SportsNation's Pick — OT Joe Staley
ESPN.com’s SportsNation selected OT Joe Staley out of Central Michigan as their first-round pick for the Kansas City Chiefs earlier today. I’m not sure how credible the SportsNation mock draft is, given that LB Patrick Willis damn near won the vote. C’mon, linebacker is arguably our strongest position. Still, Staley is a decent prospect that I don’t necessarily consider the second coming of Trezelle Jenkins. Would I be thrilled if the Chiefs picked Staley? No. Could I live with the pick? Maybe, but I’d be extremely disappointed. I still want Revis, Jarrett or Harrell, probably in that order. Bowe or Ross wouldn’t be too bad either. Pretty much anyone else, including Staley, will turn my live draft diary into what Eddie Murphy once dubbed a “curse show.” Well, besides a player who should be long gone by the 23rd pick (DT Amobi Okoye, for example).
Here is what ESPN’s Jeremy Green said about the selection:
“The Chiefs first need as it has been for the past 2-3 years is WR. However, the sudden retirement of Will Shields and the loss of FA OT Jordan Black has the Chiefs line in disarray. Everything the Chiefs have been able to accomplish in recent years has started up front with one of the best offensive lines in the NFL. Over the past two seasons they have lost perennial Pro Bowl players in Willie Roaf and Will Shields and for that reason I like the selection of Staley. He is an excellent athlete who is a solid pass blocker. He has the frame to add 10-15 pounds which will improve his run blocking skills. The Chiefs need a playmaker, but the O-line has been their staple on offense and for that reason I think Staley is a great pick here.”

If they wanted to draft an O-lineman first round, reach for Blalock, as I don’t see him there for us in the second, he will make a great guard if the team that drafts him will move him inside as opposed to keeping him as a tackle.
April 19th, 2007 at 10:26 pmAlthough I see us drafting a DT. first round.
What DT do you see falling to us redbeard?
April 20th, 2007 at 7:45 amGreen talks about the loss of Black but doesn’t talk about our signing of Big Damien.
April 20th, 2007 at 9:48 amI love Okoye, I think he falls between 18 and 20, maybe more.
But most likely Justin Harrell
April 20th, 2007 at 10:56 ammost likely will be on the board at 23.
the reason for drafting the DT is we are handing out one year deals to men who are on there last leggs and couldn’t get a better deal anywhere else this off season.
April 20th, 2007 at 11:10 amAnd as I like Leanard FB Rutgers, thought I would pass along, that *Cold Pizza* stated this morning
April 20th, 2007 at 11:17 am(when I heard it anyways)
the Chiefs are planning on Drafting a runner very early.
seeing that we have two good runners and a kid in Europe at the position , this may show they are leaning to him in the second round
King Carl is definitely up to something. I’m going to have to take a look inside Peterson’s head on here pretty soon.
April 20th, 2007 at 11:50 amThese are the running backs the Chiefs brought in to talk to: California’s Marshawn Lynch, Ohio State’s Antonio Pittman, Florida State’s Lorenzo Booker and Louisville’s Kolby Smith.
Wondering why they didn’t bring Leonard in?
April 20th, 2007 at 12:08 pmThats why Adam says he is up to something…
April 20th, 2007 at 12:24 pmBut it is a week away…and smoke screens fly now.
A few teams above us need Running backs, and D-line help….
He may just very well be getting them to switch options
And Lynch will probably be there for the Chiefs when we draft in the first round.
April 20th, 2007 at 12:26 pmI’ve seen teams bring in a ton of guys and draft someone they didn’t bring in at all.
And if we pick Lynch in the first round I will puke all over myself. With Bennett and Ross on the roster, running back isn’t THAT urgent of a need.
April 20th, 2007 at 12:33 pmtrue….
April 20th, 2007 at 12:37 pmWe need a trench guy ….o-line or d-line in the first round.
I agree totally redbeard. We need lineman. Thats how good teams do it in the first round (Patriots)
I think that someone released the “weed info” to hopefully land some of those three guys with a later pick too. Just sad that they have to expose those guys honesty.
April 20th, 2007 at 12:46 pmTrue
April 20th, 2007 at 2:25 pmLJ runs better thru the center and guard, so why not go with Ben Grubbs from Auburn? Hopefully KC will get an extra 2nd rd pick from Miami to nab him and spend the 23rd selection on Revis, Bowe, or Jarret.
April 20th, 2007 at 2:50 pmI wouldn’t get your hopes up, especially after Green stated that he doesn’t want to play for Cleveland. I think we’ll get a fourth, and probably only because the Phins don’t have a fifth.
I do like Grubbs, though. I mentioned him in my Sears podcast.
April 20th, 2007 at 3:18 pmThings change but I have seen Grubbs going anywhere from the lower half of the first to the bottom of the second…I still think they go for a DT first round, more than likely one will be there for us at 23.
April 20th, 2007 at 9:05 pmin the second they can go quite a few ways and still get a O-lineman or maybe even my player.
I think a DT will be there, likely Harrell. This Okoye weed thing could cause him to slip, with him and Branch possibly falling. That would likely allow Harrell to be there, unless he jumps one or both. I don’t really see that happening. The good thing is that all three guys now have question marks. Okoye — pot smoking (Not that I think him smoking once as a freshman is a big deal, but scouts could. Personally, I admire his honesty.); Branch — toughness/work ethic; and Harrell — durability.
