If you haven’t heard the breaking news yet, the Jacksonville Jaguars will either release or trade ex-starting quarterback Byron Leftwich. David Garrad has been named the starter, and Quinn Gray — yeah, the guy who came into that Week 17 game at Arrowhead last year and carved the Chiefs up pretty nicely — will serve as the No. 2 QB.
Given that news here’s the big question: Are the Kansas City Chiefs legitimately interested in acquiring Leftwich given the team’s shaky QB situation?
Peter King says that we would “surely be intrigued.” Chris over at Big Cat Country has also heard that rumor.
Obviously, Damon Huard is not a long-term solution. Additionally, I’m not sure we’ll ever be able to weather the storm long enough for Brodie Croyle or Casey Printers to develop into a dependable No. 1 QB, which is all that is needed in Herm Edwards’ system.
Listen, I’m not saying we should completely ditch our 2007 plans or give up on Croyle and Printers. What I am saying is that our best two offensive players — Larry Johnson and Tony Gonzalez — are in their prime right now, so now is the time to win. Especially considering how good we all expect the defense to be. Otherwise, why in the hell did we even bother signing L.J. and Tony G. to their new deals?
Leftwich may not have the strongest arm, or the best mechanics. What he is, however, is one of the smartest, toughest quarterbacks around. He’s also not as slow as people think. He’s simply “the slowest Black QB in the league,” as he has often said about himself.
Why did he get cut? Personally, I feel that Jags head coach Jack Del Rio has had it out for Leftwich since day one. Maybe he felt that Leftwich was injured too much? Maybe he wants a dual-threat QB to help his run-heavy offense move the chains? Really, who knows. I do know that new Jags offensive coordinator Dirk Koetter and the rest of the offensive staff picked Leftwich to be the starter this spring after watching extensive footage of all three QBs. What gives? Maybe he played poorly in the preseason, but so did guys like Damon Huard and Trent Green, and they still have their starting jobs. Honestly, I just think Shooter McGavin Jack Del Rio doesn’t like the dude.
My opinion is that if the price is somewhat minimal, say a fifth-round pick or so, then we should go get him. We should definitely sign him if he gets cut.
