Stray Arrows: Donte’ Stallworth In Red?
OK, nobody has come out and said that — or even hinted at it, actually. It does look like the New England Patriots are going to cut ties with WR Donte’ Stallworth, though. Wouldn’t Stallworth make a perfect N0. 2 WR for the Chiefs? More from Fanhouse:
Donte’ Stallworth, who had a solid first season in New England with 46 catches for 697 yards, will almost certainly be released, when you look at these details of his contract:
the deal includes a $6 million option bonus, due to be paid on February 25. Stallworth also is set to earn a $2 million roster bonus on February 29.
There’s just no way the Patriots are going to pay Stallworth $8 million in bonus money, meaning that unless they can agree on a new contract in the next week, Stallworth is about to become an unrestricted free agent
When you look at his stats from last year, they don’t necessarily scream at you at first. Then you remember that he played third banana to Randy Moss and Wes Welker — who both had record-breaking seasons — all season long. And look at his stat averages from the past four seasons: 53 catches, 784 yards and five touchdowns. The old knock on him was that he couldn’t stay healthy enough to be productive, but those stats show that he has clearly been a productive wideout. He also has the game-breaking speed we should be looking for in a No. 2, as evidenced by the fact that he’s had a catch of over 43 yards in each of his six seasons (not to mention catches of 69 and 84 yards, respectively, in his past two seasons)
I think we have to take a look at Stallworth. He’d be a perfect fit.

Sounds like a good plan, you can plug in good WR’s via free agency; as opposed to O-line, where there usually no good players avalible. We need a second threat on the outside to make room in the middle, I wouldn’t be suprized if the Chiefs took a WR in the 3rd if they don’t do something like signing Stallworth
February 18th, 2008 at 2:35 pmI completely agree. Fortune smiles on the Chiefs, almost all of the "major" holes have great options availiable in Free-Agency(DB, FA, WR). Stallworth, Hackett of the Seahawks, or Patten of the Saints would make great "low-key" pickups without spending the big money on a high profile receiver. Their statistically underwhelming seasons belie their value.
February 18th, 2008 at 2:38 pmEr, I meant OL, not FA.
February 18th, 2008 at 2:38 pmActually, there are more quality O-lineman out there this year than any other position. Then again, lineman are always highly sought after. We saw that last offseason with Leonard Davis and Co. WRs could be scarce, because I hear that the Bears are going to resign Bernard Berrian.
February 18th, 2008 at 2:40 pmCornelius, Hackett is also a tremendous option that I have been talking about for over a year now. Great call. He was injured with a high-ankle sprain last year (can happen to anybody), and played alongside three other talented WRs. Patton is a bit long in the tooth, but not a bad option. I prefer Drew Carter out of Carolina. I think he could be the biggest sleeper out of the entire crop.
February 18th, 2008 at 2:52 pmStallworth ought be an upgrade but of course that also assumes that Brodie will put the ball somewhere in the general vicinity of Donte’s hands. Still a big if right there.
February 18th, 2008 at 4:56 pmI would love to get either Hackett or Stallworth. My one worry is that after the year Stallworth had, how much money is he going to ask for. Does anyone reallly think King Carl will spend a lot of money on a #2 reciever?
February 18th, 2008 at 5:07 pmI really think Drew Carter is an option. Carolina seems cheap, and they have to choose between him and Colbert. Plus, they already have Smitty and Jarrett. He could be a super sleeper. And, no, I don’t have a man crush.
February 18th, 2008 at 5:13 pmi honestly think bernard berrian is a good pick up he’s big and physical reaceiver but stallworth sounds good too lol
February 18th, 2008 at 5:17 pmLike I said earlier, it looks like Berrian will be retained by the Bears.
February 18th, 2008 at 5:22 pmok another will be L. Fitzgerald, from Arizona, there is a VERY HIGH chance he doesnt get resigned this year with the cardinals… the last contract he signed has, allot of the same feeling to it as does stallworths. But they are still trying to work out a deal with Larry … basically he would kill the cap in Arizona if they dont restructure, which btw Larry doesnt seem willing to do.
February 18th, 2008 at 5:44 pmSpeaking of low key acquisitions, how about Bryant Johnson from Arizona? When you’re on the same team as Larry and Anquan, yeah, you’re probably going to be 3rd on the chart. But I’ve watched him make some spectacular acrobatic catches, and would love for him to be doing that in ‘the other other Red Jerseys.’
February 18th, 2008 at 6:11 pmWhat this blog really tells me is that there is a lot of very good WR’s out there this year. All but a couple seem to meet Clark Hunt’s criteria of being young and ascending. Now the question is do we need one or two of these guys. Really I would like to see a Bryant Johnson and maybe a Hackett to feel up our roster. I really feel Kennison and Parker are gone. That would give a nice WR roster of Bowe, Sippio, Webb, and these two. All nice players that are younger.
February 18th, 2008 at 6:21 pmOr stallworth
February 18th, 2008 at 6:51 pmBanny I am with everyone on Sippio… he is one guy who unless you throw the ball thirty feet over his head will catch it… but it goes back to the basics.. HE WONT RUN THE ROUTES… that is the only reason he didnt play last year… if he would learn the routes and run them he will start!!! And yes there are recievers available… as For some if they restructure they wont be available… and as for a speedy reciever, that doesnt work when the QB has only two seconds to deliver the ball (hint o-line…hint hint)…
February 18th, 2008 at 7:12 pmI think he’d be a great addition. His last few teams have been "win now" teams, and at this point in his career is he ready to go back to the Saints teams he was on where they were always building towards the future?
February 19th, 2008 at 3:10 amAs a Chiefs fan in the UK I probably don’t get the same exposure to info you guys do but I watched a lot of games with Stallworth in last season. The guy is unstoppable when he gets the ball. He’d be awesome in KC.
February 19th, 2008 at 4:40 amThe YAC with Gonzalez, Bowe, and Stallworth would be insane.
February 19th, 2008 at 8:32 amRedbeard, I’ve never read one place where an insider or team official stated Sippio didn’t run routes correctly. You have been an info hawk in the past, and even seem to have valid inside sources, so maybe there is something to this…
I have read that he is definitely in the plans for next year. They wanted to apparently give Samie the chance to save his job before they moved on. The Chiefs will move on, though.
February 20th, 2008 at 2:49 amPaul, he was a third, fourth, fifth and even sixth option — behind Moss, Welker, Gaffney and even Watson and Faulk at times — last year. Players also care about playing and getting the ball. ESPECIALLY wide receivers, who seem to have the biggest and most fragile egos in the NFL, possibly in captivity as Herm says.
February 20th, 2008 at 2:53 amDave S., awesome to know we are reaching Chiefs fans in the UK. That made my night!
February 20th, 2008 at 2:53 amAdam,I got pretty excited when I thought the Chiefs were coming to wembley next season(although no doubt you guys would prefer them to stay at home).I guess I’ll have to make do with booing the chargers
