Dick Vermeil, love him or hate him, had a philosophy when he first arrived on the scene in Kansas City. His belief was that in order to be a competitive, well balanced, winning football team you needed to have three things on offense. You first needed a QB, the Chiefs traded for Trent Green from the St. Louis Rams and immediately named him the starter. The second thing needed according to DV was a running back, the Chiefs subsequently signed a no name free agent from the Baltimore Ravens by the name of Priest Holmes. The third (and some would argue the most important of the three) Vermeil believed you needed a pro bowl type left tackle to protect the QB and allow the RB to gain yardage. After all, what good are th first two if they can’t stay on their feet or find any holes to run through? The Cheifs traded the New Orleans Saints a third round draft pick for a perennial pro bowl LT in Willie Roaf.
The Chiefs today, have 2 out of 3 in place to once again have an offense capable of taking over a game and winning it. Unlike the days of the Vermeil era, the Chiefs also have a defense that can step up and win a game as well. The Chiefs have Brodie Croyle penciled in as their starting quarterback (he typed with his fingers crossed), regardless of what you might read or see about the Chiefs might not be able to pass on a franchise quarterback in this years draft, don’t believe it. First off, there is no franchise QB in this years draft, not in the first round anyway, secondly, if the Chiefs would draft a QB, then it’s back to square one. I mean, are the Cheifs willing to scrap all the hard work they have put in since Edwards has taken over, just to turn the reigns over to a first round QB who won’t be as good as Croyle is now? I don’t think so.
Larry Johnson, the much maligned running back of the Kansas City Chiefs, will be in the backfield once again for the Chiefs next season like it or not. LJ has proven that with the right play calls and the more importantly, an effective offensive line in front of him, he can and will produce big numbers–Pro Bowl numbers.
Sedrick Ellis the impressive DT out of USC has done the Chiefs a huge favor with his play in the Senior Bowl. He is now, according to some “professional” analysts the #1 defensive tackle coming out this year. If he continues on and has an impressive combine in Indy later this month, then one of the teams in front of the Chiefs will most likely take him. Now, don’t get me wrong, I’m all for the drafting of a potentially game changing DT, but not at the expense of passing on a potential franchise left tackle, and that’s just what Jake Long is.
Jake Long is a beast, period. The nit-pickers will tell you he is not as “refined” as Joe Thomas-last years #1 overall LT chosen by the Browns. HOG WARSH! (editor’s note: That’s a WV saying I like to use every now and then.) Mr. Long gave up one sack his senior year to another potential first round pick DE-Gholston from Ohio State. I made it a point to watch LT’s this past season when I was partaking in a little college football, paying particular attention to the players that were hyped as being suited for the NFL. I watched Long, several times this year, and I’m telling you, he is a force. He is a leader, he was a man among boys in College-dominating many who lined up across from him on Saturday-and I don’t see any reason why he can’t do much of the same in a Chiefs Uniform. Do you think it’s a coincidence that the Browns took Thomas with their first pick and they went on to barely miss the playoffs while their first round QB sat on the bench? Think about it.
Now obviously, for every Joe Thomas or Orlando Pace, there is a Robert Gallery, I admit that. But that is what the draft is about…potential. Jake Long has the potential to be a mainstay on the Chiefs offensive line for a long time to come. Yes, he’s had a knee injury, but what college player hasn’t? Jake Long is the perfect fit for the Chiefs, the O Line is in shambles, the running game sucks, and Brodie or Huard (or whoever), doesn’t have enough time to look at the first WR in their progression, let alone the third.
Draft Jake Long, leave Brian Waters alone, Niswanger playing center, sign or draft (in the second round perhaps?) a right guard, and move DMac to right tackle. Now you have a line to run behind and a line that will protect Brodie giving him the confidence needed to become a legitimate starting quarter back in this league.
If you see me write it once, you’ll see it 100 times, games in the NFL are won and lost by the lines, both offensive and defensive. If you don’t believe me, look at the Super Bowl last night. How many times did Tom Brady get sacked, hurried or knock downed compared to the 18 games they won?
