Chiefs spending money than ever before. Could it might not make a difference? Sure. But it could also be the extra push for the Chiefs to say, OK, the fans and media are really on our ass this time. I think we might see more games like that Tennessee one — where fans were giving away tickets and their were still empty seats — if we don’t do something. And why not do everything we can to influence the front office? I think what we learned from the NFL this year is that you have to draft quarterbacks and spend money on good, still young FAs.

  26. BAS says:

Here’s a rumor about how we can spend some of that cash from DraftDaddy: "According to our main source in Indianapolis, Atlanta Falcons cornerback DeAngelo Hall
is being shopped league wide. Per the source, there are 7 teams
interested in Hall, but the New York Giants have the best offer on the
table, right now. Dallas is in it and Jerry Jones has asked for
permission to talk numbers. The Cowboys may offer their second first rounder.
The word at the convention center that comes from DeAngelo Hall directly is that Rod Coleman and Alge Crumpler and himself are being cleared out because of their support of Micheal Vick
and the fact that the teams’ new G.M. is from the Patriots and wants to
scrub the lockeroom clean. Teams interested in Hall that our source has
confirmed are: Dallas, New York Giants, Tennessee, Miami, Buffalo, New
    Orleans and Kansas City.
Our source also told us to be patient with this deal, as the Falcons
are in no hurry to make this deal. A few years ago, at the 2006
Combine, he correctly told us Javon Walker would be traded from Green Bay to Denver. The trade did happen, but happend on April 29th, 2006."

  27. ROC27 says:

Jeremy, Im from Whittier… Anyway… I think that we make a splash. Im Not saying sign Every Big Name FA… NO. But sign the ones that will help this team.

  28. Adam says:

Maybe it’s time to revisit the DeAngelo Hall campaign? After all, he can’t be more expensive than Asante Samuel will be, and all the other corners except Florence have basically been tagged.

  29. Tim says:

If this was my decision. As in a was making the decisions for the chiefs. Its very simple. Cut Law and Surtain and sign Samuel and Hall. Both guys are incredibly quick, make plays, are both tough and physical like herm loves and most importantly are still young. They could do exactly what our defence is asking Law and Surtain to do but only better. Look at Green bay for example. Thats exactly how our defence should play. When you have two very good and quick corners on each side, it forces the Qb to take his time and second guess himself. When he does that it means more time in the pocket. With our defensive line and linebackers we could easily become one of the best defensises in the league. Now dont tell me this isnt do-able. With the extra cash from Law and Surtain plus alittle bit more from the salary stockpile, we could easily pull of one of the best FA moves in the last decade. Most importantly don’t think of these two players as greedy selfish new age corners who are just in it for the cash because they are not. I seriously believe and would bet my beloved chiefs on the fact that all they are looking for is the respect of a good franchise and a contract that won’t leave them wondering if they will have a team the next year. Look at their histories. both have been stuffed around with their contract and yet both have been consistent play makers. They are two good football players with alot of untapped talent that we have to have. I garuntee, and mark my words, the chiefs will regret not signing one of these two players. One more thing just incase. Doing this would mean we could spend almost our entire first day on O-linemen and sure up our line.

  30. ROC27 says:

Good comment Tim… Good points too. Only thing is, I doubt that we’re gonna let go of Surtain. Dont ask me why… But I DEFINITELY think we need to get at D. Hall. I would love to sign Asante Samuel as well, but I have a feeling that this wouldnt be happening either… It WOULD be pretty major though. Hopefully the Giants dont take him… But with our luck… they probably will. Especially cause they always seem to have an issue with their CB situation…. Anyway, I GOT AN IDEA! Jonathon Vilma LB New York Jets… And Think about it. You know, that Herm would like him on his linebacking corp. DJ, Donnie, and Vilma sounds a lot more appealing than what we’re dealing with now. That way we dont even have to move Donnie to the middle, cause Jonathon knows what he’s doing as MLB… Or maybe we could put Donnie in the middle, cause  he IS getting a bit older and slower…. One more thing… What do you guys think… should we grab Flo Adams????

  31. ROC27 says:

Hey! Shaun Rogers… He seems to be off radar. I havent heard much of where he’s going… but I think we should take in.

  32. Adam says:

Big Baby’s got a big-time weight problem. If we want a big-time DT, why not grab Dorsey or Ellis at five?

  33. Adam says:

Another question: What is everyone’s problem with napoleon Harris? The guy played fine last year despite playing in a new system behind average DT play. He also has played in three different defenses over the past few years. Let’s give this guy some time to gel before we go out a blow money on another LB. My God, I just don’t get why we would bring in another LB. LB IS THE STRONGEST POSITION WE HAVE!

  34. redbeard says:

because he didnt do that much more than the guy we let go…honestly ADAM he played behind better DTs than a guy who was playing the same poss. the year before! CARL and other personell people figure we can do better with cheaper help, thats all that was with Harris… same as letting donnie go the first time. I think at linebacker the chiefs are ok, but they are getting older. And as I have said before, we need back up players who can play, not just be here as a cheap bench guy. I personally dont like starks… just me with that … I dont like having him next to watters… Watters who looked screwed up allot last year, was because he plays better next to a left tackle who can play street ball… a brawler… finness tackles usually technich wise dont fit Watters style…

  35. redbeard says:

Adam I have seen them in the super bowl and I have seen them win it…I also saw them loose it as well…hahaha even the DT deff. unit teams didnt come close to them…not even close. and on Offense the team had two wideouts a tight end and running backs,  so Offensively the Chiefs really do need a second big time wideout… and a O-line… Why in the world do people want so badly to have the Chiefs sign free agent linemen… yes they do have some good ones out there, but I would much rather have a guy like Fitz, come in here from ARIZONA… and draft the O-line… the way I see it we get one of the top two Left Tackles… and can grab a guard who can and will probably start… this would allow us to have two linemen who would both be with us for a long time!!!!! As we have our center of the future… he played right tackle last year and I loved what I saw. so after this draft we would have three out of five linemen start playing together now… left tackle , center, and right guard….  selecting the correct second day players will be what to watch for this year.
