Update: From ESPN…
The Falcons, Chiefs and Raiders all had the same strength of schedule — they played teams that finished with a winning percentage of .516 compared to .523 for Jets’ opponents.
Because the Chiefs finished third in the AFC West with a better record in common games over the Raiders, Oakland will draft ahead of them.
So the Falcons and Raiders will flip a coin for the third spot. If Atlanta wins, it will pick third followed by Oakland and Kansas City. If Oakland wins the toss, then the Chiefs and Falcons will flip for the fourth spot.
F***! The Chiefs went from Jake Long to Chris Long territory because we lost the tie-breakers to the Falcons and Raiders (division record and common opponents record, respectively). With no real shot at Jake Long or trading back with a Darren McFadden suitor, what the hell are we going to do with the fifth overall pick? I still say we trade back and stockpile picks. We can get a tackle later in the first, and I have a feeling that one of those four quarterbacks will still be there at No. 36 (Colt Brennan?) I’m currently reading that none of the QBs are worth a top ten pick, but it is still early.

What do you think we’ll do with the fifth overall pick in April’s 2008 NFL Draft?

Don’t worry…there is still hope. There is always some player that comes out of no where and has an unbelievable 40 time at the combine or an unbelievable senior bowl that rockets up the draft baord. All it will take is one of those players that some other team just "has to have" that will allow the Chiefs to get one of the two Long’s. A team in the 8-12 slot will move up with st. louis or atlanta to obtain such a player, leaving the Chiefs with a legit shot at aquiring the services of Jake Long or Chris Long. Come on, I have to take something positive away from the season don’t I?
Actually…you only use the tiebreakers if you’re within the same conference as a team. Therefore, Atlanta and the Raiders need to flip for it.<p>And since the Chiefs cannot draft before the Raiders (common games record), our spot is dependent on who wins the coin flip. We’re looking at either 4th or 5th.
I hope I’m right at least.
Can’t believe this even made it on here yet. NO we do not have the 5th pick. It is a tie for 3,4, and 5. There is going to be a coin flip on a later day. AJC has just posted an corrected story.
I beleive we use that first pick to get a franchise left tackle and start rebuilding that offensive line. Whether its at 3rd, 4th or 5th pick, Brodie will develop a bad case of happy feet if we don’t start getting him better protection and LJ (love him or hate him) needs better blocking to open up the run game. I don’t know who is out there, but should consider a tackle from a cold weather college and build for December and January games.
If we trade back we can still get OT Clady from Boise St or OT Baker from USC. Both of these guys will be around bewtween 7-12 picks and at least one of them will be there.
I hate to tell everyone, but the Rams will not let Jake Long slip past them.
We lost the tie breaker w/Oakland but not ATL. If Oakland wins the coin flip with ATL then we have a coing flip with ATL for the 4th pick. If ATL wins the coin flip with Oakland then we will have the 5th pick. I personally hope we can trade down and get some extra picks.
If we pick at the 5th spot we might as well because Jake Long will be gone. Although at the 4th spot long shouldn’t be there either.
The 5 spot is an interesting place to be. I would be looking at grabbing Jake Long, if he falls. If not, I want to trade down. However, I do not want to lose out on drafting a franchise LT.
Clady is the Chiefs best pick and he is climbing up the rankings fast. Is there a way to trade back a few spots and will Clady still be there if we do? I am all for trading down as long as we can get at least a mid 1st round pick back on top of other picks.
Mike, right now I am leaning towards Clady myself. I don’t think we will be able to tell if, and how much we can move back and still get him until we get a week or less from the draft. Too much changes from now to then.
I agree we won’t know until draft is close. Clady may climb so much we will have to take him where we are at or he could fall if he has does bad at combines.
Well if the Cowboys are in fact obsessed with McFadden I would take their two late 1st rounders. You’ll still have Chris Williams OT Vandy, Michael Oher OT Ole Miss, and Anthony Collins OT KU available. I say this based on my belief Oher and Collins will declare. But yes I would love to see the Chiefs trade back to say 10th pick area (for Clady) and pick up a 2nd as well.
Derrick: I see where you are coming from. However, I wouldn’t want to drop down too far. To me, left tackle is such an important position, I wouldn’t trade a stud for a good player there. If I can trade down and still get a stud LT, I do it. If not, I stay at #5.
Hey Derrick, if the Cowboys trade with us they would have to trade their two 1st round picks and a 2nd for it to be even on the draft value chart.
