Every year the NFL releases its schedule on what has become a quasi-holiday for fans. Every year Chiefs fans walk away feeling screwed. At least I do. Not only do we always have a grueling schedule, but we are perennially an afterthought media-wise — we are barely ever mentioned by the pundits and are given few nationally televised games. This year is no different. The Chiefs were overlooked by Monday Night Football and aren’t even mentioned in “ESPN.com’s Top 40″ games. Unbelievable. You mean to tell me that those guys from Bristol didn’t rank Chiefs-Broncos in their top 40? What is this world coming to? Chiefs-Broncos is arguably the best rivalry in the NFL. Hey, at least maybe we’ll come into the season with a chip on our shoulder.
As for the TV schedule, especially MNF, I honestly think that the NFL takes advantage of the fact that Arrowhead will be filled to capacity no matter what. When I look at that schedule and see games such as Cardinals at 49ers, and teams like the Bills and Vikes, it makes me want to puke. The Broncos have three MNF games. Who beat who out to make the playoffs last season?
As for the schedule itself, as always it will be tough to win two games against San Diego and Denver, let alone three or four. Oakland will most definitely be improved with Gruden Part Deux at the helm. I still expect the Chiefs to beat the Raiders twice. I’m predicting 4-2 in the AFC West, same as last season.
I like how the Chiefs open and close. We drew the Texans first, which will be new QB Matt Schaub’s first game. Old Gun will send the house at him. We open at home with the Vikings. QB Tarvaris Jackson will likely be in for the longest day of his life. We’ll probably lose at Chicago and San Diego, the second and fourth games respectively. Jared Allen will likely miss those games, and that will hurt. I’m thinking we open the season with a 2-2 record.
As for the finish, I think the Chiefs could win out the last three — Tennessee, at Detroit and at New York Jets. It really depends if Tennessee and New York are still fighting for postseason births. I guess there is the possibility that Pacman Jones could be back for the Titans game. I highly doubt it, though. I’m going to play it safe and say we win two out of three of those games. I don’t think that the Jets will be a playoff contender, so we could get a break there.
The rest of the schedule is pretty tough. I think the Chiefs beat the Packers for sure, but the Bengals, Colts and Jags could all hand us losses. The pessimist in me says we’ll go 2-2 in those games.
I’m predicting another 10-6 season for the Chiefs. I could see us going 11-5 or 9-7 as well. Of course, all bets are off is Brodie Croyle is named the starting quarterback.
