Dwayne Bowe was ranked the third best offensive rookie by Sports Illustrated, behind only Joe Thomas and Purple Jesus.
The real story here, though, is the list serving as a reminder that you can find top-notch offensive line talent after the first round. Guard Aaron Sears (round two, pick 35; Tampa Bay), center Samson Satele (round two, pick 60; Miami) and tackle Tony Ugoh (round two, pick 42; Indianapolis) — also known as Redbeard’s personal salvation project — all made the list. Marshal Yanda, who started 12 games for the Ravens, was not listed, but he was picked in the third round.
The point is that the Chiefs don’t have to pick a tackle in the first round, especially with this year’s great free agent crop of O-lineman.

Ugoh was a first rounder eccept he was drafted round two… this year. lol. What we wish and ecspect is for the team to draft top talent in a year when they have no great talent…and that is the reason for drafting two linemen in the first two rounds… long isnt the answer people… he is very over rated as a left tackle… (if the chiefs would have drafted linmene the last three years we wouldnt have all this trouble now.) this year I see three poss. o-linemen who get drafted first round… as for the players coming from later rounds… they have maybe four centers first day picks and a couple of guards… this years draft couldnt have been worse for the chiefs and in what they need… I actually see the Chiefs drafting a wideout with the fifth pick.
and your point is correct but you left out that, this years draft class for linemen sucks…lol
oh and name the last DRAFTED lineman on the off. side by the Chiefs…
It is very possible to get good O-lineman after the first round. The exception is at Left Tackle. How many pro-bowl level LT’s were drafted outside of the first round? Not many. Hence, I would still go LT in the first round and look to pick up guards and centers later on.
and as you have stated the chiefs could have drafted any of the mentioned players and yet again failed to help our team instead giving in to ticket buyers ignorance of bowe taking the team to a superbowl or something close to it… lets see what did bowe do … basically he opened it up for gonzo…
shields came from later rounds… I mention the wide out because they have only a few worth drafting…and I really dont like jake long as I see him way to slow to be the left tackle we need… I would draft him only to play right tackle, assuming they get a left tackle but from what I hear the team still likes big mac…lol
I heard that Mac is getting moved to RT for sure, and Waters to center. I like Long, he could be this year’s Thomas. But I’m starting to think more and more that if Run DMC is on the board, we’d be stupid not to either make a blockbuster trade or draft him. There’s about one guy like him (if that) every year (Bush, Peterson, etc…), and that’s in good years…
As for D-Bo, what did he do? Let’s see, he put up basically 1,000 yards on 70 catches in the league’s worst offense as a rookie (especially after L.J. went down). And he was equally effective with both QBs, a rarity, especially for a rookie. If it wasn’t for Adrian Peterson, he might have been Offensive Rook of the Year. No way we take that pick back. The pick we should be regretting is Tank Tyler, not Bowe. D-Bo is a star in the making, a future perennial Pro Bowler.
Well, if we didn’t go D-Bo last year and Tamba the year before we’d be bitching about a WR and someone to help Jared rush the passer. It takes time to fill all the holes. We’re getting closer. In D-Bo, D.J., Jared, Larry and Tamba we have a great young base, and Tony G, Waters and the vets still have gas (not the two corners, though).
Olineman are by all accounts the "safest" pick(s) to make in the NFL draft. It’s hard to project RB’s and WR, QB (skill postition players) into NFL. While I agree, lineman can be found later in the draft-Will Shields 3rd rounder I believe, the Chiefs have shown an inability to do so. The Chiefs need to build this team around LJ and Brodie. You do that by protecting Brodie and opening holes for LJ. LT in the first, RG in the Second, blocking FB in the Third and leave Brian Waters where he is for Pete’s Sake! He’s a pro bowl LG for the love of all that’s right!
I think our safest bet is to trade down and pick OT Cherilous out of BC. BC is known to be a O-line factory. I watched this kid in their bowl game and he was spectacular. Also has the intangibles. He was on the sideline in his team faces talking them up, being a sideline leader as well as on the field. We trade down we can pick up extra first day picks, maybe get 5 out of the top 75 players this year. Spend a couple first day picks on CB’s , and even more depth at O-line and D-line. We also should look at a returner/WR. We need some speed there. That kid Eddie Royal outta Va.Tech could be had late first day. So much to fix!!
