Mock Draft II
Here is our second take on the upcoming NFL Draft, and this time we’ve included the second round and podcast breakdowns of each of our Chiefs’ picks. Enjoy…
ROUND ONE
1.
(Adam) – WR Calvin Johnson, Georgia Tech
Never has a man been more smitten with the deep ball than Raiders owner Al Davis. He likes Russell, but it’s become obvious that he covets Johnson. He drafts the 6′5″ phenom banking on the thought that he can still bring in either Josh McCown or Daunte Culpepper to play QB.
2.
(Zach) – QB JaMarcus Russell, Louisiana State
The Lions have a ton of options here. They might try to trade down but with Johnson off the board they may have lost a trading partner in the Bucs. I think the Lions will stay put and take Russell — a QB whose arm is a great fit for offensive coordinator Mike Martz’s pass-happy offense. Lets just hope that GM Mat Millen doesn’t blow yet another first-round pick.
3.
(Adam) – RB Adrian Peterson, Oklahoma
If GM Phil Savage passes up Peterson he should get mauled by a savage bunch of Dog Pound members. Peterson is rising and for good reason. He is easily the best running back prospect to come along in years. The only concerns are his durability and tall running style. Still, his combination of speed, size and power is too dynamic to pass on here. Recently signed RB Jamal Lewis’ contract is only for one year, so that isn’t even an issue.
4.
(Zach) – OT Joe Thomas, Wisconsin
Not landing Calvin Johnson, who Jon Gruden definitely has a man-crush on, would be a nightmare for the Bucs. I look for them to try and trade out of this spot because they can get a player they like later in the first, plus an extra pick for their troubles.
5.
(Adam) – DT Amobi Okoye, Louisville
The soon-to-be youngest player in the NFL continues to climb. Okoye’s combination of intelligence, size and speed, paired with his nonstop motor, could allow him to go off the board far, far earlier than we thought merely weeks ago.
6.
(Zach) – DE Gaines Adams, Clemson
This is great news for the Redskins fans over at HailRedskins.com. Not only do they land the pass rusher their ‘Skins desperately need, it happens to be the best one in this draft class. Adams’ presence will be felt immediately as he harasses guys named Manning, McNabb and Romo all season long.
7.
(Adam) – QB Brady Quinn, Notre Dame
Tarvaris Jackson. Enough said. Vikes fans who question Quinn’s ability to win big games can’t possibly feel more comfortable with the ball in Jackson’s hands. Irish head coach Charlie Weiss has helped turn Quinn into a winner. I’m not saying Quinn is the next Tom Brady, but I wouldn’t at all be surprised to see Quinn develop into a Pro Bowl-caliber player.
8.
(Zach) – S LaRon Landry, Louisiana State
The Falcons secondary needs some serious help, and Landry will give the struggling unit an immediate boost. Landry possesses blazing speed and knocked more than a few players woozy (just ask Brodie Croyle) during his days as a Tiger. He has all the intangibles to become a perennial All-Pro safety.
9.
(Adam) – CB Leon Hall, Michigan
I just don’t like Levi Brown. I can’t see him becoming a dominate offensive lineman, and that’s exactly what teams expect when they pick one in the top 10. The secondary is possibly in worse shape than the O-line anyway. Hall, possibly the premier corner in this class, is a safe pick here for GM Randy Mueller and new head coach Cam Cameron.
10.
(Zach) – OT Levi Brown, Penn State
One reason David Carr is no longer around is because he got sacked more than any other QB in the league during his time with the Texans. They need to keep QB Matt Schaub on his feet if they want him to be successful. Although my brother isn’t a big fan of Brown, I think he’s nearly as good as Thomas. With the additions of both Brown and Schaub, not to mention Ahman Green, I wouldn’t be shocked if Andre Johnson led the league in several receiving categories next season.
11.
(Adam) – DE Adam Carriker, Nebraska
12.
(Zach) – ILB Patrick Willis, Mississippi
13.
(Adam) – CB Darrelle Revis, Pittsburgh

Again I know I’m stubborn…lol
FB Brian Leonard from Rutgers is on the board after we pick in the second….
with the Chiefs going away from a Wideout with the first pick, he is a valuable acquisition in this spot.
even if we get the dolphins second, second round pick he would have been available then as well…at least on this board.
April 18th, 2007 at 10:29 pmI did like Adams pod cast , well done and explanatory.
