Just how bitter are Kansas City sports fans?
According to BitterFans.com — pretty freakin’ bitter. Kansas City sports fans were ranked as the 11th most-bitter fans in the site’s recent “The Official List of Sports’ Suffering” column.
Honestly, I think we should have been among the top-five most bitter. The Chiefs have the best fans in the AFC West hands down, maybe the league, and that’s despite the fact that each of our division rivals have made the Super Bowl at least once since we have (The Denver Broncos have made six appearances, the Los Angeles/Oakland Raiders three). At least the Buffalo Bills made four Super Bowls in a row (beating us once in the AFC Championship during the process while nearly killing Joe Montana).
I think Cleveland Browns fans might be the only group of NFL fans who could possibly be more bitter than us (but the Cavs and Indians have had more recent success than either of our teams, so…). I think the Royals probably hurt us a bit on this list. They won a championship in ‘85, and the general consensus is that K.C. only cares about football. That couldn’t be further from the truth. Give us a Royals owner that cares just as much about winning as the bottom line, like Ewing Kauffman, and the fans will be back among MLB’s best.
Anyway, here’s the excerpt:
11) Kansas City – Last Championship: 1985. Kansas City is a sports’ town madly in love with its football team. And while the Royals have done everything they could to drive them away, they’re still pretty good baseball fans too. It’s hard to believe the Royals were a good team in the 80s and they even won a controversial World Series in 1985. That’s becoming a distant memory for a fan base that has had good Chiefs’ teams who haven’t been good enough to get over the hump, and an extended run of crappy baseball to follow. (Overly Objective Rankings: passion – 5, weather – 3, length since last title – 3, close calls – 3).

Absolutely no way that Chicago comes in at no. 12. The Cubs do not balance out the Bulss in the 1990s!
June 25th, 2007 at 3:13 pm*BullsCleveland is an acceptable no. 1 too.
June 25th, 2007 at 3:17 pmI don't know. Look, I agree with Cleveland — but why in the world are we 11th. We have arguably the best fans in the NFL despite last making the Big Game in '69. Yeah, that was the same year as Woodstock everybody. The Royals have been such an embarrassment that the '85 championship has been more than wiped. The Royals are the MLB version of the Clippers. It hurts… it hurts…
June 25th, 2007 at 5:04 pmOK the one thing that stands out here is….WEATHER??????????? What the hell does weather have to do with anything? I have been to chiefs games when it was in the single digits!!!!!!!!!!! this alone should rank us up there with the best teams with crappy weather, I was at the rain game that got shortened, when the water was above my ankles in the stands…and the about six inches on the field and then ther lightening came….I was at a Royals game, when they had tornadoes and they let everyone move down to the lower level…real cool. *REALLY KOOL* Ive seen Royals fans stand in line for GA tickets starting the night before….. Ive seen sellout crowds at the K…when the team was still 20 games under 500…..the problem in KC is that neither team will sellout for a championship in thier respective sport. They plan on milking every year with a well we gave it an honest try…Both clubs do this and have for the last 20 years!!!!! Your correct if Glass wants to fill the seats, what he needs to do is field a winning team, the fans will pay to see them liveand in person again…it costs to much for families to go anymore…when I was a kid there were jobs available, which comon people had which would pay to be able to go and see them play… Do you know what it costs a small four person family to go and see a game now at the K? Hell you pay more now for parking than We did our tickets when I used to go all the time…You pay more for season royals tickets than you do Chiefs tickets.
June 25th, 2007 at 5:28 pmThe royals have become nothing more than the major league team used as a step above AAA for all other teams, yes all other teams, have us to see what players can do against other true major league players. look at the outfield we would have had if we would have spent money on them…The chiefs have been so close to making it to the top player wise so many damned times…just think what this team could have done with a wide reciever in the last five years… a great one…even if it was TO who would care if the team was having to deal with him and his antics…if it ment a championship…and meant loosing players to the cap afterwords… for another ring.
June 25th, 2007 at 5:44 pmDont be dissing my Royals
The problem was that ownership was in shambles after Kauffman passed. Only now is Glass serious about making this team respectful and I know Dayton Moore and Co will make that happen. Buddy Bell will be gone after this season and we can bring in a new coach with a team I think will compete for the division next year or the next.
June 26th, 2007 at 9:26 amGlass is a scumbag. I'll believe it when I see it.
June 26th, 2007 at 1:48 pmGlass was a big reason we didnt get A multi millionare owner… Dont get me wrong here I love the Royals and enjoy going , but you know like everyone else… the Royals wont keep the players they have that require money. except for an overpaid first baseman who was always hurt and wasnt tradeable. I have even heard when people say try and sign them long term… why would they… the players know they can play here (even if comming back from injury) , and then move up to the actuall majors… We have had good players and teams here in KC…. and time and time again , ownership lets them go away….. Glass wants the team to pay for itself…and the only way foir that to happen is to have fan support… and the best way to fill the stands is to put a team out there and keep it there….. we had the largest one year attendance record for a long time, until recently… yes our royals held that record… but with an organization , lacking an owner… willing to spend it to make it ….. it is harder and harder to see us make even the playoffs. *ADAM your correct.* and besides who was in controll of the group which ran the royals when we waited for an owner…HMMMMMMMMMMMMmm… could it be the guy who ran the team into the ground until he could buy it so damned cheap himself…YES!!!!!!!And we have heard the next year inthusiasm since 1986
