Training Camp Preview: Special Teams
The Top Five Pre-Training Camp Special Team Questions:
5. Will Bernard Pollard still be a special teams force now that he is expected to be a defensive starter?
That’s hard to answer right now. I do know that the Chiefs would have to be clinically insane to remove him from the punt block team. Expect him to at least remain a part of that unit and block some more punts in ‘07.
4. Every year a player makes a name for himself by racking up a ton of coverage tackles. Who will that player be in’07?
I’d say either Jon McGraw or Brad Ekwerekwu. McGraw was a heck of a special teams performer at K-State, and Eck will have to be great on special teams to earn his roster spot. I wouldn’t count out Nick Reid either, should he make the actual roster.
3. Who will be our return specialist following the departure of Dante Hall?
All signs point to South Florida rookie Ean Randolph, but Jeff Webb is also in the picture. Either way we should be in good hands.
2. Is Justin Medlock going to sign?
I know, I know — dude’s a kicker. Just hurry up and sign already. I expect him to sign here very shortly. After trading Lawrence Tynes, the Chiefs are sort of locked into Medlock.
1. Will Medlock be better than Tynes was last year?
Better? Yes. More consistent? Yes. He has a stronger leg and made some huge kicks (including one that beat USC) at UCLA. I think he’s the perfect kicker for the Herm Edwards system.