April 18th, 2007 at 11:13 pmI like Leonard too, but with Shields retiring and holes all over the offensive line we have to go with an OL in either the 1st or 2nd. Also with Casey Weigmann possibly retiring soon the front 5 needs to start getting replaced. If we acquire a 2nd round pick I still think WR or another OL is the way to go. But like I said I wouldn’t be disappointed with Leonard if we feel we can fill those needs later. I just dont want to see Brodie or Damon on their back all season.
April 18th, 2007 at 11:14 pmI would rather go tackle then as our guards and backups at the guard poss. are better than at tackle right now.
April 18th, 2007 at 11:28 pmThanks… I actually updated the podcasts. Felt a little rushed last night and I wanted to touch on Leonard in the Sears podcast, and did this time around.
One thing I would like to add about Harrell, can’t remember if I touched on it or not, is that he is healthy. That bicep is fully healed as evidenced by the 31 bench press repetitions of 225 lbs. that he did at the combine.
April 19th, 2007 at 8:30 amliked this podcast even better
April 19th, 2007 at 9:43 amThanks. They are a work in progress, especially the ones I am doing on my own. Been a long time since I’ve done any radio. But we are definitely dedicated to making the podcasts one of our best features.
April 19th, 2007 at 9:52 amThanks for the Harrell update. I figured he wasn’t 100% because of the nature of his injury.
April 19th, 2007 at 11:05 amYeah, I think that I’m actually going to do a second podcast specifically about his injury. I’ll have that up sometime today.
April 19th, 2007 at 11:19 amThere is no way that the Bears will take another wideout in the 1st round. I don’t care who it is. They already have 3 WRs they love and have been looking at the possibility of moving Hester to the offensive side of the ball situationally.
April 19th, 2007 at 2:05 pmWhile I understand your POV, I think the Bears need another WR. Berrian was pretty good last year, but Muhammad is getting old and Bradley is unreliable. As for Hester, I’ll believe that when I see it. I’m not saying he can’t, but we Chiefs fans once thought that Dante Hall’s return skills could work effectively on offense. And Champ Bailey was supposed to be a WR. Same with T-New.
The only way I see the Bears not picking a WR is if they pick a QB or can’t resolve the Briggs situation. Then the Bears will probably pick a linebacker.
April 19th, 2007 at 3:21 pmBradley is a very effective player when he’s not hurt. They’re mainly looking at using Hester for trick plays and fake trick plays. You put Hester on the field as a wideout or back and even if the ball doesn’t go to him he’ll draw a lot of attention.
April 19th, 2007 at 4:48 pmSure, but eventually they learn how to cover a player like that (i.e. Hall) and keep him from getting out in the open.
Who knows? Maybe Chicago won’t take a WR all draft long. If I were picking I would, though. That’s all I am saying.
April 19th, 2007 at 5:06 pmI’m not even saying they have to give Hester the ball half of the time. Just his presence will throw some defenses off.
April 19th, 2007 at 10:22 pmI can’t disagree with that.
April 19th, 2007 at 11:02 pmI see Chicago going a dull route that the Chiefs will also be taking this year…
in the trenches… My thought is they start adding youth to their O-line…first round and go for a receiver in the second
with the Chiefs drafting a DT first round
April 19th, 2007 at 11:23 pmI could see that. If Harrell is gone it would be crazy to draft a DT, though. Unless Okoye dropped because of the whole weed admission or Branch because of his weight/motor/toughness.
April 19th, 2007 at 11:57 pmSee the dancers pole has ears(inside joke)
April 20th, 2007 at 12:03 amDT first round.
Tiecher and Covitz from the star are both saying we’re going corner and that Ross will probably be the guy. From their latest blogs.
April 20th, 2007 at 12:16 amI just watched their videos…they have a point but,
April 20th, 2007 at 12:55 amBut I don’t think that will happen,
(taking a corner round one)…it doesn’t sound like Herman.
And Herman is as stubborn as I am, maybe worse.
I still think they go DT first round
Yah for some reason I think Herm and his ego think they could develop corners that were drafted in later rounds. Since Herm was a corner I hope he can develop good ones
April 20th, 2007 at 9:47 amYou just have to see what a difference he made with our two safeties last year to understand what he can do for a DBs’ understanding and outcome.
April 20th, 2007 at 11:07 amI see what he does in that corners are maybe the second deepest position in this years draft.
exactly!
