McShay's Latest Mock Has Us Landing Jake Long

by Draft

Jake Long to the Chiefs (ESPN)

First off, it’s good to see that the scouts are starting to think that Darren McFadden (OAK), Glenn Dorsey (MIA) and Matt Ryan (ATL) will be gone before we pick. It’s also great to see that the Rams are thinking defensively, evidenced by their projected pick of Chris Long. That would make the Chiefs decision a no brainer at five, as Jake Long would be the automatic pick. Long would be a perfect fit, giving us the same thing Joe Thomas gave the Browns one year ago.

My only complaint with Todd McShay‘s assessment is this: Is defensive end a weakness for us? Really? Another Tamba Hali doubter. Frustrating!

larry1c, You made a point with your comment ( "way too much slack on recievers") but I dont think that was JUST Ty... Every game I watched (every single one)... I saw our CBs leaving SO MUCH cushion between them and the recievers. I'd be yelling at the TV like "JAM THE MOTHER F*er!!!" We need young CBs that are aggresive, tough, and NOT afraid to jump some routes. Our Safetys (I'm proud of) are becoming better and better every game, they can pick up some slack... but not as much as when Ty slips and falls at least once a damn game... Besides that I think our D could end up being BETTER than #5 next year... Nap Harris also isnt the answer. Im wondering if DJ has what it takes to become the brains of the opperation at MLB and maybe we can pickup the LB from USC, Rivers.... Wow. So many possibilities.

Surtain' s contract is up in 2011. Law's is up in 2010.  Sapp's contract was up at the end this past season.

Adam, I think that Surtain still has 4 yrs on his contract (could be wrong) and if so thats a salary cap hits for 4 yrs if we let him go.  For that reason, I think we will probably keep him.  I was very disappointed in Law's defense this year.  Couple of picks yes, but tackling was poor and way too much slack on recievers.  Could have been the scheme, but I think he's lost more than 1 step.  My only point is to pick up a couple of corners for development.  Free agency opens in a little over a month so will be interesting to see what moves are made to close the holes and prepare for the draft.

Merlin, I agree -- Clady and Long are good options, Long better than Clady. Dorsey is also a good option, but maybe not as big of a need. But he has superstar-type talent. I would also hold out on a verdict on all of those guys except Boomer and Svitek. They are both playing out of position and failing. Those projects need to end. Time to move on.

Sometimes, I think as fans, we get off track. Drafting a WR or QB in the first round? We could bring the next Otis Taylor and Len Dawson and it will not help much if Lenny is spending his time running from the rush or throwing the ball away due to the rush. As trite a phrase as it is, games are won in the trenches. Unless we fix the O-line, it's not going to matter much what else we do. As far as the D-line is concerned, that's where it gets tricky. Often, D-lineman take a year or 2 to develop. Remember, Neil Smith was considered a bust after one year. As fans, the hardest thing for us to gauge is the development of young Chiefs. How good are Turk and Tank going to be next year? Can Niswanger make a good center? How about Herb Taylor? what kind of potential does he have? Can Svitek be a decent backup lineman? How good can Boomer be at FB? Honestly, I don't think I can answer those questions well. I doubt any of us really can answer them with authority. It's fun to speculate, but I can't see us going too far away from O-line, CB early. Unless someone like Dorsey falls into our lap, I see Jake Long or Ryan Clady as our first round pick. My disaster scenario is that they are both gone by #5. I have a feeling that Clady will rise on the draftboards. I would love to trade back a bit, but I don't want to get behind Denver. I think they may take Clady if available.

Larry1c, yes, signing Allen long term would be ideal. Also, if we cut both Law and Surtain the cap hit probably wouldn't be as expensive as keeping one of them, and we'd have I'm guessing 10-plus million to spend elsewhere. If we keep one, I think it should be Law, but it sounds like Surtain is more likely. As I've always said, I think Law would make an outstanding free safety at this point. And, again, I'm not sold on Page.

XXXLP, great points on Medlock. Unfortunately, Carl Peterson doesn't exactly like to admit that he's wrong, especially for the second or third time on one player. Not gonna happen. I think he should have been given more time, too, but that wasn't and won't be the case.

Double D, I think Jackson is an extreme longshot, but I'll definitely do my homework and get some videos up on the other guys here soon.

DeSean Jackson would be my first choice to address both WR and the return game needs.  Doubt the Chiefs will be in the right position (read sufficiently motivated) to draft him in the 1st round.  As far return guys go however, Donnie Avery, Leodis McKelvin, or DeJuan Tribble would be my 2nd round choices depending upon how which one is available and how they fair at the combine. Later rounders that I'd consider to as upgrades to special teams would be Eddie Royal, Terrence Wheatley, Chevis Jackson, Tom Zbikowski, and Rafael Little.

There are alot of holes, at least a 3 O-line spots, LT, RG and I have a feeling Casey Weigman is done for. Maybe one more year, that's it. A blocking fullback, at least 1 D-Tackle, dunno how long Boone is going to last, or if Turk will pan out for sure, although he was coming on at the end of the season. MLB, Donnie isn't going to last much longer at OLB, 2 Corners, a Kicker is needed, Carney can't even kick off to the 10 yard line, much less the endzone, usually. Kick returner/Punt returner is needed. And good point about Medlock Double D, actually I think his problem was the holder. He's a left footed kicker, and theres just a bit of difference between holding for a righty and lefty. If you looked at some of his kicks, going clear back to the offseason when we got to see Hard Knocks, some of the holds weren't exactly perfect, and he did still drill some of his kicks right down the center, he had a powerful leg, at least, so he almost always kicked it inside the 10, which I'd like to see, because our coverage unit isn't exactly uber. I think with a years time off, time to think and work on his game, and if we can bring in a guy who's used to holding left handed, maybe a veteran QB (which we need =/) or someone, who HAS held for a lefty before. I'd like to see this kid again.

