Adam Teicher is Wrong, Well, Partially

AUTHOR: Adam Best | IN: Draft | COMMENTS: 36 Comments

Just listened to the vlog of the Kansas City Star’s Adam Teicher. I really, really had to jump on here and point out that he is dead wrong when he says the Chiefs don’t have a lot to offer an offensive coordinator. Dwayne Bowe. Larry Johnson. Tony Gonzalez. Did he forget about those guys?

Honestly, our situation reminds me a lot of where Cleveland was last year when they brought in Jamal Lewis to supplement Braylon Edwards and Kellen Winslow. The bottom line is that there are very few teams that have a true No. 1 running back, tight end and wide receiver. Hell, some teams don’t even have two of the three (Oakland, for instance, might not have one of the three). Then add in the fifth overall pick. I know we won’t pick Darren McFadden now that Chan Gailey is the guy, but we might have been able to. We’ll end up with a quarterback like Matt Ryan, or a tackle like Jake Long or Ryan Clady. Any of the three would be another strong piece. Also, let’s not forget about Brian Waters.

Additionally, walking into what is traditionally the best homefield advantage in the league is a big draw as well.

I do agree with Teicher’s contention that Herm Edwards might have scared away the top-notch O.C. candidates with his conservatism. Hell, even Mike Huckabee thinks Herm is a little too conservative. Still, since that is the case, Chan might end up being the right Vice Prseident, so to speak.

A young receiver, an old overused running back and an aged tight end? And what’s your beef with this guy? You just refuse to address your QB problem. It doesn’t matter if you have Randy Moss over there. Someone has to be able to throw the ball. Stop playing games and address your QB problem now. Cleo Lemon is better than what you have right now.

  2. thelandryhat says:

I should have finished reading, but every paragraph has a line of BS in it. One huge and key difference between your situation and Cleveland: Braylon and Kellen are young boys. Jamal Lewis is a veteran who could be a leader. He was. Please, redo this post. You’re out of your mind.

  3. xxxlp says:

Well TLH: Tony G still has a couple more years in the league, and him even at 50% of his pass catching ability is still better than 80% of the other pass-catching TE’s in this league.  Larry Johnson was overused THIS year. He’s had half the year off, if that isn’t rested, I don’t know what is.. And yes, D-Bo is a young receiver, who JUST missed 1,000 yards (I’m still pissed about that, 5 freaking yards and they threw it to Jeff Webb 234534 times in that last game? Jesus.) Bowe even outpaced everyone’s surefire pick, Calvin Johnson. And this is with our "very bad QB situation" Look behind our line, even Tom Brady would look like a high schooler tossing the pigskin out there. We hafta see what this kid has got before we just denounce him and throw him out, remember, what was Peyton’s first year like? He threw more picks than TD’s, and their record wasn’t that good. Since then? Much improved. Why? Mostly because his O-line was solidified and most of the pieces stuck together over the years. We need that. Who knows, we may have the next Peyton Manning or the next R. Leaf.

  4. thelandryhat says:

Listen, the author is trying to compare the Chiefs to the Browns of 07 and that’s just silly. The Browns have two young receivers and a young quarterback who actually played real well this year. The Chiefs pretty much had one average receiver and the rest of the team stunk. You need to get rid of Herm. The guy just cannot win.

  5. John says:

TLH – I call shenanigans on you…the Browns did not have a young QB who played really well this year…or at lest they didn’t think they did, because they mortgaged their future to draft Brady Quinn…then they got an amazing surprise from their original young QB but his future is yet to be determined.  He could suck next year and just be a much younger version of Damon Huard…or not, but I would guess that the Browns coaches and front office are not completely sold on Derek Anderson

  6. Adam Teicher continues to prove he is a horrible reporter.  He says Chan is the best choice ONE vlog after saying Herm wanted an "up and coming" OC.  Can he not make any valid points or does he just stay two or three steps behind on principle?

  7. John says:

And to call Dwayne Bowe’s rookie season "average" is clown shoes…effin’ clown shoes.

  8. thelandryhat says:

It was an average season, come on!!!

  9. John says:

yeah…rookie of the week twice and 995 yards, when only like 6 guys in the last 17 years have gone over 1000 in their rookie year…quite average.

  10. xxxlp says:

Average season? Behind our line, with Brodie Croyle, who you dubbed as horrible, throwing to him for the better part of the season, and he still led rookies in recieving yards. Besides TO, who do the Cowboys have that’s anything but average? I would look, but frankly I’m too lazy, haha. Bowe had a breakout season as a rookie, and with a shored up o-line, and a more experienced (and hopefully, better at reading the defensive schemes) Brodie throwing to him, who knows. 1200 yards? I see it as a real possibility.

