Stray Arrows: Mooooose?
Since we’ve been talking so much about Bernard Berrian in the comments today — and I do absolutely think he will be resigned by the Bears, especially now — it’s ironic that the Chicago Bears released Muhsin Muhammad today. Is it just me, or is Moose a Chan Gailey/Herm Edwards football player? I think the Chiefs will really be interested in this guy. Then again, I do recall what Clark Hunt said about vets, but he would be cheaper than a Donte’ Stallworth-type pick-up. More from Cat Crave:
The Chicago Bears have released Muhsin Muhammad. The report comes from Adam Schefter at the NFL Network.
Muhammad had become a fan favorite in Carolina prior to being released in a money-saving roster move three years ago. But it’s possible his career could be coming to an end. He’s a 12-year veteran.
His career stats include 742 receptions, 9934 yards and 56 TD’s.
Muhammad doesn’t have burner speed, but he’s fast enough. And he’s one of the toughest SOBs in the league. Dude plays every single game, and even played with a broken hand back in 2005. He’s a good blocker as well, and has great hands — especially in the red zone. He’d also be a great mentor for Dwayne Bowe.

I also want to point out that this hints that the Panthers might let Carter walk. Additionally, I think this proves that the Bears plan on throwing big bucks at Berrian. Just wanted to reiterate that POV.
February 18th, 2008 at 5:46 pmMaybe a couple of years ago. Like you said, he doesn’t fit the mold of being younger. Although I liked the idea of picking up Keshawn Johnson last year before he decided to go broadcasting.
February 18th, 2008 at 6:25 pmThing is, I think Moose is better than Keyshawn was at that point. Their QB play and running game was worse than ours was last year. And he played pretty good when it wasn’t Rex, aka the Sex Cannon. Sign him for one year like the Browns did Jam. Moose loves getting paid — that’s why he left Carolina — so give him a good one-year deal and watch him play his ass off in a contract year.
February 18th, 2008 at 6:32 pmI know it isn’t as sexy as bringing in Berrian or Stallworth, but it might be more likely — not to mention a better fit. He could be our Joe Jurevicius.
February 18th, 2008 at 6:33 pmOur Bobby Engram.
February 18th, 2008 at 6:34 pmMy one worry would be that Moose in his younger days, was kinda the same type of player as Bowe is now. More of a physcial, possession type of guys. At least Kennison had some kind of speed. I wouldn’t mind Moose as long as we can get a Stallworth or Hackett to play the 2 and keep Moose has a 3rd.
February 18th, 2008 at 6:51 pmi dont care but brodie needs more weapons perios bowe gonsalves we need one or 2 more one free agency one draft
February 18th, 2008 at 7:15 pmIf we cut Kennison, I can see us signing a vetern WR to help the younger guys develop. I don’t see a big ticket signing though.
February 18th, 2008 at 7:25 pmyea we never do we’ll never pull a 49ers—nate clements but 69 just got slapped with the tag if he winds up walking away i will drive my ass from mississippi to kc find peterson and beat his ass!!!!!!!!!!!
February 18th, 2008 at 7:31 pmSigh. I really would’ve enjoyed seeing Berrian in a Chiefs uniform. Oh well.
February 18th, 2008 at 8:25 pm"just say no"
February 18th, 2008 at 8:43 pmjust say no , yes I know someone just said that…hahaha but its true just say no… he isnt TO, or Moss…
February 18th, 2008 at 8:53 pmToo slow & old although he was the man in Carolina for a while. I’d prefer Stallworth at this point, I’m okay having more of a possession guy at #2 but not one as old as Moose, and I’d really like a speed guy like Stallworth at #2 to help give the offense the balance it despearately needs.
February 18th, 2008 at 9:45 pmStallworth is going to be pricy, and we aren’t going to sign more than one wideout. At least it would be a big surprise. Moose isn’t that slow, and he might be a better fit for a ball control offense. Bowe is an unbeleivable talent, but he doesn’t run routes as well or catch the ball as well as Moose. And think how great Moose would be as a mentor.
Hackett isn’t really a burner either, but I like him a lot. Again, if we want a burner at bargin-basement prices that guy is Drew Carter.
Bryant Johnson is also out there.
I know Chiefs fans want sexy signings, but seldom to we ever go after top-tier guys. Too expensive.
I think Berrian is a definite no, and Stallworth is somewhat of a long shot. These other guys are more likely. Other long shots are Faneca, Samuel and probably even Trufant.
