More on Thigpen

by Chiefs

Here’s a little more on new Chiefs quarterback Tyler Thigpen. I love the quote about how Vikings head coach Brad Childress would be sick if he lost Thigpen to another team, but I’m calling B.S. If he liked Thigpen so much, then why did he keep Brooks Bollinger over him? I’m just asking.

Former Coastal Carolina quarterback Tyler Thigpen has made a final roster in the NFL, but it is not with the Minnesota Vikings.

Minnesota, which selected Thigpen in the seventh round of the NFL draft in April, tried to sneak Thigpen through waivers in order to place him on their practice squad, but lost the rights to the 2006 Big South Player of the Year when the Kansas City Chiefs claimed him at noon Sunday.

By claiming him, Thigpen’s agent Joel Turner said, Kansas City was required to add Thigpen to their active 53-man roster. Final NFL roster cuts were made Saturday.

“I’m definitely excited about this opportunity,” Thigpen said prior to his flight to Kansas City on Sunday evening. “I’m thankful the Vikings allowed me the opportunity they did and I’m also thankful for this opportunity.”

The only downside to leaving the Vikings is that Thigpen will have to scramble to learn an entirely new playbook.

“I imagine it is the same kind of concepts,” Thigpen said. “but the terminology is completely different.”

Turner said Thigpen will be third on the Kansas City depth chart behind starter Damon Huard and second-year player Brodie Croyle.

Turner said the Chiefs “were planning on drafting Tyler,” but Kansas City was unable to deal Trent Green, temporarily leaving them with five quarterbacks and no room bring in Thigpen.

“I think [Thigpen] will be on the field in week 8, 9, 10,” Turner said. ” I think he’ll be in the mix.”

Minnesota coach Brad Childress told Minnesota Star-Tribune on Sunday morning that he would “be sick” if the Vikings lost Thigpen. The Vikings had four quarterbacks after acquiring veteran Kelly Holcomb last week, choosing to keep Brooks Bollinger as a third-stringer over Thigpen.

Maybe this kid does have some promise after all. He better; we just gave up on a promising mobile QB who knew the system for him.

I think we'll all see fairly quickly that Printers doesn't have nearly the amount of upside we all claim he does, and doing fairly well against fourth- and fifth-string defenses isn't going to convince me otherwise. I personally would have preferred Leftwich, but this seems to be a clear signal that the Chiefs haven't given up on Brodie Croyle, and I don't blame them. But at least this serves as a back-up plan in case Brodie doesn't pan out.
