I know Herm Edwards and King Carl are doing everything they can to avoid looking at a first-round quarterback, but here’s a guy I feel we have to at least look at with a top five pick. Matt Ryan had a great year leading Boston College to 11 wins, a rarity in college football for any program. Watching him play, he really reminds me of Ben Roethlisberger. Maybe it’s just me, though? Judge for yourself…

What does everybody else think about the possibility, even if it is a remote one, of the Chiefs drafting Ryan?

Back to Square One…if the Chiefs go QB with the 4th or 5th pick, then it’s another losing season, and everyone will be calling for Herm’s head to roll. By all accounts, Croyle has the arm and the head to be an NFL QB. Give him an OLine and let’s find out. Jake Long or whoever they feel is the #1 rated LT coming out this year is the way to go.
Thats the issue, Jake Long most likely wont be there when we pick. So thats the real question, Do we reach and take an OT? or Take the best QB in the draft? or take the best player available?
Correct, that is why we’re taking a look at guys like Ryan and Jenkins. And if the Chiefs bet solely on Croyle next year and don’t at least bring in a trustworthy vet, Herm is in deep , deep trouble. No way that guy plays in 16 games.
While I think you guys make very good points and can agree somewhat on the reach for a LT. 2 pts. I would like to state. 1st. I am not all that certain that Long will be gone by the time the Chiefs pick at either 4 or 5. Every team above the Chiefs have bigger needs at D, except for the Raiders(who in the hell really knows which way they go) and Atlanta. The Falcons will probably take a QB here or McFaddden. 2nd. I don’t think that Ryan Clady, OT, Boise State, is that much of a reach. There are many out that think(I am one of them) Clady could be the better prospect, a pure LT, while some see Long as a LT. Just another opinion. Tek.
I think Croyle might play in all 16 games, but not for the entire game
I like the idea of taking a QB, but not with that early of a pick. Success at QB is not guaranteed at a high draft area (see Tom Brady). The CB from O-State looks cool, but dude… we’ve been clamoring for an offensive lineman the entire season. To drop this now… I dunno…
Tom Brady is the exception, not the rule. But I agree; It is risky to take a quarterback there, especially if you don’t give him the time to develop properly. Personally, I hope McFadden falls to five like Peterson did a year ago, and that we are able to trade back.
Sorry guys. Meant Long as RT more than a LT. My bad. Tek
If we are going to take a QB in the 1st I’d rather it be Woodson. But if we are going to take a QB at all I’d rather it be Joe Flacco in the 3rd. I personally believe Brohm and Ryan have been severely overvalued.
I need to really take a look at Woodson and Joe Flaco as well. I’m starting to think we need a David Garrad-type guy to move the chains with a short-to-intermediate passing game and his legs, and not turn it over. I think we need to take a long, hard look at the Jags. I’d like to see us have that kind of football team, and it fits his persona. Maybe hiring Shula would be the first step? Kinda changing my tune about that Jacksonville offensive staff after yesterday.
What I like most about Ryan is that he almost single-handedly carried BC this year. He reminds a little of John Elway in that respect and if ever the Chiefs needed a John Elway-esque QB to single-handedly win games, it would be now. I would love to see what he could do with NFL-caliber receivers and a running game. I don’t realistically see the Chiefs being a championship-level team next year so taking on Ryan as part of an overall 2-3 year rebuilding scheme is okay with me. That said, Herm and Carl have pretty much slammed the door shut on the notion of drafting a QB in the 1st round so I guess it’s a moot point.
good comments by all. I am a believer in the trenches and believe if we are too build a franchise around any QB (Croyle or otherwise), we need to build upon our line play. Far too many young QBs in this league have developed "happy feet" as a result of poor line play. Too much was placed on Brodie this year in terms of having to throw the ball and play catch up. The Chiefs need clock managment through the running game to allow a 4th qtr defensive stand. That was sorely missed this year. Herm wants to play games close and Defense was on the field far too long in too many games. Brokie will come along fine and Thigpin has shown signs as well. Go with the line in that first pick!!!!
