Smitty got paid, so why not L.J.?

by Chiefs

(Photo credit: espn.go.com)The Carolina Panthers did the right thing by extending Steve Smith’s contract three years, and making Smith one of the “five highest-paid receivers in the league.” If you play like a top-five receiver for more than one season, then you should be compensated like a top-five receiver salary-wise. I feel the same way about every other position as well. Maybe King Carl and our Kansas City Chiefs should catch on and extend Larry Johnson?

Like Smith, L.J. is not only undoubtedly a top-five player at his position, but arguably one of the two best. Because of this he should be paid as well as any running back, except maybe LaDainian Tomlinson. I can already hear some of the more pessimistic, close-minded Chiefs fans grumbling. Some of you just don’t like L.J., do you? My brother told me that a 610 caller said that L.J. was too much of a “thug” recently. Why, because he has tattoos and hangs out with Jay-Z? L.J. made a few mistakes early in his career, but ever since then he has done nothing but help the Chiefs win ball games. It’s not his fault that he’s not quite as swell of a guy as Priest Holmes. Who is?

We really need to get this done — extend the man, Peterson! Not every team is the Denver Broncos and can just plug in anybody back there. Hell, even the Broncos can’t seem to do that any longer. Also, as Chiefs fans we’ve been spoiled by Priest and L.J. Contrary to popular belief, these guys are not mass-produced at a place called Running Backs-R-Us.

We need to remind ourselves how durable L.J. has been, a rarity at the RB position. In fact, he’s been way, way more durable than Smith, while playing just as well at a much more physical position. I still think the Panthers were right to extend Smitty, though. Just not as right as King Carl and the Chiefs would be by extending their bread-and-butter man and making him one of the five highest-paid running backs in the league.

HUMBLE SCUMBLE

IF we had a TO at wideout last year what a difference it would have made.....
And the chiefs new it...look at what they drafted ...lol

a players personality doesnt matter when it comes to a contract...
as for the contract I think he ends up with
20-25 million to sign and around eight a year.

and for those who dont think they will have him run the ball just watch.....he will carry 350 times

I can see why he wants a new contract right now. he is getting payed as a back up, and he is not a back up(I don't think the chiefs would have signed him to a huge deal with holmes tearing up the league). also, what happens if he gets hurt this year, or what happens if he can't produce the the numbers he has in the past. he wants to get payed on last years stats while they are still the most recent, as well as establish some sort of insurance for the future. I just don't get the vibe that he's being very humble throughout this process.

OK... Honestly, think about it take LJ out of the question...

Just MAKE it or CALL it a PLAYER....
All I hear is whether or not he is worth it...
I think he is...
He wants an extension folks not the same as
Pay me or I'm not playing...OH WAIT a minute that is what he is saying.
And yes Tony G. did this also I didn't like it then either...
Now with that said , why cant we understand
What the term ...CONTRACT IS ???
Yes a NFL players time is numbered...wow what a new concept,
*players used to play for thirty years way back when*...(just my sarcasm folks)*

Larry Johnson AND EVERY OTHER PLAYER DRAFTED
knows this, just as do we the fans.

Why sign a contract that pays you under a million in the last year of a contract(when he voids the last two years),And then try to extort money early for that low paid year???
Did he pay back any money he earned sitting in Dicless Vermans doggy House on the bench.
I remember when R. Williams signed his deal...
BOO HOO...the one heavy with incentives...lol

We must understand there are two issues here.

They are working an extension, It will get done,
LJ retires here, that simple,
Before LJ hits the market Carl will pay him...
A very large paycheck, trust me VERY LARGE...
King Carl doesnt wish to have an AUCTION to keep him against other teams...

My problem comes here, HE SIGNED A CONTRACT to hold out and not play in order to presure a team into paying a player more is wrong....to me it's wrong...
no matter if it is a NFL STAR player or me at my job...

The amount of what they come up with is between
Carl & LJ

I think your franchise players should have a certain degree of selflessness to them. It sets a good example for everyone else on the team as well as showing the team how committed you are. Larry will need money for his future, but that much is a tad greedy and way excessive. I can tell you even with   what he's making now,he's not living in a tent down by the river.

Guys that restructure, the Tom Bradys and the Peyton Mannings, have already made their fortune and have been around for awhile. This is a totally different situation.

It's unfair to say that he doesn't care about the team's success. For what he brings to the table the guys is getting paid peanuts. He has to take care of his future, I don't blame him one bit.

I just had a look at how much he will be making next year, and I think it's under a million. I strongly agree, he should be making way more than that, and yes I feel he should be making as much as a top five RB (even if the posision is somewhat over-valued). However, I'm not sure it would be a wise move for the chiefs to pay a running back that much money, never mind his asking price, when they have so many other needs to focus on. And yeah, he was extremely durable, but how long will that last, the guy has only played a total of like two years. There are players in this league who re-structure their contracts and make less, so that the organization can bring in more players to make the team better. What is happening here, seems to be the opposit. LJ shouldn't make less, but it's obvious, the team's success is not weighing very heavily on his mind when demanding this much money.

I think L.J. is just one of those guys that turns some people off. Not really sure why, but he just does. Steven Jackson has the same problem with Rams fans, so it's not just a KC problem. Funny thing is, I think both players are arguably better than their predecessors.

Sooner or later, I'm going to call out the LJ haters and have them lay down their case based on FACTS and not cite "unnamed sources" who just repeat the word "cancer" until it sticks.

Phil at MVN Chiefs made a good, level headed argument why we should trade LJ. I don't agree with him entirely but it was a smart, well thought argument, which is not what we usually hear on this topic.
