The COAT First-Round: DL group results

by Chiefs

Junious “Buck” Buchanan (photo credit: remembertheafl.com)Buck Buchanan pulled away in this one early — real early. Then our poll crashed. With Neil Smith barely in second, and with Jerry Mays and Dan Saleaumua surging, we went to overtime to determine the second player who would advance from The COAT DL Group. Here are the results:

  • Jerry Mays – 51% (29 votes)

  • Neil Smith – 28% (16 votes)

  • Dan Saleaumua -21% (12 votes)

Mays advances along with Buchanan and the Donks are shut out of the Chief Sixteen. It took some serious politicking on my end, but Neil, for you, The COAT pipe dream stops here. He gets his two rings, we get to exact a minuscule amount of revenge. Works for me. Let’s move on…

The COAT LB GROUP:

  • EJ Holub
  • Jim Lynch
  • Sherrill Headrick
  • Bobby Bell
  • Willie Lanier
  • Dino Hackett
  • Derrick Thomas
  • Gary Spani
  • Donnie Edwards

We’ll take a look at these guys over the weekend, but you can head over to the “List of Kansas City Chiefs players” Wikipedia page in the meantime if you want to do some research prior to voting.

true but my point was that he didnt win it by just getting sacks.

Hell, nobody in the history of the game has ever gotten that sack or even a seventh one. I think we all can forgive him for not getting eight sacks. After all, seven sacks is already like something out of a video game.

but he didnt get THAT SACK .

I'm pretty sure that the Chiefs lost that game in spite of him instead of because of him. He almost got an eighth sack which would have won that game. Believe it or not, I actually remember that one quite well.

even with his pass rushing abilities... he didnt beat seattle, with his best game...one guy doesnt win a game

I'm going to get to my D.T. piece tomorrow, but for now I'll just say this:

There are only a handful of front-seven players -- Ray Lewis, the original L.T., Jason Taylor and Julius Peppers come to mind -- that I've seen in my lifetime who have shared D.T.'s ability to totally change the game around with one single play. More to come...

I hear you but it wasnt just a DT rule change...hahahahatake a look at the whole def.there were allot , I mean  *ALLOT*  of players who were racking up sacks left and right across the league. And the rule change was also (partially) because of crowd noise..... Both of the two reasons prompted the rules committy  and the owners to change where there tackles line up.proof is by looking at the number of single players with 15 plus sacks a season, we have now as to back then.

redbeard: I have no problem for anyone voting for Bell or Lanier over DT. I am guessing DT will advance anyway due to the age factor. I do agree that DT was more one-dimensional than either Bell or Lanier. I would probably rank DT #3 for linebackers. Just to play a bit of devils advocate, something that I think gets overlooked with DT is that his pass rushing ability had alot to do with the NFL allowing OTs to line up a step back of the Guards and Center. When your skill has alot to do with forcing a rules change, you have accomplished alot.

Merlinnj, your correct in that they should advance over D. Edwards, as Donnie is a very very good player he never ecselled at anyone area of the game, although he has always been great in coverage and tackling, he just has never had that something special to put him over the top, that those other three have had.To me it boils down to the fact that Bobby Bell and Willie Lanier were both way more complete players, than was DT............. no way people can say different...............yes I know they will anyways, but they are wrong. And I differ in that I dont think he(DT) makes the Hall of Fame soon, ***trust me I dont hate DT****, I loved what he did here,( I remember when he literally called a saftey on Jeff George when he was with the Raiders, and we got that safety)............... but as for the COAT I dont buy it at all, there is no way possible to change my mind.....what the two HOF'ers  have that he doesnt they both covered, they both tackled like we havn't seen here since.

most people dont agree.but true he could not cover.. and team ran on him to his side.

In my view, you have three players for two spots. Bobby Bell and Willie Lanier are both HOF's and DT will be there soon. As much as I love Donnie Edwards, I would hate to see him get in over Lanier and/or Bell.

I don't agree here... I'll post on D.T. this weekend, give my perspective.

I know D. Thomas will move on just because he has so many, fans who overhype his abilities...and overlook what he left out of his game completely...think of it this way Hali could get ten sacks in a game woo-hoo.But if he missed two tackles that lead to two touchdowns, to me thats not a complete player.  Yes he could turn games in our favor and take them over, for us........But he also didnt show up just as many times. He also lost them as well, remember the monday game VS. the Donkeys...he himself lost that game single handedly even though we had others playing...DT wasnt a very good coverage guy either, yes I know we didnt have him for that, but my point is he couldnt do the other things a linebacker is supposed to do, period.Ask D. Edwards what kind of player he(DT) was.....hahahahaha   D. Thomas also wont make it into the Hall Of Fame in Canton.....because he wasnt a complete player...Willie Lanier was a complete player, and a standout also, on a team full of standout defensive players. And if we dont know it he is in the HALL OF FAME.That tells you that among the players he played with he was the best, where as DT probably wont make it because of the other players he was playing with at the time. Please dont vote him in because you buy into the fact that he could rush the passer...did that get us a ring?

I like this site better , but thats me...lolhttp://www.jt-sw.com/football/they dont have added comentary , just raw stats
