On NFL Live yesterday, the crew discussed the possibility of our Kansas City Chiefs trading for or signing (should he be released) lame duck Miami Dolphins QB Daunte Culpepper. Before you fall out of your computer chair laughing your asses off, let’s at least consider the possibility. The Chiefs believe that either Brodie Croyle or Damon Huard will be the answer at QB, but how sure can they possibly be? After all, neither player has ever been a day-one NFL starting QB, and compared to someone like Culpepper we’ve seen very little of either player. Culpepper’s only 30, and he’s also only three years and one horrific injury removed from one of the most prolific seasons a QB has ever had. I won’t even mention Casey Printers here, because I’m not sure he’ll even make the final roster. For all intents and purposes, the Chiefs only have two QBs on the roster.
All of that means the Chiefs potentially could be interested in Culpepper, right?
Wrong.
The Chiefs have a ball control offense, and Fumblepepper turns the ball way too much for head coach Herm Edwards‘ liking. C-Pepp’s carelessness with the ball isn’t his only drawback — he’s also a drama queen who will want to both get paid and start.
On second thought, Culpepper is a horrible option at quarterback, even if he only costs a future late-round draft pick. If the Chiefs seriously were entertaining bringing in another proven commodity, don’t you think they would have pursued David Carr? The chances of the Chiefs acquiring Culpepper are about the same as Trent Green pulling a Billy Donovan and coming back to Kansas City. This hypothetical situation has essentially zero chance of ever coming true, and for Chiefs fans that’s a good thing.