Redbeard. To answer guestion. Last OL drafted? Herb Taylor, OT/OG, 2007. Tek.
ok first adam yes bowe did catch the ball but remember back to the loosing days of throwing the ball left and right to marshal and carson…hmmm that got us nothing.!!!! and second steven no way is left tackle or any o-line posss. a safe pick…for crying out loud…. saftey is the easiest pick…. and then linebacker… watters isnt switching we have a back up center…now and he isnt that bad from what we have seen, while he was playing right tackle this year. and people should see that with a second running back here in kc we’ll have two backs who wont get any yards…it isnt like LJ was tired so he couldnt run the ball…it was because we dont have a o-line.
I understand people not wanting to reach for a player… and wanting to draft fadden… but it doesnt make sinse to have three backs right now… we saw the last part of the season that holmes and smith both ran the ball at least as well as did LJ… drafting another back wont make anything better and will extend the mediocracy of our team farther…. we cant waiste a first pick again on the d-line,or QB, or safety, or cornerback, or RB.
Redbeard, you know I love you but trying to bash on D-Bowe gets you no where in my book. He easily was the best offensive rookie skill player in the AFC, HANDS DOWN! People might even think that he is better than suppose-to-be superstar Calvin Johnson.
Please stop bashing on D-BOWE! We got the STEAL of the first round and we would have won maybe 1 game if we didnt have him!
not bashing bowe but …with the thinking of drafting all the key poss.. star players …we will become another arizona… thats my point
and I agree he is better
but as I said before last years draft, and saw people start to agree with me on …is our o-line…and without drafting top players for this purpose the other talent is basicaly a waiste…, see it isnt just bowe… it is the propensity of the chiefs to draft to fill the seats
I have heard multiple times that Waters is switching.
As for Bowe, yeah, you can use Arizona as an example. You could also use the old St. Louis teams, Seattle, New York, Green Bay, Dallas, Pittsburgh, etc… as examples. Even Cincinatti made the playoffs recently. Receivers aren’t just for stats. How many teams have won Super Bowls without top-notch receivers recently? Hell, half the time the even win MVP (Branch, Rice, Ward, etc…).
And 65 Toss Power Trap, yes, we have some hole to fill. But we have a lot of things in place. Personally, I’d only trade places with about tenteams in the league, and maybe not even that afte we draft fifth and 36th, plus free agency. We’re on the right track. We weren’t as bad as we were this year, or as good as we were the year before. Should have been about .500 both seasons.
the team is in the right direction… but with age at center, guards and no left tackle… or right for that matter… and as for wideouts yes they need one,…. but those other teams had more than one, and a better o-line
it starts in the trenches… always has and always will.
Thats why we are going to do a complete overhaul this offseason on that unit. Thats also why we have drafted DL the last few years in the draft because "it starts in the trenches" on both sides of the football.
We lost 2 pro-bowlers on OL the last 2 seasons before this one. Its not like we can go out and get any probowl OL we want. It takes time to rebuild. We also had one of the best OL for 5 years in the league. I believe in the Chiefs and believe that this OL will be rebuilt this offseason.
I think its time to take a q from baseball and look at Asians.. Lets get some huge sumos from Japan
If there is one thing that Carl Peterson has done right (gulp) up to this point…it is keeping the offensive line solid. I believe that with Herm’s philosophy and our historical commitment to strong o-line play, we’ll be back with a solid one in the next couple years!
Is there still any possibility of Alan Faneca wearing red?
Purple Jesus….that’s classic!!!!!
zach your right about not getting any ole lineman and make him a probowler…but drafting a sixth rounder last year and none the two years before…give us a break. We had a few great corners and what we heard when they left was we were spoiled by them …lol and we still dont have great corners… now we will be hearing for the next six years how we are spoiled with o-linemen…hahaha what a joke there… I have just heard all that before… and it sounds like carl speaking… if they dont address the issue it wont change.PERIOD.
