UFC: Brand of sport or "human cockfighting?"

UFC 71: Jackson vs. Liddell (photo credit: ufc.com)With the big UFC 71: Chuck “The Iceman” Liddell vs. Quenton “Rampage” Jackson title fight going down tonight, I wanted to ask our readers the following question: Is UFC a sport, or is it simply another example of extreme TV? I think you have to consider it a sport. Boxers just box; these guys know “real” wrestling, boxing and a variety of martial arts techniques, making them some of the most versatile — not to mention ballsiest and toughest — athletes in the World. Yeah, the UFC is violent, but so is the NFL. Still, some skeptics remain. For example, Senator John McCain (R-AZ) once called the UFC “human cockfighting.” Sounds like something Michael Vick could get into.

Anyway, check out this YouTube clip of the first Iceman vs. Rampage battle, and be sure to vote down below. We will update The COAT soon, so watch out for that as well as you enjoy the long Holiday weekend.

tidly winks is more a sport, nascar never will be a sport, I dont care that the drivers need to be in good shape so do astronauts but they are not athletes of a sport either…

Golfers ,hahahaha only people who play golf think its a sport…

As for UFC it is however entertainment.

and they are becoming more commercial as they go they no longer go with out rules…haha they added some so TV would start carrying it and giving them money. Another victory there for the American way…follow the money :)

seriously though if you consider kickboxing a sport,
if you consider actual wrestling a sport, and if you consider boxing a sport then yes it is a sport…

but I don’t compare anything to Nascar or golf…
because I don’t consider them true sports any more than I do a person who plays Billiards an athletic sportsman.
or someone who throws darts, or the adults who race miniature race cars for mega dollars today…

now we could argue that we make sport of these, and that would make more logical since…..

    but that wasn’t the question….

*oops did they sponsor this , if they did then absolutely its a sport…hahahahahahahahaha***

i’m psyched that jackson won. although, they both seem like super guys. i think i was the only one in a bar of 300 that was going for rampage. all the fights at 71 were solid. feel bad for chuck but he will be back.

  6. Adam says:

Chuck got a little David Beckham on us all fast. Someone kind of needed to bring him back down to earth. I just love the way Rampage fights — he’s an animal. I like Silva, too… just watched that fight (64?) where he disfigured that school teacher’s face today. WOW!

  7. big_chief87 says:

ya, that was brutal. i can’t believe GSP lost to matt serra, that was a bummer. i hope ortiz gets crushed be evans he just talks way too much.

  8. Zach says:

Man I couldn’t believe that GSP lost. I thought he was about to dominate in his class. Just goes to show that in MMA anyone can win and lose which is why it makes it so exciting, unlike boxing. Its almost like football really. I am happy that it is finally getting recognition that it should be. Also in the UFC there has never been a death from fighting.

I can’t wait to see Anderson Silva destroy Rich Franklin’s nose again. Tito and Rashard should be an interesting fight as well as Henderson-Jackson, which I think Henderson will win.
