Kolby Smith will get plenty of burn in '07

(Photo credit: theinsiders.com)Contrary to the opinions stated by many fellow Chiefs fans and pundits, I honestly believe that Kolby Smith can contribute for our Kansas City Chiefs in ‘07. Here’s why…

A.) Michael Bennett is always hurt. Honestly, other than Grant Hill I really don’t know anyone in pro sports that has been injured as much as this guy. The kids probably even used to call him Mr. Glass back in elementary school.

B.) When was the last time a NFL Europe player really came back and played well here in the states? Kurt Warner? I know Derrick Ross is somewhat tearing it up overseas, but the level of competition he has played against both over there and back in college just isn’t on par with the talent Kolby faced at Louisville.

C.) Kris Wilson and Boomer Grigsby are both playing out of position, masquerading as fullbacks. Kolby started at FB for two seasons at Louisville.

D.) As much as I love my boy Larry Johnson, and I’m practically his agent, he isn’t the best pass blocker in the world. On third and long I’m confident that Kolby can get the job done picking up blitzers. He’s a pretty damn good blocker.

I think Kolby will play quite a bit of FB and also some third-down back next season. I don’t see him hitting many homeruns, but his hands are good, he breaks tackles and has some nice open-field moves for a bigger back. He’s actually faster than most think, as evidenced by his respectable 4.5 40 time at the Combine. I see him being our next T-Rich or Kimble Anders type — a blocking-receiving-rushing hybrid back. I think a lot of people will be pleasantly surprised by this kid’s play come this upcoming season. Hopefully, I’m right and he steps up. You really need two quality running backs in today’s NFL.

Moslowsky *(sp)…now why did they let D. Edwards leave in the first place….HMMMM
could it be we had Mike to play MLB…yes I think it was…lol, and he was from the NFL Europe group we sent of that time.

Ross is leading the nfl europe in rushing yards, but he still avg’s less than 4 yards per carry, against “lesser competition” and will be gassed when he gets back. Adam Shefter(?) of NFL Network thinks the chiefs are being very opptimistic thinking larry is a 50% chance to be at training camp. Bennett is a situational, change of pace guy, so really by default, Smith has a good chance to get perhaps the majority of first team reps in camp this year depending on how fast he can retain all the new info thrown at him. If he’s anything like kimble anders, I think LJ should be a little worried. I remember Anders (three time pro bowler i think) getting a crack as the starting rb, and rolling for 140+ against denver. I think he got hurt the next game and was out the rest of the season, but still not a bad guy to be compared to.

Maslowski was okay. Personally, I thought he was a bit overrated because he was tough and white, kind of the common man everyone could root for. He was a technically solid player with a ton of heart and will, but ultimately he was too slow. After that knee injury I imagine he was just way too slow to ever come back. I enjoyed watching him play, but he was always just too slow. I like our LBs now — speedy!

Anders did make three Pro Bowl trips. All I’m saying about Smith is that King Carl does know how to draft fullbacks with good hands and solid rushing ability. He could ultimately be a good one.

If King Carl knew how to draft fullbacks we would have Leonard,…lol had to wait for me to say that one huh…lol

Mike was good enough to allow Edwards to leave…although I didn’t like the Idea…

speedy and they know how to tackle.
