The first thing that comes to mind is that Bernard Pollard is really putting on a show out there. Yesterday he apparently had a crazy pick-six where he jumped up, tipped the ball, came down with it and took it to the house. Considering the way he hits and tackles, his play in pass coverage is very encouraging. I’m starting to think that Pollard could end up a Pro Bowler, maybe even soon. He’s gotta be the star of camp thus far. Legend… in… the… making — order your No. 49 jerseys now!
After Pollard, rookie Turk McBride has been probably the most impressive Chief up to this point. All I’ve read or heard is that he’s dominating just about every offensive lineman he faces. I honestly wouldn’t be surprised if he ends up being our best defensive rookie.
Brodie Croyle has outperformed Damon Huard so far. If Croyle plays even decently in the preseason, I fully expect him to win the starting QB job.
I’m starting to lose the little faith I originally had in Priest Holmes‘ comeback, and actually loved Jason Whitlock‘s latest column on Mr. Team Priest. My only question: Why would the Dallas Cowboys be interested in Priest? The ‘Boys already have Julius Jones and Marion Barber. After becoming more familiar with the situation, I honestly do think this is all about money. I’m sorry to break it to you Chiefs fans, but it’s better that you find out now.
Rookie Tyron Brackenridge, an undrafted player out of Washington State, is currently the No. 1 nickleback. He’s not as short as Benny Sapp, and he was honrable mention Pac-10 in ’06, his first season as a starter at Wazzou. Basically, he’s got some game. There’s a decent chance that either Brackenridge or Marcus Maxey could rotate with Sapp at NB, who defensive coordinator Gunther Cunningham loves using as a blitzer.
Brad Ekwerekwu has made a lot of big plays already, a few of the spectacular variety. That’s why it puzzles me when The K.C. Star’s Adam Teicher claims he has zero shot at making the 53-man roster. Are the Chiefs really that sold on Chris Hannon and Rod Gardner?
The rumor that John Welbourn is injured (knee) isn’t true. He looked fine today.
No news on Dwayne Bowe and his contract status, except that he has the same agent as JaMarcus Russell, and that Russell’s holdout seems to be ahead of D-Bo’s on the pecking order. I guess that makes sense, especially since they both went to LSU. Still, we need to get him signed. A Kennison-Parker-Webb trio at WR just won’t cut it. Actually, I’m kind of hoping that Samie Parker gets cut, even though he most likely won’t.
T.C. Top Performers: Croyle, Ekwerekwu, McBride and Pollard,as previously mentioned. Jared Allen has been downright unstoppable all camp long. Michael Bennett really shined for the offense on day five, a good sign considering that the other backs have caught cases of fumblitis. Kolby Smith has also impressed, despite the fumbling issues. Jarrad Page‘s play has nearly been on par with fellow safety Pollard’s. Damion McIntosh performed well against Allen and McBride, and looks like he will be solid at the left tackle position in ’07. Tamba Hali — what else would you expect from big No. 91?
T.C. Disappointments: Chris Terry, who’s been unable to block Hali at all. Derrick Ross, Kendrell Bell, Pat Surtain, Ty Law and. Huard has been pretty mediocre as well.