  11. Adam says:

TLH. you calling Dwayne Bowe average would be like us saying Tony Romo’s girlfriend is just OK looking. As far as Jamal Lewis is concerned, the guy went to prison for drug trafficking. He’s a role model just like Pacman, Tank and Vick are. Tony Gonzalez beat out Kellen Winslow for the Pro Bowl, and Dwayne Bowe smoked Braylon’s rookie season. Doubled his catches, TDs and yards. I might be out of my mind, but I’m still right.

Our offense is better off than Cleveland’s was a year ago, and we still have a chance to draft our Joe Thomas. You can’t even compare Jam to L.J. either. For example, it would be like comparing Crayton to T.O. or Julius to Marion or something along those lines. L.J. is a star. I wouldn’t trade him for any back in the league save maybe L.T., and probably not with his age and mileage. (Purple Jesus is injury prone and struggled mightily at the end of the year, so don’t go there)

Maybe it’s you who needs to redo his comments? Are you just scared that Chan is going to prove Jerry and Troy wrong? That’s it, isn’t it? Yes, Chan can!

  12. Adam says:

And Adam Teicher is giving the rest of us Adams a bad rep. Those podcasts are worthless.

  13. thelandryhat says:

WOAH ADAM!!! First you bash Chan and now you’re making love to him? THis site gets odder and odder. There’s nothing wrong with a little drug traffiking of the greens. I mean come on. This ain’t romper room. Comparing your team to Cleveland was just poor journalism. Now I am going to have to watch you the rest of the year. Oh man.

  14. RTC says:

Good points on the weapons we have (LJ, D-Bo, T-Gon) but you made one error in your post: Mike Huckabee is not conservative (at least in the fiscal sense, which is what most Republicans care about most).

  15. Adam says:

RTC, Thanks. I actually understand that he isn’t fiscally, but to those of us who aren’t card-carrying GOP members he is the most conservative of all the candidates. For instance, he was talking about changing the Constitution to make it more closely align with the Bible this week. Shouldn’t have went there, because I knew I’d get at least one reply like this :)

  16. Adam says:

Should have said more predicatable than a Michael Bay movie or something. Hey, it’s an election year.

  17. Adam says:

TLH, There was some serious sarcasm in there as far as Chan goes. Hope you got that.

I don’t fancy myself as a journalist really either. I went to film school and majored in English and theatre in college, so I didn’t go to J-school. I’m a writer. I’m a storyteller. For better or worse, I have a flair for the dramatic. I don’t sit on the fence, and I’m not afraid of being wrong (you should understand that). I’m a Chiefs fan just like our readers — I owe it to them as a fellow fan to speak the truth and call it like I see it. To say the things nobody else is saying. That’s what I try to do. Fans can get straight news anywhere. We give that to fans as well, but it isn’t our calling card.

Everybody else seemed to think the Cleveland analogy was spot on. Not sure you had NFL Direct Ticket and watched us before L.J. went down (we were 4-3, and in first in the AFC West). We whooped San Diego’s ass out there and were beating Green Bay when he got hurt. In other words, we’re not as bad as you think.

  18. Double D says:

I kind feel the Chiefs are giving Gailey some pretty good weapons for his style of O.  We all know that Chan is primarily known for physical, run-oriented offenses and that will still likely be his primary style however I also have to believe that he will make the most of Gonzo and Bowe because of their own physical, fight-for-the-ball, YAC style of play, especially the YAC element.   He also does not appear to be afraid to run the spread if his experience at G Tech is any indicator.  If he drafts a rookie burner (or two) then I can realistically see him working in some 3-4 receiver sets into mix as long as OL can give Brodie >3  secs to set up the play.   Upgrade the line, put a guy like Owen Schmitt in the backfield, add in a 4.3/4.4 type wideout and you’ve got what I would have to consider a stud offense (at least when Brodie is accurate).

  19. Jon says:

TLH–LJ is not old. And he was not overused this season. Let’s not forget that behind an average offensive line in 2006, this was one of the top 3 RBs in the league. Imagine what he’ll do with an offensive coordinator that actually knows how to run him between the tackles.I don’t know how Gailey will do with Brodie. But there isn’t a shadow of a doubt that if LJ returns at 100%, he’s going to ascend back to being one of the top rushers in the league under Gailey.

