King Carl botches supplemental draft
I can’t believe this — not only did we not pick CB Paul Oliver, but he’s now a member of the San Diego Chargers. Chargers GM A.J. Smith nabbed Oliver with a fourth-round pick. A fourth-round pick! I just don’t understand the logic of why we wouldn’t give up a 2008 fourth-rounder for a guy that would have not been any lower than a second-round pick next year? That makes zero sense. We could have picked him with a fourth too, since the Chargers had a better record than us and picked later. The Chargers just totally made up for the team’s poor draft.
It gets worse. T Jared Gaither, who has the body and attributes of a Pro Bowl tackle, went to the Baltimore Ravens in the fifth round. The fifth round! We could have snatched him right out from under their noses too. Argh! Anyone who tries to argue that Gaither isn’t worth a fifth-round pick is certifiably insane. The guy would have ended up being a top-10 pick in 2009. Trust me. The Ravens may have found Jonathon Ogden’s long-term replacement. That’s how good I think Gaither can be.
Personally, for the first time in a long time (since he took Jason Dunn off the playoff roster to protect Casey Printers) I’m pissed off at King Carl. Like Smith and Ravens GM Ozzie Newsome, Peterson has the job security to take a flier on a supplemental draft pick. Like Clark Hunt is going to fire him during his first full season. Peterson picked Tank Tyler in the third round, and he’s definitely more of a character concern than either of these guys. They didn’t make good grades. OK, they made poor grades. Who cares? This isn’t Mensa, is it? They aren’t QBs, are they? Besides, Vince Young TANKED the Wunderlic test and look at him.
Alright. I’ll spare you from any more. I’ll also update you on any other supplemental draft news later on. – ESPN
(UPDATE) Apparently, ex-Husker G Chris Patrick is still available. Rumor is that he left due to failing steroid test(s?). But as Matt Mosley points out, he was a stellar student at Nebraska. We need a guard, so maybe Carl is waiting to snag him in the seventh. – Hashmarks; The Football Expert

I am going to agree I am not happy with King Carl, but I guess he is playing the odds cause most of these guys turn out to be nothing. Some do but not most.
July 12th, 2007 at 12:54 pmThis is an unusual year talent wise, though. Almost everyone has admitted that. The media acts like this is the lottery, but Wahle, Ahmad Brooks, Jamal Williams, etc… good players come out of this thing from time to time. Top ten picks bust often, and they have the audicity to say that picking a 6-foot-9 tackle who’s like 20 and runs a sub-5.0 40 with a freakin’ fifth-round pick is a gamble? Troy Williamson at five is a gamble. This is low-risk, high-reward.
This shows why both the Chargers and Ravens have been better than us recently. And we had more money than either team, so that’s not it. Unless Clark Hunt got involved.
July 12th, 2007 at 1:02 pmI didnt disagree with that either.
They woulnd't have a supplemental draft if the players were not "unusually" talented. The reason there is this draft is because all of these guys are exceptional players but either got kicked out of school, behavior, steroids, and etc.
So this draft is never about talent is about risk and reward. Some teams, like the Chargers (Merriman & Castillo) and Baltimore (Lewis, Reed), see the reward as being to great to pass on. Which I think is smart if you can pick the right ones. And some teams like the Chiefs weigh the risk as to great.
July 12th, 2007 at 1:11 pmI think they know that the fans and media think the risk is too great, and that gives the Cheaps (yes, I went there) an easy out. The Chargers just showed us why they will win the division again, even with Norv Turner.
July 12th, 2007 at 1:24 pmI would love to see Norv screw it up down there and I wouldn't put it pass him.
The Chargers drafting Paul Olver didn't win them the division. They were a young team last year with a 14-2 record. I don't know who wouldn't pick them to win the West.
July 12th, 2007 at 1:41 pmi wish the chiefs would start getting more aggressive we are very weak at cb ty law isnt what he used to be and same with surtain if one of them goes down we have no depth in that position and at this point and o-lineman would help us.