February 18th, 2008 at 11:59 pmOne more point: Moose was a very productive No. 2 on a Super Bowl team with a bad QB two years ago. He isn’t washed up. In fact, I thought he played real well when Brian Griese was under center last year instead of Rex or Orton.
February 19th, 2008 at 12:01 amMoose is too slow. After the last several years of Eddie Kennison being our best receiver I would think that most Chiefs’ fans would NOT want him coming to KC. Its pretty obvious the guy would be a good influence on the locker room, but I’m not sure he’s young enough to be that good influence at a good price.
February 19th, 2008 at 2:57 amWith a few exceptions, veteran, free agent WRs that are any good are expensive and tend to be prima donnas. We need to draft a burner. I know that D Jack is probably not in the cards for us but maybe somebody like Donnie Avery (Houston), Harry Douglas (Louisville), Eddie Royal (VTech), or Dexter Jackson (Appalachian State)? With the exception of Douglas, all these guys could also be used in the return game. Gotta love 2fers.
February 19th, 2008 at 10:22 amUp until recently I wanted them to draft a legit #2 reciever in either the 2nd or 3rd round ie…Sweed, Bowman, Hardy or whoever fell to them. Now I am starting to think that we target the best fit (money & scheme) for our #2 through free agency (Stallworth, Hackett, or Johnson) and then get a "slot reciever" as our #3 in either the 4th or 5th round. The wide reciever position is deep so someone should be there out of Hall, Douglas, Avery, or Jackson.
February 19th, 2008 at 11:40 amI thought we were relatively committed to Webb being the #3.
February 19th, 2008 at 6:02 pmAdam… I agree most times, than not. But You said that D.Bowe doesnt catch the ball as well as Moose… I DISagree… Look back at his highlight reel, bro. D.Bowe isnt our #1 for nothing… Now, Moving on. Moose IS a great player fine. But to bring up what he’s done in the past doesnt mean much. We all made that mistake with Ty Law… I say we just step up and bring in Mr.Stallworth. It’ll add so much to our Offense. Him being our #2 frees up Gonzo more often than last season, giver Brodie More LEGIT options and LJ a right to run. Think About It.
February 20th, 2008 at 4:41 pmSome great comments here. I do try to consider the long term effect of these signings. Especially when it comes to cap money, not now, but over the next couple of seasons. Stallworth would be a great acquisition, but is also looking for a payday! We cannot afford to do that in a year when we are also negotiating with a cornerstone of the defense and a franchise player. Further, as a general groundrule, you don’t spend a great deal in FA when you’re rebuilding from within. We have plenty of holes on the offensive line and will either be signing a top 5 pick OR possibly even 2 first rounders (depending on trading down and/or negotiate picks). Dollar for dollar and considering our position right now, I see Moose as a better pick with a one year deal. Adam’s point earlier was right on. He was Griese’s go-to guy for possession catches and came up big with some of those catches. I think that brings a different type of player we need from the Free Agent market when you also factor in a new Offensive Coordinator. Bringing in anyone who is looking for a payday is the wrong message to send to these kids….
February 21st, 2008 at 12:39 pmJeff Webb sucks
February 22nd, 2008 at 12:59 amlarry1c… Again, we HAVE the money to sign Stallworth… He would spread out the opposing Defense for us. He’s small (sure) but fast as hell… look at Wes Welker… Ha. Its kinda funny, cause last I checked "Mooooose" didnt stand for Terrell Owens or Randy Moss. Sure, he was a good target for Griese in Chicago, but we arent Chicago, and Brodie isnt Griese. We gotta get over these "just ok" picks. We need to make some big moves now. Its time.
February 22nd, 2008 at 2:48 amand Mr. "Crane" Jeff Webb doesnt suck. He’s young. He has a lot of potential.
February 22nd, 2008 at 2:49 amROC27…Understand money there. Don’t need to convince me of that. However, Moose or Stallworth? The ball control system is whats being put in. DV and the 2nd coming of the greatest show on turf isn’t going to happen. Bowe is young, Bordie is young and we’re about to install a youth movement on the offfensive line. Any passing to be done will be done with play action pass or a "3 step drop and get it out" until some confidence is put in place collectively as a offensive unit. Ball control and time of possession will become critical in any scheme put in from week to week. I am of the opinion Moose has better hands in coverage and over the middle. Tony won’t be around forever and that opens up a young tight end. Bowe has the speed to take any coverage long for our shots. Thats not to take away anything from Stallworth. I’ve just seen more of moose is all.
