Stray Arrows: The Law/Surtain Debate
Some interesting stuff Zach dug up on the Chiefs cap situation…
Kansas City Chiefs projected 2008 salary cap: $91.657
Possible cap casualties:
Greg Wesley: Salary – 2.800, Cap – 4.067, Running Bonus – 400,000
Eddie Kennison: Salary – 2.500, Cap – 4.033, Running Bonus – 1,000,000
Kendrell Bell: Salary – 3.250, Cap – 4.650, Running Bonus – 0
Ty Law: Salary – 6.500, Cap – 7.550, Running Bonus – 0
Patrick Surtain: Salary – 5.650, Cap – 8.400, Running Bonus – 350,000
We believe that we only get the savings of their salaries, not their cap number. So, it actually looks like we would save more by cutting Law than Surtain, because he does not have a running bonus.
I think we should probably cut both, but if it came down to either Law or Surtain, I’d definitely keep Law. The guys at Football Outsiders show just how bad Surtain’s been this year, revealing that he allows 9.3 yards per pass, seventh worst among all defensive backs. That article also shows that Asante Samuel is the free agent cornerback to target, but we’ll tackle that on another day.

Surtain is gone for sure though. Don’t see how he could keep his job. Hopefully, we might cut both and get a bunch of cap room even with the Jared Allen signing.
December 26th, 2007 at 4:07 pmKennison is the least likely to go, I believe.
December 26th, 2007 at 4:09 pmI think all of those players above should go. We don’t need their services. I love Eddie and think he is a great guy, but I think it is time to move on.
December 26th, 2007 at 4:11 pmBell & Surtain – good as goneWesley – could go either wayKennison & Law – keep, even though Law is pretty expensive. How could we find 2 new starting corners in the same year when O-line needs to be the priority in the draft and free agency. Asante Samuel is probably too expensive, an remember, a player has to WANT to come to Kansas City.
December 26th, 2007 at 4:43 pmTime to clean house!! All of them should go. When your record is as bad as ours, we need to clean house. Do you really think that any of these guys has anything left? They have old legs!
December 26th, 2007 at 4:48 pmWith the salary cap, it’s so hard to evaulate how to manage when to let older players go. The players I see as locks to be gone are Bell and Reed. Also, I can’t see keeping both Law and Surtain. I have been playing with ideas in my head. If Adam and Zac allow me, I may have something for everyone to shoot at soon.
December 26th, 2007 at 6:11 pmI hope we get rid of them all. But remember we have about 5 years till we will reach the playoffs again. And that is if we get rid of mike solari , and that stupid idiot from new york

December 27th, 2007 at 8:21 amZach, that’s very interesting. Do you know if the "running bonus" refers to the cap hit we would take on for cutting any of these players early? Because if that’s true, shouldn’t that number also include prorated signing bonus money? I would imagine that if Law has about a $1 million difference between his salary and his actual cap hit that that $1 million represents the 2008 portion of the prorated signing bonus? These numbers seem to get more complicated every day but I do think it’s fascinating to figure out how much we can save by cutting players. I’m also curious about how Priest Holmes and company affect our payroll for next year.
December 27th, 2007 at 2:16 pmJon, the running bonus is for that season, so we would definitely get hit with that. I would also believe that we would get hit with a prorated amount of their signing bonus depending on how much is still owed.
NFL numbers are very complicated and teams also give out limited information about their contracts. As we all know King Carl loves keeping his contracts a secret.
Priest Holmes retiring I think will not hurt our cap for the next season. The only thing that could hurt our cap I believe would be a bonus, but I would like to find out more about this.
December 27th, 2007 at 2:50 pmZach your correct on holmes… as he was and has been on our cap room…sense he first arrived here in KC, although the league allows his time off as a different $ figuring into the cap… now that he has retired , that doesnt change anything… cap is still cap.
