Three Reasons Saturday was Fun

AUTHOR: Blog Z | IN: Gameday | COMMENTS: 6 Comments

*Many thanks to Adam and Zach for letting me contribute here! Let’s have some fun rooting on our ‘07 Chiefs!

Saturday’s game was fun to watch for three reasons:

1. We have depth on defense. Remember last year’s preseason games? Starters on D go out, the other team rolls. Phew, it was nice to see some intensity and talent beyond the starting lineup. There were plenty of mistakes, yes, but even more plays on the ball. How long has it been since you said to yourself: “Man, that backup linebacker can play…” and the phrase applied to at least three different players!

2. T-N-T. It was difficult to not get as giddy as a school girl watching Tank Tyler and Turk McBride play. I personally had worked hard to temper my expectations, especially for Tank since he seemed less dominant in the scrimmage against the Vikes. Instead, #93 was all over the field! Turk was held in check by Joe “Big Money” Thomas on many plays when he was coming off the edge, but I agree with Adam that the Vol held his own. These two guys might make a bigger impact on the dynamic of our defense than anyone else…it is definitely going to be fun to watch them.

3. Situational Football. How many times—it seems—has it been our team that didn’t pursue the lateral or left points on the board at the half? Yes, the turnovers were the nails in the coffin, but to watch so many of our players understanding the situation of the moment was fun and was a great reflection on this coaching staff.

A parting question: Am I missing something or was it notable that Greg Wesley dressed for the game but did not play?

Good to have you on board, Mark!

  3. Earl Hall says:

Herm Edwards came to the Chiefs with the mind set that they put to many points on the board. How else can you win? They (Chiefs) tried to out score their opponents because the defence was subpar but, why mess with the offence? His only concern should have been the defence. Now, that (defence) is much better, the team can't even score a point. The offence was not broke. My question is: Why did Herm find it necessary to say putting up a lot of points is not the way to go? I just don't understand.

Earl,On the surface, I would agree with you that it would seem that just as soon as Herm arrived, the offense went in the tank.  Now, there is no doubt that Herm's philosophy to the game is different than Vermeil's, but I don't think that is the real reason our offense has been struggling.During Vermeil's time with the Chiefs, we were sporting at least two (Roaf and Shields) Hall of Famers on the offensive line, and Brian Waters is one of the best current guards in the league.  Last year, with no Roaf, our offensive tackles struggled the entire year…and I'm convinced that had more to do with our offensive woes than anything else.  When the foundation crumbles, the walls and roof don't fare well. This year, we're going to need McIntosh to solidify that left side.  On Saturday night, just as Adam noted in his post, Svitek got beat again and again and again.  His failures were largely responsible for Brodie's fumble and contributed to the INT.Watch our line play improve and you'll see some offense.  Never the offense installed by Vermeil, but we'll see some offense. If the line play doesn't improve, then it is going to be a long season, regardless of who is playing behind center.
