Chan Gailey: What a Nightmare That Would Be

Yikes, I just read that the Chiefs interviewed recently fired Georgia Tech head coach Chan Gailey for the second time. Argh. Out of the four current offensive coordinator candidates we keep hearing about — Eric Price, Gailey, Jim Fassel and Mike Shula — I think Gailey would be the absolute worst choice.

In fairness, all I know about Gailey is that he got fired by Jerry Jones, spearheaded a dismal Miami Dolphins offense and lost to Georgia while at GT six years in a row. Wait a minute…

See what I’m saying? This is not the guy for us. When I said no retreads, I should have also said no retards. Please, please, please, PUH-LEASE don’t do this Bill Kuharich, Carl Peterson, Herm Edwards and Ray Farmer. That is, unless you want all of us bloggers and the mainstream media to keep bagging on you for a couple more years. Or until you all get fired for hiring a chump like Gailey.

Hopefully, Price or Shula, or even Fassel, will get the job by the end of the week and this nightmare will end.

(by the way, Lunesta is a prescription sleep aid… zzzzzzzzzzzzzzz)

please remember that wiegman may decide to retire this year. if they dont draft a top flight o-lineman he just might decide to retire.

and without two extreamly better o-linemen this year a new coach wont be the answer but will allow new scapegoats

as long as the improvement isnt the same as the improvement we saw from black to upgradeing big mac... on th o-line... wasnt really noticed by me at all

Larry, I used to live in Miami, butthe problem is the game is here. We don't know when, but we know who we are playing and where. The closest to MIA will be Atlanta or Charlotte, and neither are that close at all, really.Webby, Jimmy Legs?

All things considered, I like the move.  Yeah, we could gotten some younger OC's, but this move establishes some foundation with youth.  Rather than bringing in an OC who has coached QB's, this move develops the whole offense and takens pressure off of Brodie.  I'll still to the same old broken record though;  Without an offensive line, the buzz of discussion with this hire becomes mute.  One more thing, in looking at the "off-season" dates that were posted, when does the NFL finalize the '08 schedule?  I'm looking to head back to the Miami game next year.  anybody?

At least we don't have to worry about the Jimmy Legs :(

I wouldn't go so far as to say those offenses he led were abyssmal. His offenses have always been top 15 and hovering around or in the top 10. I was surprised myself until I checked it out on pro football reference. That should hopefully reassure you a bit. Like his offense or not, but Gailey's offense has won on the pro level time and time again. He's never coordinated/coached an NFL team that went under .500. In fact, his teams have almost always won 10 or more games. The guy knows how to win. And he's won on the playoff level too, even if only as a coordinator. So yeah, I'd be careful not to confuse "unexciting" with "unproductive." His offenses are a snoozing, run-happy offense, but he knows how to coach and his offense wins games... at least on the NFL level.

At first I thought Gailey was a horrible choice, like most fans/bloggers.  But now that I think about it, considering what we had in Solari, Gailey will be a HUGE upgrade.  He has had successful offenses as coordinator, even a superbowl offense.

The Cherm Era -- I like that. Guess we have no choice but to give it a shot.

I hate to say it but none of these coaches are worth a crap!   PERIOD !!!!!

I as well would have liked to see a Norm Chow or that type of coach, wearing red on Sundays. But guys give a lil credit to Chan Gailey. He coached for 14 years in the NFL, and out of the 14, went to the playoffs 11 times. His quarterbacks have finished with pretty good touchdown/interception ratio's, he's had top 10 offenses many times, and he also allows the running game to blossom. I've heard some things about a zone-blocking scheme. And while I don't necessarily agree with it, I'm not gonna knock it until we try it. I mean Denver's doing ok with it, and we have a better starter than them at RB. Who knows, could make all the difference in the world. Let's give Chan a chance.

Thanks, Adam, for really pumping us up for the inevitable!  Let the CHERM era begin...yawn.

Breaking News:  Chan Gailey is the Chief's new OC.

Whoa!  Here's a little slice of Gailey's resume to chew on:While member of Denver's coaching staff: 3 Super Bowls As Pittsburgh OC (96-97): 2 Division crowns, AFC Champion (i.e., in the Super Bowl) . '96 Season, #2 in rushing. As Dallas HC (98-99): 2 playoffs, 1 Division Crown. Both yrs top 5 in fewest turnovers and fewest interceptions. 1998 - #1 in both categories. As Miami OC (00-01): 2 playoffs, Division Crown in '00, tied NE at 11-5 in '01 (lost tie breaker for division crown).  At Miami, achieved NFL #8 ranking in total offense.  And who was on that offense? Jay Fiedler at QB, Lamar Smith at RB, plus Orande Gadsen and James McKnight as receivers. Quite a stellar lineup there, huh?  Damon Huard was the backup fwiw.I, for one, have no problem mind handing him the keys to LJ, TG, DB, and a yet-to-be-named wideout behind a what we all hope will be an improved OL and see where he can take  it.

Adam, that was a great post!  I needed a laugh like that.  I read also that Denver is looking to interview Chan Gailey and he just canceled his interview with the Rams (per KFFL.com).  Sounds like the Chiefs, who interveiwed him twice now have a new Offensive (truly offensive!) coordinator.  In my opinion, Chan is an upgrade over Solari, but not by much.  Did you really think for one moment that Herm wanted anything else than a lunesta offesive coordinator.  Run, Run, Run.  Kick the FG, and keep it close.   Yawn!!!!!!  GO CHIEFS

I don't know too much about Norm Chow...but would he be a possibility?  It seems like he had success with quarterback development in the past, and we definitely need that!