  20. ThelandryHat says:

Your cleveland comparison is accepted here because chiefs fans swarm this place, which is a good thing attributable to your keen insight. However, I am just merely pointing out you completely missed the ball on this one. There is only a handful of teams I can think of that succeeded with no QB–the SB winning Ravens and the SB losing Bears come to mind. You’re defense is nowhere near the caliber of those two defenses at that time. With that said, the Chiefs are known for running their backs into the ground. Whether I have effing clown shoes or not, Dwayne Bowe is not a super star. Your QB is awful and I point this out and you just continue to bypass it. So here is my challenge: address your QB problem here during the offseason. Do you support Croyle? Is he the answer? I don’t care how many weapons you have, you need a QB. You want to grab a QB in the first round? Darren McFadden? Wait, I thought you had LJ? 4-3 and first in the AFC West? COME ON!!! Cut that crap out! And Dallas was 13-3! Your QB stinks, which is one reason why Bowe only had 70 catches and 5TDs, other than the fact he isn’t a superstar. He had less TDs than Patrick Crayton. Keep that in mind. I wil be back to answer any criticism, because I know you guys have gone through a lot as Chiefs fans. I know. I understand. I am not even sure what brought me here, but that Cleveland analogy had to, it HAD TO BE, countered. That was such crafty bull crap.

  21. xxxlp says:

Our QB stinks? I’d have to say that even your beloved Romo would suffer behind our line. You guys have an excellent line, two thousand yard backs, easily, (although I think Marion the Barbarian should be starting) A pro bowl TE, one of the best WR’s in the game, a fullback who can actually block a bit. and Romo. and you… choked in the playoffs, to the Giants, who you beat twice in the regular season. Choke much? We have a POSSIBLE future pro-bowler at WR, a future hall of famer at TE, and we have a great RB, ONE of them. But behind our line, our RB looks worse, our QB looks worse, everyone looks worse. You give us Flozell Adams at left tackle.. And watch how much better the Chiefs ‘O’ suddenly gets. Wouldn’t even be close. Svitek and McIntosh looked like little girls blocking out there on the left side.

  22. Adam says:

TLH, I still don’t understand. I wouldn’t trade our three for Clevelands three (RB, TE, WR). I wouldn’t trade our three for very many in the league. Maybe not even Dallas’. Honestly, T.O. is obviously better than D-Bo right now, but I would take L.J. and Tony G. over Marion and Witten any day of the week. Tony. G beat Witten in catches and yards, despite not having a Pro Bowl QB. And I’m not even going to consider comparing Marion to L.J. at this juncture.

As for the talking about our QB situation, I like Brodie’s potential, but because of his health and struggles I have indeed called for a change. Go read Brodie Croyle: The Absentee

Honestly, Croyle hasn’t even earned the right to call himself
Quarterback 1A at this point. If it were up to me and a lot of other
Chiefs fans, he’d be lucky to be Quarterback 1B for the Chiefs when
training camp rolls around. If success is 80% dependent on just showing
up, Croyle only has about a 20% chance of succeeding, giving the Chiefs
roughly the same odds given the importance of the position.

Personally, I don’t like those odds. Not one bit. That’s why the
campaign for the Chiefs to bring in another quality option at
quarterback this offseason starts right here at Arrowhead Addict, right
    now.

  23. John says:

Dwayne Bowe is not a super star yet (but at least he never fake cried for Croyle this season).  And yes, Crayton had 2 more TD’s than Bowe, but was behind him in every other category – 50 catches (Bowe had 70), 697 yards (995), a whopping 46.5 yds/game (Bowe averaged 62.2) and most importantly, Crayton ranked 35th in catches among NFC recievers and Bowe was 14th among AFC recievers (Bowe 29th, Crayton 62nd among all NFL WR’s)…oh and Crayton is 28 years old and Bowe is 23…in 5 years Bowe’s stats will annihilate Crayton’s 2007 stats.  Finally, we did have problems at QB, but 70 catches is not shabby…after all Plaxico Burress had 70 catches too, and I don’t think any giants fans are saying "But if we had a better QB he would have caught more!"  (Actually, other than fewer TD’s (which is our offenses fault, not Bowe’s – he caught almost everything thrown to him), Bowe posted stats which were very close to Plaxico.

  24. Double D says:

TLH – I’d say a lot of Chiefs fan would be okay (myself included) with drafting a guy like Matt Ryan but essentially it become a moot point of discussion for us because ownership, management, and the coach are all saying the same thing – that Croyle did not have a fair shot at proving himself and that they don’t see a franchise-type QB coming up in this draft.   I guess I understand both sides of the argument but I think we all (Chiefs Nation) in varying degrees have more or less resigned ourselves to the fact that we will not be in the Super Bowl next year but that we do expect to see a much improved team in ‘08, particularly on offense.  I’m not a Croyle believer but I do believe that he can be of help towards the long-term goal.  If he can’t hack that role, then I guess we’ll have our shot at Tebow or Daniels in ‘09.   And maybe that is the plan?!

  25. Adam says:

John, well said! Bowe made some endzone catches that I still can’t believe, i.e. Chicago, Detroit, Indy and Minnesota. And he ripped out San Diego’s heart with his big catch out there. Also, everybody keep in mind that Bowe was rolling with Damon as quarterback. I believe Damon actually threw four of the five TDs to him, every one but the Indy one.

