Retirement Holmes?

(Photo credit: rpspecialt.com)We haven’t discussed the Priest Holmes situation in some time, so with a new Joe Posnanski article in the KC Star out on him that basically tells us a whole lot but also nothing, I figured that I’d chime in.

Priest Holmes is not coming back to play for the Kansas City Chiefs. Not this season. Not next season. Never.

I wish he was. Oh, how I wish he was. L.J. and Priest would make Baby Matrix and Deuce or Fred and MJD (no, not the blogger) look like chopped liver. Especially with D-Bo now in the house.

From reading Priest’s comments every six weeks or so, which is as often as we hear from him, there is most definitely some fear, some trepidation there as far as his long-term health is concerned. I just don’t think Priest feels comfortable risking his health, his family’s future, etc… I mean, what else does he have left to accomplish?

A Super Bowl. That’s it.

Winning a Super Bowl is not an obtainable goal for the Chiefs this season, and it hasn’t happened in Kansas City in nearly 40 years. Why would Priest risk his health, maybe even his life, for something that he has virtually no shot at accomplishing. Even for a player of his caliber, winning a Super Bowl would be out of his control. Winning a championship is truly a 53-man effort, and I’m not sure the Chiefs will have the other 52 guys needed during the next three or four years to help him win it all.

It means a lot for me that Priest is only considering returning to the Chiefs, and not another team at this point. While that’s a nice gesture and all, that’s all it is — a gesture. My bet is that Priest Holmes will never play a single NFL snap again. Why should he?

So now we are stuck with Larry Johnson, Michael Bennett and Kolby Smith at the running back position, which still isn’t so bad. Hey, if you doubt me just go ask the Green Bay Packers if they’d like to trade places RB-wise. In fact, you don’t have to, because the Pack already tried to trade for L.J.

Let’s just be thankful that we even had Larry around to step in and replace Priest, which he has definitely done. Things could be worse; we could have traded L.J. after the diapers fiasco, and Priest could have been critically injured by the despicable Shawne Merriman.

don’t forget about derrick ross too. he is tearing nfl europe to pieces and herm and the boys really like him. with drafting kolby smith he probably wont make an impact this season, but if/when bennett moves on from the chiefs OR LJ leaves he will be a contributor. mark my words…
