Franchised!
According to Yahoo Sports! the Chiefs placed the Franchise Tag on Jared Allen Monday. Let’s hope the process was a little more peaceful this time. We’ll have to wait and see what each side it saying, if anything, about this. Hopefully Allen will want to remain a Chief.

Profootballtalk.com reports the "non-exclusive version of the tender has been applied to Allen." That means two first round draft picks go to the Chiefs for anyone who would want to sign him.
February 19th, 2008 at 6:24 amHasn’t Allen said that if hes franchised this will be his last year as a Chief? If this is the case you got to get him a long-term deal now, hes a 25 yr old Pro-Bowler, what more do you want?
February 19th, 2008 at 9:28 amFirst of all, no team is going to give up 2 1st rounders for a DE. What this means is that Allen can talk to other teams about what they are willing to pay him next year. Basically both the Chiefs and Allen’s agent want to know what his true market value is before returning to the negotiating table. Both sides just need to find a number they can agree on - I’m guessing it will be somewhere in the range of 40 to 45 million for a 6 year deal with about half of that being guaranteed. Chiefs can certainly afford it and let’s hope that Allen will be happy with that as well.
February 19th, 2008 at 10:31 amTeams can negotiate something other than 2 first round draft picks–IF the Chiefs want to agree to it. For instance, the rumor being denied by the Eagles is Lito Shepard 26 year old 2 time Pro Bowl WR is on the trade block. The Chiefs and Eagles to work out a sign a trade kind of deal and then swap players. The 2 first round draft choices is just a fail safe put in to protect the team.
February 19th, 2008 at 10:40 amobviously Lito Shepard is a CB…that’s what I get for not proof-reading.
February 19th, 2008 at 10:40 amJared will work out a deal. He will be a chief for a long time. Maybe I am readingtoo much into this, but he just bought a restaurant in KC area. Sounds like he likes KC and the area. GO CHIEFS!
February 19th, 2008 at 11:51 amI wouldn’t read too much into his opening up a restaurant. I believe Neil Smith opened Copeland’s here after he joined the Broncos. Having a car dealership here didn’t mean that Marcus Allen ever intended to live here forever. Players that use their names for bars, restaurants, car dealerships, etc are merely trading on their popularity with the locals, not the other way around. Hate to sound cynical but it’s the truth. Jared opening a sports bar here frankly has zilch to do with him signing a long term contract.
February 19th, 2008 at 12:17 pmI still think it’s Carl trying to play hardball. I hope he doesn’t cut off his nose despite his face. Although I don’t think it would surprise many Chiefs fans if a long term deal isn’t reached. Allen is the most popular Chiefs defender since DT. Hopefull Clark Hunt will find a nut sack and tell CP to play hard ball, put on a good show, whatever, but SIGN ALLEN, sooner rather than later. Allen holds all the leverage, regardless of what Carl might say. He led the league in sacks despite missing two games, he is young, he has improved every year, he has quit nippin’ the sauce. Jared Allen is exactly what Chiefs fans want, a person to be the face of an every improving defense.
February 19th, 2008 at 12:19 pmWe know what we have in Jared. We know how to use him. He knows he is productive in our defense, and a pivotal part of it. He will be paid handsomely. He is not guaranteed anything but money if he signs somewhere else. He is loved here and has a certain comfort level. I would be surpised if he holds out or does not sign a long term deal. Carl will pay him. Remember Carl usually takes his time. Maybe I am too optimisitc, but I really do not see Jared going anywhere. I am willing to bet on it. GO CHIEFS!
February 19th, 2008 at 1:16 pmTwo first-rounders for Allen? I might consider it.
February 19th, 2008 at 4:45 pmAs happy as this makes me that he’ll almost definitely be around another year, it makes me so sick that Carl can’t sign one of the most dynamic and energetic defensive players in the league to a long term deal.
February 19th, 2008 at 6:00 pmi swear if carl lets him get away i will drive my ass from miss to kc and beat hiss ass
February 19th, 2008 at 6:04 pmGuys I know we all want to blame Carl, but Jared might be playing hardball too. He probably wants the ability to talk with the other teams around the league to find out his value.