I agree with the prediction of OT/MLB/K but am concerned about special teams and a kick returner.  My hope is Jared won't get a franchise tag and they can get a contract settled to minimize the salary cap hit.  Very likely we'll be taking a hit for either Law or Surtain.  Signing Allen puts less money into the cap and guarentees us a DE for some years to come.  Also, it would be foolish not to bring in some talent at the corners.  Even if they are lower rounds who need development.  I prefer the pressure corners who can disrupt routes and allow the offensive line to pressure the QB.  Clearly lots of holes still left to fill.

One of the coaching decisions that I never fully understood last year was the decision to dump Medlock so quickly.  I understand the guy missed his first kick in his first regular game but is that really giving the guy a fair shot?  Was there more to that story that what we saw on the field?  Just curious... Anyway, there's at least a couple of kickers that I'm aware of in the upcoming draft that might be good late-round acquisitions - Art Carmody (Louisville) and Shane Longest (St. Xavier).  NFL Draft Scout currently projects Carmody as a late 6th/ early 7th rounder and Longest as either a 7th rounder or FA.

Redbeard, I didn't say a specific time when I said Allen's outlook has changed since he got off the juice. Jeeze man don't say things just because you assume I meant one thing. Re-read the statement. I said I thought he'd be back next year with us, not traded, and that his outlook has changed. Where did I specify a time and/or year that this happened? So please, Redbeard, take some of your own medicine, and don't say things just because you want to be condescending, actually take time to read and understand the posts.

just as with last years *oh we have so many wideouts idiot thoughts*... this year has as many *oh we have so many o-linemen idiot thoughts*... no we dont it is just that the other poss. are that much more depleated of talent....so draft the o-linemen first dont wait, the starting talent wont be there..... just like last years wideout talent wasnt there in day two... or even in round three... and before another gets on here and quotes a single wideout from the fifth round give us a break and dont comment... he was a lucky pick... same as dont credit Carl for grabbing Allen... in the fourth round... we got lucky with allen...

and xxlp, he was off the so called juice well before last years talk of him wanting more money... jeeze people just dont say things because you have heard it somewhere, please.

ok again MY man #69, who I said should have been paid last year as well as LJ... (to me he is as important), will sit out if he gets tagged. and no that isnt an oppinion its the truth. and they didnt say he was leaving that was assumed by a fan, they could have been talking about Hali... but I hope we dont get long as he isnt that good... Claddy is better suited here.

Jeremy- I wouldn't take your bet if my life depended on it.  If Long is gone, trade down and take Clady.

Just wanted to say, that I don't check the site for one day and the place blows up.  I love it, all these threads are getting me pumped up!  Go Chiefs and Go Arrowheadaddict!!!  By the way, I would be willing to bet 100 dollars that we go O-line with first pick, or trade down and go O-line again.  Any takers?  GO CHIEFS!!!

DE is definietly not a concern THIS year. If we can't get Jared resigned then at least we have him for another year, or if we don't, then we get a 1st and a 3rd for him. Either way, win/win, but I think he'll be back. His outlook has changed since he's been off the juice. But I think our top 3 needs are, OT/MLB/K. Firstly let me say that I know we aren't going to draft a kicker in the first three rounds. But we COULD trade one of our picks for a top-notch kicker from another team. Ok then, you don't need a great QB to win (See 2000 Ravens) but you do need a line to block for the 'so-so' guy you do have, and your running back. Our defense can hold its own, and even a rookie could get done what Napoleon Harris did in the middle last year. We need a leader on the defense, besides Jared. Our defense is awesome if they aren't too tired from being on the field for 59 minutes a game. *sarcasm* But if we are going to settle for these close games, and our offense can still NOT get it in the endzone all the time, we need an accurate kicker to make sure we get points, a la Morten Anderson. I miss that fossilized bastard. He was automatic (inside the 40, anyway) I seriously doubt Carney can stick around another season. And even if he could, he's not as reliable as he once was, and he's never been a Vinitaeri-caliber guy to begin with. Medlock didn't work out, but maybe a year has changed the kid? If not, we need to bring in a veteran, because if we got another rookie kicker and things didn't work out, we'd look like fools, more-so than usual. What do you all think?

I don't get the mocks that think we are going after a DE or a QB high. I don't see it. What I can see is 3 of our first 4 picks being 2 OL (with left tackle in the first round) CB and a value pick in a postion like WR, LB, DT or another OL or CB pic.

I think so, DD. The thing is, Carl has said flat out that he will franchise the One Man Gang if need be. Scouts Inc. just doesn't do its homework.

Okay I guess I'm the stupid one that doesn't bother reading what he writes.  Sentence 7 should have read "Do these guys bother reading what they write?" Heck, maybe I should apply for a job writing copy for Scouts, Inc.!

"don't understand" that is

I see DE frequently listed on various mock drafts as a team need as well. The usual comment that accompanies it is the apparent widespread belief that the Chiefs won't pony up to keep Jared Allen.  I just understand the thinking of these people frankly.  Worst case, who else besides  Allen would the Chiefs use their franchise tag on?  Boomer Grigsby maybe?  I think it's also pretty  funny that Scouts, Inc. lists 5 needs under the heading "three biggest needs." Does these bother reading what write?  And if that's not bad enough, their first comment about the pick is "Quarterback is still a question mark . .  ."  I guess they forgot to put that as #6 on their "three biggest needs" list.   Anyway, I agree, if Jake Long falls into our lap it's pretty much a no brainer unless somebody comes forward with some blockbuster trade deal.  I think it would be more interesting to see what the Chiefs decide to do if he's not there.
