I figured it was time to put something together for our Final Mock Draft’s second-round pick for the Kansas City Chiefs — Cal CB Daymeion Hughes. The big knock on Hughes is his speed, and I won’t sit here and lie to you and tell you he’s the next Darrell Green or Prime Time. However, his track (no pun intended) record speaks for itself. I just don’t agree that a subpar performance on the track should totally wreck his once-stellar scouting report. I honestly believe Hughes will be one of the biggest steals of the 2007 NFL Draft. More on Hughes…

Daymeion Hughes media analysis:
ESPN’s John Clayton raves about Hughes in today’s (4/27) “First… and 10, NFL Draft Edition”:
“Fast corners: Speed is everything at cornerback. Seven of the top nine cornerbacks in this draft run in the 4.3s with Chris Houston of Arkansas being the best at 4.32. The best debate is the one-two punch of Leon Hall of Michigan and Darrelle Revis of Pitt. Both run in the 4.3s. Hall is the better Cover 2 cornerback. Revis is the best pure man coverage guy. Both should go in the top 15. The bargain of the group could be Daymeion Hughes of Cal. He’s a read-and-react cornerback but doesn’t run very fast. Hughes was clocked at 4.65. Nathan Vasher of Texas ran a bad 40 coming out of school, but he ended up starting for the Bears and going to a Pro Bowl.”
Fanhouse’s Brian Grummell gives a glowing review of Hughes in his “College Eye for the NFL Guy: Daymeion Hughes” blog post:
“GUY WHO WATCHED HIM FOUR YEARS SAYS
He’s taking a beating with the scouts for his speed and gambling and questionable man coverage ability. That said, I think he has the necessary combination of size, speed, toughness, confidence and innate playmaking ability to be a reliable corner. Much of the league has adopted the cover-two scheme Hughes could thrive in so it’s not like he’s without options on where he’ll end up.
At times I found Hughes to be a near-dominant performer in a league loaded with pass-happy offenses and quality quarterbacks. That absolutely cannot be overlooked. He may not be a difference-making all-pro cornerback but he should be an average top corner or above average number two for most teams.”
My Top 10 Reasons to Pick Daymeion Hughes:
- 10. Second on the Bears defense last season with 72 tackles (37 solo). Maybe he can teach Greg Wesley how to wrap up?
- 9. Played well in the pass-happy Pac-10. Yes, that means he faced USC on a regular basis.
- 8. Made several pick-sixes during his career. I thought he was slow?
- 7. Playboy All-American who really isn’t a playboy.
- 6. Studied art in college. Hey, aren’t we looking for someone to paint a Will Shields portrait for the Chiefs HOF?
- 5. Four-year college starter. Even at the CB position that is a rare feat.
- 4. Was Mel Kiper’s second-favorite CB before he ran a 4.65 40 at the combine. Fickle-ass Kiper.
- 3. He won the 2006 Ronnie Lott IMPACT Trophy for the top defensive player in the nation who exhibits leadership and integrity on and off the football field.
- 2. Everybody’s First-Team All-American as a senior. Can they take that back after his slow 40 time, too?
- 1. When he hears someone mention Starry Night, he thinks of Van Gogh, not a strip club.
