No-I-in-team Randy is getting a lot of buzz up in New England. Same thing with Megtron in Motown. But what about Dwayne Bowe and “The D-Bo Show” in Kansas City? With apologies to Mr. Johnson and Mr. Moss, no receiver acquired during last offseason has had a bigger impact on his team than Bowe.
The New England Patriots have been dominant for five-six years now. Up to this point, Randy Moss has just been the difference between winning games and blowing teams out. Would the Patriots not still be 4-0 without Moss? I honestly believe that Belichick’s crew would still be undefeated without its star receiver.
Then there’s Calvin Johnson, who wasn’t even needed yesterday for his Detroit Lions to upset the Chicago Bears.
Am I saying that Bowe is a better player than either of those guys right now? No, even though I think he’s shown that he at least belongs in the same class as Johnson — head and shoulders above the other rookie receivers.
What I am saying is that Bowe is the biggest reason the Kansas City Chiefs are 2-2 and tied for first place in the AFC West. Without him we’d be 0-4 and in last place. As good as Derrick Johnson and Jared Allen have been the last two games — and they’ve been unreal — you have to score in order to win. Bowe has three of our four offensive touchdowns on the season, and has made opposing secondaries look about as bad as Osi Umenyiora made Winston Justice look last night.
You think Cam Cameron, Randy Mueller and the Miami Dolphins are kicking themselves right now for taking Ted Ginn Jr. over Bowe? Are there any Chiefs fans still bitching about how we could’ve drafted Brady Quinn or Tony Ugoh? The critics are starting to sound more like crickets now. You can hardly hear them.
At this point we should just be pinching ourselves and making sure this is real. It’s like a Christmas present a kid finally got after years, and years, and years of asking. King Carl and Co. finally wrapped up a nice little No. 1 receiver for Chiefs fans. This present wasn’t wrapped up by a nice, big bow either — it was a nice, big Bowe.
Bowe is already our No. 1 receiver, too, Herm Edwards has made that much clear. Eddie Kennison will start opposite Bowe, while Samie Parker will head back to the bench (thank God). Contrary to a few of the comments I’ve read, it will mostly be Bowe making Kennison’s job easier, not vice versa. Still, having Kennison out there will make it that much harder for opposing defenses to key on Bowe.
Let’s not pretend that Damon Huard is making Bowe that much better either. In fact, Bowe might be the only reason Huard still has his starting gig. From where I’m watching, it’s Bowe who’s improving significantly from week to week, no matter who he’s faced or where, not Huard. Huard has simply been able to get the ball to Bowe’s vacinity, that is when he’s grown the balls to sit tight in the pocket and strike. It usually takes him a half of football to do so.
Back to Bowe; he’s already ranked in the NFL’s top 25 for receiving touchdowns, receiving yards and 20-plus yard receptions, despite only compiling five catches for 64 yards during the first two games. With two home games on the docket — one of those is against the Bengals’ piss-poor defense, by the way — is there any reason to think he’ll slow down any time soon?
All of you who still remain non-believers — stop being skeptical. Instead of saying it has only been four games, say it has only been four games and he’s already dominating. The D-Bo Show is here to stay, folks — get your tickets while you still can.
