The Chiefs have brought in another quarterback, and he’s not a high-profile ex-Jags QB either. Carl Peterson and Co. snatched up rookie Tyler Thigpen after the Minnesota Vikings’ released him this weekend. The Vikings were hoping to sneak him onto their practice squad.
On one hand, I like this signing because two franchises I hold in high esteem — the New England Patriots and Philadelphia Eagles — were reportedly also trying to claim Thigpen. On the other hand, did the Chiefs just replace one veteran developmental project with a rookie one to save a little cheddar? Were the Chiefs just being the Cheaps? Even though Thigpen was drafted (seventh round) and looks like a worthwhile project, I’m pretty disappointed. Seriously, he only threw five passes this preseason, plus his name rhymes with Pig Pen.
The Byron Leftwich pipe dream might be over. Or maybe this is just a back-up plan. I highly doubt it. With so much money invested in Huard, Leftwich’s price tag was likely too hefty for King Carl and owner Clark Hunt.