And XXXLP, great points on Flozell and our line. Dame and Svitek did look like little girls at times, but so did Flozell against Osi. That guy was just straight killing him. I really do think there’s no match one on one for a dominant defensive end. That’s why you have to have good blocking fullbacks (T-Rich) and tight ends (JasonDunn, formerly) to help double.

  26. Adam says:

Double D, after Clark said he plans to build primarily through the draft, I no longer expect us to draft a QB in the first two rounds. He did say older vets, however, so we could very well sign some young FAs. He kind of wants to build a young, non-Vermeilian squad.

  27. xxxlp says:

And the Browns analogy is accepted, because it is mostly right? Look at their offense a year ago. They had Braylon, they had KW2 (for some of the year) They had Jurevicious, they had Derek Anderson starting at the end of the year. They had their pieces. But their offense stunk, they lost alot, and they eventually got the 6th pick in the draft. Who’d they nab first? Joe Thomas. Later in the first, traded up, and who’d they get? Brady Quinn. Look at their offense now? They upgraded one of the most important positions on the field at LT, gave their QB some competition, grabbed a free agent to help their offense along (Jamal Lewis) and look at them now. Top 10 offense. From something like 31st the year before (too lazy to look it up and make sure, but I believe they were that low.) They have a similar team to ours. One young up and coming receiver (Braylon and D-Bo) and a veteran 2nd option who can still get it done (Jurevicious and Kennison) while packing a great pass catching TE (Winslow and T-Gonz) a veteran running back with gas in the tank left (JL and LJ) The browns O-line was similar to ours, the guards are better than the tackles, and they have a nice center in LeCharles. They fixed the tackle spots and look where they are. The only position the Browns are better at is QB, but surprise surprise, Derek Anderson was running for his life last year behind his patchwork O-line, and noone had any confidence in him. You give him an O-line and suddenly he has a higher passer rating than Peyton for 4 weeks straight? That’s not supposed to happen *gasp*. An o-line changes everything TLH, you guys still have one over there in Dallas. We got spoiled with Willie and Will and Brian, Casey, and we thought they’d last forever. We’re paying for that now, but we’ll be back.

  28. Adam says:

Well said, XXXLP. Couldn’t of put it any better myself.

Of course, if Cleveland fans would have compared themselves to the Saints a year ago, all outsiders would have called them crazy, too. Most fans and media don’t see enough of every team. Thanks to Direct Ticket and fantasy football, I’m pretty sure Zach and I did. I watched Cleveland play a ton this year because I owned Kellen Winslow. We can accomplish what they did. They also benefitted, like the Saints of ‘06, from a weak schedule. Other than the Pats and Chargers, that’s what we got next year.

  29. Double D says:

Adam – yeah, he seemed to come down pretty hard on the decisions made during the Vermeil era didn’t he? Could just be more scapegoating though . . .

  30. Adam says:

No, I agree. Carl and Lamar gave Dick carte blanche to get him, and it set us back. Not really two years ago, when we still had a lot of his talent, but starting with last year.

  31. redbeard says:

Adam …lol I think tonys girlfriend has a big ass mouth, eyes way to big and spread apart on her head… not the girl I would want… all she has is tits…lolshe is way over rated…

  32. redbeard says:

I wouldnt compoare the chiefs to cleveland either but , at least I understood your point.

  33. redbeard says:

The chiefs need the o-line imeadiatly, or what years of stars on this team will also be gone and Carl will leave this team as he got it… on the bottom.

  34. redbeard says:

addressing QB… give me a break, on the few (maybe four times he had time ) in the pocket he did ok… the same things people are saying about the QB, is the same thing I say about the wideouts and the RBs… it will all change when we have a o-line worth a catfish frys worth

  35. redbeard says:

the offense will be ok and in the top ten if and only if we draft two linemen with the first two picks… one tackle and one guard. and Claddy would be IDEAL with this line… next to Watters who is also a bruiser style lineman …that would be a great pairing. We also need a Line backer, above the corner spot… as with the cover two we have one more year. dont waiste a late second day pick on one, wait till next year and draft a day one corner then… we need a top flight line backer or another wideout more than QB or Corner.

  36. Paradise says:

No one even mentioned how much a new o-coordinator set us back this year!  Landry Hat…you’ve got to be kidding me!  You chew out Adam for comparing us to the browns of 07?  How do the Chiefs not have more promise than the browns did in 06?  I understand that you’re frustrated, depressed, and enraged…but don’t deflect your criticism toward Adam.  You should be chewing out Wade, Jessica, or Romo’s RIDICULOUS contract!!!  A-Rod thinks that Romo needs to earn his money when it counts!
