Apparently, there was at least one fellow highly touted rookie WR who had a worse rookie minicamp than Dwayne Bowe — New Orleans Saints WR Robert Meachem. Check out these nuggets from The Times-Picayne:
“Saints receiver Robert Meachem was down on himself Sunday after having the worst kind of welcome-to-the-NFL experience during rookie minicamp.
The Saints’ first-round draft pick admittedly arrived out of shape after falling behind in offseason workouts this spring. He then tweaked his left ankle Sunday morning and had to head to the training room…
Meachem said part of the reason he fell behind this spring was that he had nine pre-draft visits with NFL teams, each of which seemed to include a fancy meal or two…
“You know, a receiver’s got to be able to run all day — and he needs to drop a lot of weight to get back into the playing shape we saw on film. I’m sure he’ll work hard at doing that. He’s going to have to if he wants to compete with the group he’s going to be in at minicamp.” (Saints head coach Sean Payton)
Later, Payton again emphasized that point, saying, “Those guys he’s going to compete against are a lot further along right now. A lot.”
It looks like the only “Cure” for this Fat Bob is going to be cutting the carbs and cranking up the cardio. I, for one, am glad our Kansas City Chiefs took D-Bo instead. There has always been something about Meachem that’s scared me. This only backs up that gut instinct.