July 12th, 2007 at 2:16 pmThose are good points you make about Law and Surtain. It would be nice to have a young talented CB playing that nickle for us. I just dont think the other young guys do it for me.
July 12th, 2007 at 2:23 pmAnd scouts said that Oliver was tailor made for the Cover 2 scheme. We effed up big here. A.J. Smith and the Chargers are laughing at us right now.
July 12th, 2007 at 2:30 pmyea we did big time i mean we should have got oliver and the lineman if there a bust ok but what if they turn out to be a big steal so that means well face him twice a year to the chargers and it will make us look stupid cause we should have got them.
July 12th, 2007 at 2:33 pmWe will have to see. I wonder how he will do in Fish-Taco Land. I am not sure if he will even be their 4th best corner this year. Hopefully, he never develops and keeps that 4.6 or slower 40-time.
July 12th, 2007 at 2:36 pmAnd everyone acknowledges that Gaither is a BIG-TIME project right now. I bet anyone that only one will develop into a good player, and thats if one.
July 12th, 2007 at 2:39 pmIf Gaither can keep his weight down, he will be a very good player. Especially learning under the wings of Brian Billeck and Jonathan Ogden, possibly the best offensive mind and best O-lineman in the game.
Oliver ran faster than a 4.6, he ran a 4.5. And he didn't even train, because he was hitting the books (probably a little too late) trying to stay eligible. If he can run with the SEC's WRs, then he can play in the NFL.
Oliver will be the Bolts nickelback in '07, and they were hurting there just as bad as we were. Not any more.
July 12th, 2007 at 3:06 pmI will argue this mistake to the death. That is, unless we go out and sign Chris Patrick. Who could hopefully become a good guard, even 'roids free. We've had good luck with intelligent Gs from Nebraska before, let's give it another shot!!
July 12th, 2007 at 3:08 pmI agree on Oliver, I was starting to love this kid and really hoped we drafted him. That was a mistake, this kid can be special. —— Gaither, on the other hand, is a waste of a pick. Do I take him in the 5th or 6th round, possibly but he has bigger problems than just grades. I have read reports (don't rememer where) where scouts have said he is TREMENDOUSLY lazy and doesn't care about getting better. Sure, that could change, but I would just as soon stay away from the kid personally. ——We should have gotten Oliver though…
July 12th, 2007 at 4:25 pmI agree with the general feelings of pissed-off-ness. Now I just wanna know what's up. Were there rumors or talks of getting Oliver outside of the blog world, e.g. real life? My point is that I'd like to know if Carl or Herm will address this and explain/justify it. I pray to God in Heaven they knew what they were doing. Otherwise, I'm going to chain up the GM to my car and drag him… for 40 yards (or 4.6 seconds… whichever comes first).-cw
July 12th, 2007 at 6:18 pmthe CHIEFS simply have the players they want wether we want others or not…
its kinda like a reciever everyone wanted hey we got one, but last year would have been better… hmmmmmmm lets see T.O…… or bowe…hmmmmmmm, and TO would have been great last year in the playoffs.
July 12th, 2007 at 7:34 pmAdam I am just stating what your boy Matt Mos said over ar hashmarks
"When you hear about a cornerback running a 4.6, you normally look in a different direction."
July 12th, 2007 at 7:45 pm"Were there rumors or talks of getting Oliver outside of the blog world, e.g. real life?"The Chiefs worked him out and I'm guessing that they would have tried to get him in the 5th round. Not sure if Oliver or Gaither were really "Herm guys".
July 13th, 2007 at 11:22 amOk so Matt Mos. rounded up. He ran a 4.55, still rather slow for a CB.
July 13th, 2007 at 11:41 am[...] Gaiter will have? Well, if you’re the guys over at Arrowhead Addict, a KC Chiefs site, you’ve declared the second coming of Jonathan Ogden: It gets worse. T Jared Gaither, who has the body and attributes of a Pro Bowl tackle, went to the [...]
