The Chiefs have announced that they have released OL John Welbourn — thank you Chiefs! This guy was a bust after he got caught using the “Juice.” I am delighted to see that the OL is at least going to have some new faces.
- Chiefs release Welbourn as offseason remodeling start – ESPN
The Kansas City Chiefs have released offensive guard John Welbourn in what figures to be the beginning of a postseason roster shakeup.
The Chiefs might also choose to not re-sign starting center Casey Wiegmann. Kyle Turley, a part-time starter at both guard and tackle, announced at the end of the season he was retiring.
Also released were two backups who saw almost no playing time last year, running back Gilbert Harris and defensive end Khreem Smith
Other players who might be released include cornerback Ty Law, tight end Jason Dunn, wide receiver Samie Parker and linebacker Kendrell Bell.

They also let Chris Terry Go. Can you say complete revamp of the O-line! Thank god!
POSTED 3:41 p.m. EST, February 15, 2008CHIEFS TO CUT LAWA league source tells us that the Kansas City Chiefs soon will be releasing veteran cornerback Ty Law.Law, 33, was cut by the Patriots in February 2005. He played for the Jets that year, and then signed with the Chiefs in 2006.Signed through 2010, Law is due to earn a base salary of $6.5 million in the coming season. Source: profootballtalk.com
Where is Kendrell Bell’s pink slip? How about Greg Wesley? Eddie Kennision? Lets cut the fat!
I can easily see Bell and Law being the next to go.
I thought Law couldn’t be cut until JUne 1st because of his contract.
Jeremy -
Chris Terry was cut during the season, thats how bad he was playing…. LOL
Let me take that back on Law, he needs to be cute before June 1st.
highest-priced players. Cornerback Ty Law has the Chiefs’ highest
individual salary-cap figure at $9.05 million. But Law would cost the
Chiefs only $3.15 million against their cap if he is released before
June 1.
Another thing that makes me upset is that Priest is still counting against are cap, 4 million plus to be exact.
Once he retires he will only cost 2.7 million. Why aren’t people going to bitch that his cap figure will cost us next year to? Where are the LJ haters on Priest? I hate that we have 2.7 million against our salary cap for this season
Zach, every team has dead cap money. We will probably have a decent amount as we weed out the older, expensive, unproductive players. Just business as usual.
I know, I just went on my little rant.. Kendrell Bell is still going to eat some after we get rid of his worthless a$$
he was a horrible pick up just another vermil bust he excells in a 3-4 defense thats why he was so good with pitt
he wasnt that good in the three four… or they would have kept him…lol free agents are free agents for a reason!!! and if they do cut law then adding that free agent has also cost us… the chiefs need speed players on deffence , and even at linebacker which has gotten older as of late… see we are drafting players who in the later rounds dont fit, not with the old addage, catch and release… we have for quite some time released good and great players, prior to aquiring younger talent to replace them… and ZACH… holmes is still the bigger MAN… hands down over LJ the cry baby *I dont have any running lanes* Johnson…hahahahaha
so as of now the chiefs are in need, allot of need on the o-line. so draft two in the first two rounds… then switch to deff. with both third round picks… this way even if we get at least one starting free agent o-lineman we have two very good players for our dessperate o-line needs… to me it is an even bigger need than the fans wanting to finally get a wideout last year!!!!!!!!! why not start now… we’ve been thre years late on the o-line already…
Kendrell Bell, to his credit, played inside backer in the 3-4. He should have been made our middle linebacker when Maslowski went down (wasn’t it the next year that we picked up Bell? I can’t remember…) Then we wouldn’t have started Kawika for 2 years and had ppl gripe about that (although I think he improved alot after that first season.) We just didn’t use Kendrell that well. He’s better against the run and not so much against the pass, we had him on the outside guarding tight ends most of the time he played, so he was screwed from the get-go. Chris Terry we never should have even played him. At over 30, he had less than 5-6 years to have an impact even if he was good. Which he wasn’t. We could have just started a rookie/young free agent/waiver-wire pickup, and had just as much success (none, or barely any) and had the guy get some experience. And get rid of Wesley? Are you serious? He played probly 40-50% of snaps last year. Maybe that’s a bit exaggerated, but he was in a whole hell of a lot more than Jon ‘quick-draw’ McGraw (ahah, sorry, nickname of mine for him) and he’s got a little left in the tank. He’s good for at least another year, old stanky hair (G-Wes) was stout in the redzone, which was what I was worried about having young safeties in there for.
Finally this all begins, a year or two late but its finally happening; hopefully we can reload well, the horrible decisions of the past decade need to have a page turned on them.
