While there are many things that have gone wrong this season (and many to blame for the downfall), the biggest disappointment seems to be the playcalling, especially on 3rd down. Often times, we see calls during these points of the game that are not only questionable, but utterly unbelievable. I evaluated each game this afternoon (while I was supposed to be studying) and found some pretty interesting things that seem to happen on a regular basis:

Some observations:
- As you can see, we’re 1-for-15 on 3rd down plays with 5 or more yards to go. 3rd and 5 seems like a very risky time to run the ball, especially at the clip we’ve been at all season; however, we’re doing it at least once a game. Huh.
- 38% of our 3rd down passes earn a new set of downs; that number would be drastically higher if there hadn’t been a staggering 51 passes and pass attempts that were short of the stick.
- The Chiefs are the fourth-worst team in the NFL on 3rd down. Only Detroit, Minnesota, and San Fran are worse than us.
Hopefully those numbers will raise up after Sunday’s game against the Chargers.
