10 WRs, only five or six spots

by Chiefs

Chris over at Arrowhead Pride posted a nice little table of all our current wide receivers. It sure is nice that the Kansas City Chiefs of all teams finally have almost too much talent at the position. Granted, most of that talent is unproven, but still it’s a nice change from previous seasons.

Now, 10 WRs are on that list, but I only think our roster has room for 5 or 6 of them. I have as good of a chance to make the roster as Maurice Price and Titus Ryan. Dwayne Bowe and Eddie Kennison’s spots are guaranteed. Samie Parker, unfortunately, will probably make the team as well. I think that Jeff Webb is too promising a talent not to make the team, and I feel the same way about Brad Ekwerekwu.

All of that means that Chris Hannon, Ean Randolph and Rod Garner will likely compete for the final roster spot, if they’re lucky. I give the edge to Ean Randolph, but only because I think he’ll make the team as our return specialist. I’m just not sold on either Parker or Webb returning kicks, and Randolph was an electric return man in college. And, yes, I know Webb had that one good return last year.

Which receivers do you think will make the cut?

Chris, maybe we can keep seven, but that would be roughly an eighth of our roster. That's one or two too many if you ask me. Eck, Hannon, Randolph, hell, even Parker and Webb could become roster casualties. Only D-Bo and Kennison are safe.

As for Horn and Lilja, only players on the 55-man roster at the end of the season are protected and your final roster has to be set before Week 17. That's how we lost Lilja and why Casey Printers was active in the playoffs against the Colts and Jason Dunn wasn't (IR). The same thing might have happened with Horn? I honestly can't remember. The Chiefs finished 9-7, the same record two playoff teams had (Colts and Jags), so that could've been the reason.

Does anybody else remember exactly what happened with Joe?

Adam: Sammy Parker is... another word for a cat. Absolutely. I disagree with you on the Joe Horn point, however. In case you don't remember, 1996 featured such great WRs like Tamarick Vanover (stoner), Sean LaChappelle (what ever happened to him?), Danan Hughes (ST lifer), Victor Bailey (Who?), Chris Penn (what a choice of a draft pick), and Lake Dawson (whose only contribution to the Chiefs was sounding like a body of water in Southeast Missouri). A little known Joe Horn only had 2 catches that year (for a 15 yard-per-catch average, 2nd on the team to LaChappelle). Who was the genius in charge of the slip-up not to sign him?[My take: The Chiefs tried to pull a fast one with him under the radar like Ryan Lilja to the Colts. Those both panned out... for those other playoff teams.]Again, I'm sticking with what was posted, although I'm interested in Hannon over Randolph. Too bad we can't keep 7. -cw*http://www.jt-sw.com/football/pro/rosters.nsf/Annual/1996-kc

Samie is a p****. There -- I said it so nobody else has to.  Nothing personal against him, I just loathe the way he plays. I hope he gets cut, but I doubt he will.

And I really, really think Ean Randolph will return kicks.

I agree about Parker... I liked him when we drafted him but he never has caught the ball like I thought he would have!@!!!@!!!!  and he has had way more time and chances to prove he can play in the big leagues!

Edwards likes Hannon, and Web....thats one reason for the change of offensive play calling now, besides Herman wanting his offense now.  ***And ECK is a major steal the way I am seeing things... he has a guy who can throw to him no matter which QB is in there now.*** and he is even streching out  and diving for the balls, and making the catches!!!!!!  in the endzone this guy will make people think twice on triple covering Tony G. and they cant double cover both.

I am not sure Samie Parker is probable for making the team.

edwards says he likes hannon.  i think he stays and webb returns kicks.

I don't think Joe Horn would have ever been buried beneath Parker and Hall on the depth chart, even as a rookie, but that's just me. Hannon's all hype at this point.

I second your picks. Too bad Hannon gets the boot. What if he turns into another Joe Horn?-cw
