ChiefStock: Malcolm Jenkins

by Draft

You know what, if the Chiefs do end up cutting both Pat Surtain and Ty Law, then cornerback would be our biggest need. If Jake Long is off the board and we stay the course and avoid looking at any quarterback there, is it crazy to take a long look at Ohio State corner Malcolm Jenkins? Wouldn’t the best corner in the draft (Scouts Inc. rates him as a 95) probably be better than reaching on an offensive tackle?

The Dallas Cowboys picked Terrence Newman this early years ago, and that move has really paid off in Dallas. Jenkins is a lot like Newman: A.) He did well in the classroom; B.) He ran track; and C.) He seems to have his head on straight. I did read something about him being involved in the OSU-Illini scuffle, so I’ll read into that. This will probably never happen because of Herm Edwards‘ beloved Tampa Two, but he’s a heck of a player. This video is from his sophomore year…

What does everybody else think about drafting Malcolm Jenkins with our first-round pick?

I am not a fan of picking up McFadden even though I know he has talent.  Let someone trade spots and give us their #1 next year as well (or their #2 pick this year).  If we can't get a starting offensive lineman at #5 (whomever that is), then go after a corner.  I agree to cutting loose Ty Law but because of the long term contract with Surtain, we'll have him for a few more years otherwise we take a major hit against the salary cap.  The #5 pick is going to come with a major contract and absolutely must come in and be able to start AND contribute immediately which means be in camp!!!

Well, if you are implying trading L.J. it's really not reasonable given the salary cap and his value coming off an injury. If McFadden is there when we pick, I say we either have to pick him or trade for a helluva deal. McFadden would help keep L.J. fresh and give our offense another dimension. Some of the better teams in the league (NYG, DAL, MIN, WAS, JAC, NE, NO, SD, etc...) use two backs, and often. If there is a player in this draft than can Reggie Bush a defense and make the line look better it is McFadden.

why not maccfadden... as I see it the chiefs can trade a running back for a left tackle... easier than drafting a left tackle

I think when you go 4-12 you draft the best player available.  Yes it would be nice if that player is Jake Long, but if he is off the board then you take best player available (short of McFadden).

Good thoughts, Buster. We will definitely be taking looks at all three of the players you mentioned, actually four (Ellis), with future ChiefStock pieces.

I have been thinking along the same lines. This could be a good fit despite the cover2 and there is another Jenkins(Mike) who would probably fit better. They play the cover 2 at South Florida.  However, #5 would be a bit high for him(maybe both). I also think that if Long is gone(and I am not sure he will be) then Ryan Clady(while a slight reach) OT, Boise State would be a great fit and he is an LT, while there is some question whether Long is a better fit at RT. Clady could be the better prospect not too soon down the road and he is younger and bigger. If there isn't a OT there that the Chiefs want I would think 2 options might be better for them. Take the Best DB available or go for Sedrick Ellis, DT, USC. DT still a need.  I kind of like him better than Dorsey. A bit undersized(6-1) but a force in the middle.Of course the best option might be to trade down a few and pick the best available at a need position and have another pick later(2nd or 3rd).Tek