I really believe this is a process and it will get done…. Plus I have always agreed with Carl by not giving him this deal last season when JAred had a 4 game suspension plus possibility of being suspended for a year with his next violation.
(Lets just say that Jared does do something stupid and gets a year suspension, then Chiefs fans will be bitching about why Carl gave him a contract. Thats how we work thse days until the King is retired.)
February 19th, 2008 at 6:17 pmThe Mullet Man is here to stay. Im pretty sure. The ONE thing Im worried about is whether the long term deal will get settled by Camp. I mean, the last thing this team needs is another holdout. We have the money. Its like "SIGN THE MAN!!!" He’s the 2007 sack leader. 15.5! C’mon! Thats a big deal and the guy is BARELY 25! He’s not Michael Strahan, who’s in his final years. Jared is just getting started. He’s the leader of this D! Why? Cause he CAN be! The best leader we’ve had since D.Thomas… So, with THAT said… Kinda off topic… but I wanted some opinions on this… MLB? Should we stick with what we have? Or look to the draft? OR!!! Free Agency (though most LBs are older. ie. Junior Seau, Teddy Bruschi, Derrick Smith). I havent really commented on the whole Stallworth thing… but I think it would be great for us. Gonzo, D.Bowe, and Stallworth… Dude! That sounds too good to be true…. NEXT! I JUST heard that Phillidelphia is allowing Lito Sheppard to look at other teams… Now, I like him for our CB situation. If we dont draft any CBs in the draft I would hope that we’d already have either Sheppard AND OR Marcus Trufant. So many possiblities. Time will tell.
February 19th, 2008 at 7:53 pmJared is playing hardball? I don’t know, he just wants his money to ensure his future, and he knows he’s better than basically every other DE in the league. He’s committed to the city and the team, why the team isn’t reciprocating that committment is beyond that.
February 20th, 2008 at 1:18 amOther teams won’t negotiate with him unless they are willing to give up the 2 first round picks. What benefit does it serve another NFL team to help out a player finding out what he is worth if they don’t intend to sign him? I agree with the setiment that no team is going to give up 2 first rounders. I could be wrong. I’m sure Allen is playing hardball, like I mentioned earlier, he has all the leverage. If you have the league leader in sacks on your team, and there is a significant chance he is going to get better—you have to pay him. SHOW JARED THE MONEY!
February 20th, 2008 at 6:47 amWhoever said DE isn’t worth 2 first rounders is insane. DE is one of the top 3 positions on the field. QB/OT (Mostly LT, for right handers)/DE are the top 3, not necessarily in that order. They are game changers, their performance affects the outcome of any given game 9/10 times. Say your QB throws 5 picks.. most likely you are going to lose. Whereas if he throws 5 TD’s… Chances are good you’ll win. Say your LT gives up 6 sacks (As Winston Justice did for the Eagles) most likely you are going to lose. Say he dominates the line and gives your QB all day to throw. A mostly winning percentage there. Say your star pass-rushing DE gets no sacks/tackles in a game. Ouch. You know the trend by now. Say he gets 3 sacks, a forced fumble, hits the quarterback 5 more times, and swats a ball down, all on top of 6 tackles. Great D, great chance to win. One could argue that MLB is the ‘leader of the D’, but just look at what DE’s did for the Giants against the Pats. On a sidenote: if I had the ability to get Allen for 2 1st rounders, I’d snatch him up quick. A young pro-bowl STUD pass-rushing DE, with the ability to decoy/make great plays on special teams/offense, who can be a leader/mainstay on your team for the next 6-10 years? Piece of cake. Done deal.
February 21st, 2008 at 10:15 pmCarl is an idiot and one reason for allot of behind the locked doors… atmosphere, with the players and staff and managment at Arrowhead, outwardly we see problems and stress comming from the players quite often, but behind closed doors, it is so much worse… the community and fan support, along with the whole metro areas’ appeal… do so much in keeping players here in KC… yes the money talks… but the organization under King Carl isnt what it used to be.
